Simple Fun in a Game Deserving of Far More

I remember my first time atop The Wall as if it were yesterday. An infinite horizon locked between a comforting deep blue sky and a drifting, impenetrable cloud line delicately hiding the endless struggles of the surface. Set to silence broken only by the rustle of the wind and the soft whir of electrical equipment, it was a new yet almost sympathetic serenity, not daring to say a word as you gazed upon an impossible skyline—a view somehow dotted with half a dozen unfathomable structures exactly like the one you find yourself aloft, each adorned with entire cities dwarfed by their hosts' incomprehensible enormity. Awe dissolved into wonder, which in turn expanded into a million questions. It was the midpoint of The Survivor's journey, and this quiet, crystallising moment was the only reward necessary.

I reminisce because The Watcher's campaign includes a similar moment, one that arguably eclipses any sight found in the base game; yet, it's a beauty matched only by the hollow emptiness of it. Once again, thick clouds roll gently below, alien structures poke through the mist, and I can't help but sit there for a moment, taking it all in. Only this time, all I see is metal in the distance. No further response is registered. No deeper thoughts emerge. Not just because it's riffing on a vista I've already beheld, but rather, I suspect it has something to do with the Watcher's shiny new way of getting around, a way that, while I won't spoil its nature, plops your slugcat right at their destination without much care for the journey.

Reaching Pebbles, by comparison, was an event built up over nearly a dozen hours, and it clarified a lot of things: the origin of the overseers observing your path, the titular death rain hitting every fifteen minutes, why Shaded Citadel was well... shaded—if you were willing to ask, it was a moment that responded, albeit with plenty more mysteries of its own, but the promise you'll find a resolution somewhere. It was the product of an interconnected world that gave a toss about its structure and cohesion, one that effortlessly flowed from one region to another, one that offered the satisfaction of mastering a locale and leaving it behind, and one that truly felt alive, breathing, and full of purpose.

The Watcher's campaign, following an exceptional opening few hours, instead almost immediately decides to go the way of groundless fan fiction, structuring itself as this wildly opaque scavenger hunt set in a hodgepodge of disjointed, random regions ultimately so cobbled together it feels like essentially what it is: a mod showcase. The Watcher's regions aren't connected physically, they don't interact in the slightest, and that complete lack of identity outside of themselves leaves even the bespoke areas feeling as isolated and out of place as the pre-existing modded content. There's no point scrutinising the details and worldbuilding of each region, not least because you know that plenty of the preceding fan extrapolations have been ham-fisted in, but also because there's pretty much none to speak of anyway.

Once again, I'm perched atop the highest spire of that new region—Rain World has never looked or sounded this good, but it's just a pretty coat of paint when there's so little of any significance on the inside.

https://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3455959876

Nevertheless, these new regions play really well, and generally, if you're looking at this expansion from the perspective of someone invested in Rain World primarily for its excellent gameplay, I've nowhere near as much to complain about. That said, however, it's not without fault: most of the new creatures are fantastic, but a good chunk of them are barely implemented, resulting in most regions still typically revolving around familiar encounters with the traditional lizards, vultures, and arthropods. Furthermore, The Watcher's signature mechanic not only feels a bit ridiculous, but it directly encourages stealth and, by extension, non-interactivity with many of the new faces.

Even now, having rolled credits on the campaign and toiled immensely to roll them again (if you know, you know), I struggle to understand exactly how I feel. The final ending offers enough food for thought to somewhat justify the journey, and I love the minute-to-minute of Rain World enough to say that I enjoyed the overall experience more than I didn't; however, it's just basic fun in the way that expedition mode is, and endorsing an expansion that so overwhelmingly departs from the brilliance of what came before almost exclusively for the worse is a different story altogether.

Rain World is more than just its gameplay, it's more than a muddled mass of incoherent pretty regions, and it's more than a delphic plot for the sake of having one—simply put, Rain World is my favourite game of all time, but if this is what we can expect its future to look like, I think I have to make peace with the fact I'm never getting that unforgettable moment atop The Wall again.
