I'm just approaching 3,200 hours in this game as of the time of this review.

This game is still without a doubt my favorite multiplayer game. There is nothing else like it and that can scratch that itch like Hunt.

I've tried other extraction shooters and other FPS games and while there are some good ones out there, I keep coming back to Hunt.

Yes, the new update does have some problems. The UI is a mess but it's nothing that cannot be fixed with some tweaks. It took me all of a few hours to get use to the new layout and using a combination of the keyboard shortcuts and the mouse, I've gotten to the point where I can usually do my loadout and get into a match quicker than I could on the old UI.

Is it perfect? No, not by a long shot. Some of the UI improvements they proposed will certainly help but I do not think it is nearly as bad as some people seem to make it out to be. Crytek has a habit of making massive changes and then walking them back and this is no different. Sometimes they go 300% when they only need to go 100%.

As for everything else in the update, I can only say good things.

The new map is incredible and if the reworks of the first 3 maps are even close to the quality of Mammon's Gulch then we are in for a treat.

I love the new audio system with true speed of sound and echos. I've found it easier to pinpoint the location of sounds in compounds and haven't experienced the dreaded 180° sound bug yet, or if I did it wasn't as noticeable.

I've not found the addition of Bullet Drop as a major issue either. I never did a lot of sniping anyways and it seems that most of the changes are at the longer ranges, inside a compound you're probably not going to notice it all that much. I've yet to be Mosin Spitzer headshot by iron sights at 200m like in the prior version but I guess it's bound to happen eventually.

The engine update is also a welcome change. I know there are bugs and some people are having major issues but for myself, it's been pretty smooth sailing. I'm able to run it at 3440x1440p basically above 120 FPS at all times and it looks incredible. It's not maxed or anything, a mixture of High/Very High and with DLSS but it's night and day better looking than the old engine. There are some performance issues in certain compounds and with certain effects but those should get fixed in time.

I'd give this new update a solid 9/10.

The UI will get fixed/improved and all I just hope for is that the community didn't kill the games chances at a larger audience by acting like a bunch of idiots and review bombing the game for something that isn't all that bad in the first place and will improve. Then again, the Internet is full of morons so what do you expect?

I'm glad I went back and finished this game recently. I got it when it launched and it had some issues. I stopped playing but after the most recent patches and updates I decided to go back and finish it.

I really enjoyed my time with the game. I have some minor nitpicks with the story but nothing that overall detracted from the game.

I eagerly await the release of Forbidden West on PC, I just hope they don't make us wait 4 years for it.

I haven't done The Frozen Wilds DLC yet but I'll get around to that as well.

Early Access Review
One of the better Early Access Games I've played. The devs are very active with the community and always posting/updating on what is going on with development.

While not perfect this game has only been getting better and I think it has a good future ahead of it.

I mean, they can't screw it up as much as DICE and EA screwed up Battlefield V, can they?

NOV 2020 REVIEW UPDATE: They are still going strong, adding new content, fixing bugs. This game just keeps getting better. We are on the eve of Update 8 which is going to be a big one. I look forward to what comes next.

NOV 2021 REVIEW UPDATE: The game is still improving with every patch. I'm glad to see them continuing to add content to the game.

Early Access Review
I've been following the development of Space Engine for years. I've put many hours into the various free versions and eagerly awaited the long anticipated major update to 0.990.

One single event has made it well worth the $25 I paid for the Early Access version upon launch.

On June 18th 2019 you should have been able to see an almost Full Moon and Saturn (https://www.space.com/moon-saturn-conjunction-june-2019.html) but due to clouds where we live we could not see it. My Mom was really looking forward to it as she's always loved looking at the stars and the sky. She bought me my first telescope when I was a kid so we could look at them together. It was a real bummer that we would get to see the Conjunction due to the weather.

So I booted up SpaceEngine and was able to recreate a view that was as close as I could get to what we would have seen from the ground and then I was able to show her views that would be impossible to see from the ground, like zooming right into see the rings of Saturn up close or seeing the reverse, a view of the Moon from Saturn itself.

That alone was worth the $25.

UPDATE: They added VR support, seems to work pretty well. Need to test more.

TL:DR at the bottom

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Series is probably my favorite game series of all time. I've put thousands of hours into those games over the years. I ran S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Files (part of the former FilesNation/GameFront Files Network) which was the #1 place to get mods for the games. When S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 got canned and GSC Game World let everyone go I was really bummed out.

Vostok Games rose from the ashes and I jumped at the chance to support them and I hoped that they'd be able to capture some of the magic that the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games held in what they were doing next.

I decided that I'd support their efforts and backed them by getting a "Founders" status on their new project, Survarium. It was a $99 investment in what I hope would become an amazing game.

Survarium has sure had its ups and downs and I am not entirely happy with it but my main issue currently is with how they are handling the accounts on the game.

I have my original account with Founders status and my prior progress on it. I don't play it very often but I've been keeping track of the game for a while awaiting the "Freeplay" portion of the game. That's my bread and butter.

When the game came to STEAM I downloaded it right away but when I launched it, it just made a new account linked to my STEAM account that started from scratch. There was no option at all to log in with my existing account nor link my STEAM account to my existing account. This naturally annoyed me so I took it to their forums.

Several members told me that this wouldn't be an issue and I could just have support fix it. I contacted support and they were of no help at all, nothing got done. Still other players assured me that this was possible and that they'd had it done for them.

I even contacted their community manager Joe Willburn on Twitter and he looked into it. No luck there either.

Fast forward a couple months and I saw that they'd put up a Discord for Survarium players. Hopped on there and chatted for a bit and was once again told that it shouldn't be a problem getting an existing account linked to my STEAM account, once again this person had it done for them.

Opened a new support ticket, submitted my request. First got a response back in Russian that I had to use Google Translate to even read, basically told it's not possible. Argued back and forth with Support for a bit, basically telling them "Other players straight up told me this is possible and that they had it down for them." Support comes back and says that was something that use to exist but the feature was disabled one year ago and they don't have any plans to re-enable it.

I was basically told that there is no way at all for them to resolve my problem and if I want to play on my Founders Account I must play the game with their stand alone client. I don't find this acceptable.

There are dozens of other games on STEAM that use their own stand alone launchers/updates and do not have this problem. Most will just let you log into your game account via their launcher (which is launched via STEAM). Some will let you generate a STEAM Key (which is 100% to the devs by the way) that is linked to your game account and allow you to redeem it on STEAM (Elite: Dangerous does this). Some games will do the login from the game itself. Survarium does this last option but for reasons unknown to anyone but Vostok Games the STEAM version bypasses this for some asinine reason.

If you launch the game with the stand alone launcher you are greeted with a login page, just enter your email/password and you are good to go. If you launch the game via STEAM (which has the same launcher by the way) you are greeted with EXACT SAME LOGIN PAGE but there is no email/password box and there is just a button to login via STEAM.

The solution to this problem is so simple a Unity Asset Flipper could figure this out yet Vostok can't seem to.

I cannot recomment any player, especially anyone who started playing this game prior to it coming to STEAM to continue to support them when the cannot even manage user accounts with any sense of compentency.

TL:DR Impossible to use existing paid game account on STEAM, support refuses to fix issue. Cannot support developer anymore.

This is an updated review.

Hello Games has done a lot over the past 2 years to update this game to match what they originally wanted it to be. Is it perfect? No, but it's now actually worth the money it costs.

I started to enter all my financial info after the STEAM Summer Sale ended.

It was so depressing.

I can only afford an 8/10, maybe a 9/10 if I get a bonus on my paycheck.

This can be one of the most fun and most frustrating games you'll ever play. There is nothing else like it out there (save for maybe the original Planetside). Call of Duty? Battlefield 3? Medal of Honor? Mere ants compared to the size and scope of Planetside 2. While it still has it's problems, the game is constantly being upgraded, new features being added, gameplay being tweaked. Given enough time this has the chance to be the best shooter on PC. Period.

Plus, it's Free2Play (though it's well worth throwing some $$$ at)

If you want to join me in the fight, you'll fine me fighting for the Terran Republic on the Mattherson Server.

11/27/13 Review Update: The game recently went though a very large optimization patch (with more optimization on the way) so if you were one of those that tried the game but was unable to play it now is a great time to try it again.
