It's a good game, and I don't regret spending some time playing it. However, it just didn't live up to the raw experience of Borderlands 1 (where the whole world was being experienced for the first time, and no other game can ever achieve that), nor the storytelling of the Borderlands 2. It was just... okay. It basically continued on the same formula of the previous games, but it's like a risk-free logical progression, and doesn't provide any unique experiences other than the core BL experience which alternates between shooting enemies and comparing gun loot.

One thing I liked very much is the "edge climbing" mechanics, where you can climb on any edge you jump to, which makes the movement so smooth and natural, and I noticeably missed it when playing other games.

Amazing game. Looks amazing, the story is good, the universe is very creative and magical, the environments are brilliant.

I managed to play it on Ultra settings with FSR2 on a laptop with Ryzen 7 8845HS and integrated Radeon 780M Graphics.

Fun little game, to learn some new terms around climate change and ecology.

Hardcore mode is really, really hardcore, overwhelming and unpleasant.

Great game concept, beautiful artwork, awesome soundtrack, great replayability and runs at 60 FPS on a toaster.

One of my favorite games.

FIrstly, I want to point out that this game is enjoyable on a PC with Linux and Intel (10th Gen) integrated graphics, I wouldn't have a chance to experience it if it wasn't as optimised. This was possible only due to 2K/Feral making Linux ports, so that it can run natively, and not through emulation/Wine/Proton.

What I really like about it is the atmosphere and the ambient. Battles take place over thematically-unique areas each time, each with their own visuals that feel more like real places than playing fields, which accentuates the feeling of going all over the world to fight aliens. I'm amazed by the way the game mechanics work — even though the playing field looks two-dimensional, it is soon revealed that line-of-sight, elevation and projectile trajectories make the player consider the whole aspect of the terrain. I LOVE how the terrain is destructible, and in ways that affect the gameplay (holes in the walls offer new paths of movement, for example), this feels really ahead of its time for this game. Units gain experience over time, and become irreplaceable part of the squad, but the threat of losing a unit due to bad positioning, or merely bad luck, is ever-present, so one tries really hard to find a way to get everyone to survive. Also, "random encounter" missions pop-up every so often, with unique objectives, which makes for some unique situations which make the gameplay diverse.

There are some small things that I dislike about the game: the whole base-building part of the game feels tedious at moments, because it always feels resource-constrained, like you're on your last dollars when buying weapons and facilities, and you have to wait until the next "paycheck" to make further purchases and upgrades. I'd much prefer a system where there is no base-building aspect, but you rather get facilities by progressing through the story, and get money from every mission you successfully complete. That, and the micromanagement of the gear between soldiers are some of the aspects that need quality-of-life improvements (that are hopefully present in the next games in the series). Thankfully, nothing major or game-breaking.

This game is gorgeous!

The graphics are imaginative, artsy and colorful, and make you stop to enjoy the moment of visual bliss. The soundtrack — well, I've listened to the soundtrack many times over before I even played the game, so it speaks for itself, I am grateful to Darren Korb and Ashley Barrett for some unique music from all of the four Supergiant Games titles, I often enjoy listening to them.

I believe that this game is visual novel at its core, and should be enjoyed as such — though, as I am not a big fan of such genre, I found myself often skipping the dialogue, so I could jump into the next Rite. What makes this game magical, is how your game choices affect the game, both in dialogue, and in music. I love how to music melds based on the context — for example, each character has their own theme which is a "sub-melody" of the base rhythm of the music. Also, your choices are reflected, as well, in the actual lyrics of the song that plays during the end credits — how amazing is that! That level of auditory responsiveness is what is unique to Supergiant Games, starting from the Bastion, where the Narrator narrates silly things you do. Also, akin to previous titles (Bastion and Transistor), there is also that melancholic theme of the world falling apart and being irregular and irrational because of it.

The Rites (the action sequences) have a really unique concept, which is easy to understand, but hard to master. I found myself leaning on too-easy-to-be-true tactics, like just dashing straightforward into the adversarial pyre, which worked fine at first, but at a certain point, it becomes ineffective, and I had to learn actual strategies looking at how the computer does it, which was the intriguing but frustrating part, but I had it coming, trying to "cheat" the game. The control mapping was, at times, mentally confusing, and I often mixed up the controls, which was very frustrating, and it took a long time to master discerning the controls themselves, even disregarding the tactics themselves.

Since the visual novel genre is new to me, characterization (of the characters) was tiresome at times, but I enjoyed getting to know them, which can be perceived in the emotional involvement it required to choose who shall ascend and who shall remain, especially nearing the end, (spoilers) when you have to make the decision of who shall forever remain in the Downside. .

Although the game has replayability aspects (albeit weaker than other Supergiant Games titles), the actual playtime for me was about three days of playing, or, as statistics show, about 13 hours — so it is more of an "experience", akin to reading a short novel over a weekend, more than a game that you'll return to for weeks or months.

Overall, I'm really glad I enjoyed this game and it's uniqueness, and I've expected nothing less from Supergiant.

If you liked The Binding of Isaac, buy this game.
If you liked Undermine, buy this game.
If you liked Wizard of Legend, buy this game.

Let me preface that I bought this game along with the Between Dimensions DLC, so I don't know how the game feels without it. My suggestions is that you should buy it together with the DLC, as is it more of a mechanic and content expansion, and not a isolated game mode.

The pixel-art style of this game is masterful. The animations are so fluid and beautiful (and dare to step out of their pixelated visuals), that I've never felt pixel art come to life as it did in this game. It feels so right. The gameplay is in part a roguelite dungeon crawler with a learning curve (thankfully not as steep a curve as Enter the Gungeon, I hated that), part store simulator. It is almost too addictive to enter the dungeons seeking ingredients for the next level of your gear.

There are mini-bosses and dungeon-bosses, however, I found their power levels to be noticeably unbalanced, where mini-bosses seem unforgiving and bosses underwhelming, so you may be frustrated while encountering those. The biggest gripe that I had with this game, which is minuscule and just goes to show how high-quality this game is, is that the controls are controller-first, and don't even support the mouse. There are so many menus, especially in the shop part, where proper keyboard & mouse support would fit so well.

Overall, I really enjoyed this game, and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

With the higher difficulty curve than The Binding of Isaac, Undermine or Wizard of Legend, the game makes me quit out of frustration, with little-to-none enjoyment. When you repeatedly die on the first level, it feels so exhausting, demoralizing and repetitive to start over with the starting gun and no perks... the guns feel like each of them has a flaw, which is a nice game design in theory, but in practice it just makes you look at the gun in terms of what impedance it implies, and not in terms of what empowerment it provides... if you haven't already played the games mentioned above, I would recommend playing them first over this game. Would appreciate the means of changing the game's difficulty, for example, similarly to what was done in Atomicrops.

First off, I'll mention that it works perfectly on Linux with Proton — the experience was so seamless, I never would've guessed it's not native.

This isn't a farming simulator in a conventional sense, as the agriculture portion of the game becomes less important on higher difficulties, and you're reducing it to a bare minimum (at least that's my play style) in favor of roaming and attacking enemy camps. So, don't expect this to be "Stardew Valley but with guns". Nonetheless, crop farming is the essential and central theme of the game.

The core genre of this game is a roguelite, similar to Rogue Legacy and Undermine in a sense that there is a meta-currency to spend to improve the skills of the character, and has that item collection system like in The Binding of Isaac and Undermine, which can, similarly as in those games, lead to some really wacky and fun combinations which makes you excited and curious about which of the items you'll encounter in the current run. You can choose the difficulty level before starting a run, so you can avoid being overwhelmed by difficulty, but you can also choose to always play on the hardest difficulty if that's your thing. The soundtrack is original and awesome, makes the feel of the game unique. It can get repetitive, as the runs are pretty much the same, except that the enemies move faster and have more health (etc.) on higher difficulties, however, it doesn't feel repetitive while you're mastering the game, discovering new areas that you couldn't before, trying out different guns and so much more.

Overall, I recommend this game, it's a really complete and cohesive experience.
