XCOM: Enemy Unknown is without question one of the best turn-based tactical games I have played. It blurs the genres of strategy games and tactical role playing games beautifully. I like to think of it as a modern, sci-fi counterpart to such turn based classics like Final Fantasy Tactics, Jagged Alliance, and even the earlier XCOM games.

What makes this game work for me is the feel, and polish, along with great combat design. Sure the actual story is kinda goofy, but the game never takes itself seriously, except when it comes down to combat. The turn-based system is good, the cover system is excellent, and the class diversification allows you to play a given mission your own way.

Permadeath is glorious in this game, as you become attached to your assaults, supports, heavies, snipers (and psionics). When one of them gets critically hit and killed, they are gone forever - at least there is an in game memorial for your fallen soldiers. The reasearch and technology upgrades are wonderful, and the worldwide panic increases will keep YOU in a constant state of panic.
