A good game to buy on sale.

I rather enjoyed feeling like I was playing a macabre version of Downton Abbey, conversing with well written characters, with decent voice acting. I like that your choices have consequences, and killing NPCs ripples through the community and has lasting effects. However I don't like how with most NPCs you meet you can't actually improve their ♥♥♥♥♥♥ lives, you just sort of address their issues and walk away, unresolved.

The combat is okay I guess, nothing to write home about, it served its purpose. Unless you want to go on a killing rampage get ready to utilise 40% of your moveset for the entire game, because you have to kill to get decent XP.

I think in the end I got sick of having to talk to every NPC and exhaust all the dialogue options in their skill trees, especially when I know I ultimately can't actually do anything to help these people, all I can do is drink their blood and make them sad. ESPECIALLY when by the end of the game the NPC personalities got a little strange and unbelievable, like they were running out of good characters.

If you like story rich games with interesting themes (and vampires (sorry I mean Ekons)), like I said, this is worth picking up on sale. It was interesting enough for me to commit almost 40 hours to complete, so that's saying something.

Someone made an entire game by themselves just to poke fun at another game. Now that's commitment to the joke. It helps that it's a decent game in its own right, and free too!

If you're after a flawless rouge-like experience, keep looking. However...
that being said, there is still lots good about Curse of the Dead Gods.

PROS
Rouge-like is one of my favourite game-types, and I've 100%ed a lot of the staples of the genre, so I can tell CotDG is a really earnest addition, and the devs put in a lot of effort.
Firstly, the graphics are beautiful; you explore this ancient Mayan temple, and lots of attention has been put into the look to the enemies, environments and weapons, all adhering to the "Mayan look", which is refreshing to see.
Secondly, the combat itself is pretty tight. There is a good amount of movement mechanics and techniques, with a high skill ceiling, meaning that if you practice and pay attention, you can clear a room like a badass.

CONS
Unfortunately, because I've played so many rouge-likes, I can also see how this game falls short in many ways. First and foremost, it doesn't feel rewarding to play. The core mechanic of a rouge-like is to run and re-run a course of rooms, and each time you die you get more powerful. The problem is that I don't feel like that's the case here.
You collect crystal skulls to give yourself 3 (total) minor buffs to help your run, or to increase your chances of randomly getting a better weapon at the beginning. You collect jade rings to purchase better weapons which again only appear randomly.
And collecting weapons is a bit strange because you only use 50% of what you carry, you either use your main+off-hand weapon combo, or your heavy weapon, there is very little point in swapping between them, especially since buffs favour one set or the other generally.
I never really felt like I had that titular "OP god run" that makes you feel ultra powerful, and makes you thirsty to keep playing. Most of the time in fact I felt underpowered and continuing the run felt like a loss. It was only until I realised that there is no point to using anything but a bow (heavy weapon). It's ranged, passes through enemies, and has good buff items that you can come across. In the run where I beat the game I used the bow 100% of the time and ignored my main+off-hand weapon.
Additionally, the enemies can feel a bit cheaty at times, like they get hits in that didn't feel fair, or teleporting around the arena. There is an incentive to kill a certain amount of each enemy without taking damage to unlock a coloured version of their bestiary picture, that is a bloody joke and it's no wonder it's at 0.2% on the global achievement list.

CONCLUSION
I know the negatives seem to outweigh the positives, but if you truly do like rouge-likes, I still think this game is worth your time. It's not terrible by any stretch of the imagination, and it held my interest enough to beat the final boss... just not enough to 100% it, which I usually do with every rouge-like I play. If you've already completed games like Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, Risk of Rain 2, Enter the Gungeon or Hades and are itching for more rougey goodness, I would say definitely hit this game up and give it a go, warts and all.

tl;dr
a solid 6/10

A unique and enjoyable game with very faithful vampire gameplay. This is a game about being a vampire and the pros and cons that come with that. If you can think of something you know about vampire lore, it's probably a mechanic in this game. In that aspect it's an amazing and lots of fun.

However this is also a game about grinding out materials to build your items, and as time goes by, the grind gets grinder and grinder, until, it grinds to a halt. I stopped at the point where everything required Dark Silver Ingots because collection no longer felt fun, it felt like a chore, and the game wasn't going to let me progress unless I did my chores, no so much fun.

Maybe if you have 3 other friends and you pool all your resources together it might be easier, but I'm a bit over it.

Fun and challenging at the start, but the endgame starts to become quite tedious once you've done everything. Endgame you're sorta just killing time meeting people's needs until the day is over and start again, so in that way it's a fairly realistic simulation of life.
It's worth playing however, maybe get it on sale though.

A fun and cute, but probably very niche LEGO game. If you like the two Incredible movies specifically, you are in major luck. If you like Pixar, you'll enjoy this game too. However if you are new to LEGO games, probably choose something with a broader appeal.

The lineup in particular is pretty bad, they had to fill the ranks with a lot of hit characters like "Banana Man" and "Hotdog Man", or Supers that literally only appeared in the background of one scene in the films, and there is only so many ways you can re-skin Mr. Incredible.

Yet this game obviously was made with a lot of love so it deserves props. If you are a LEGO game fan, I would say this one is worth your time, it doesn't even take very long to 100%.

100% achievement completion review

A fantastic rougelite well worth your time if you are remotely interested in the genre.
Come for the unique graphics, stay for the gameplay, tolerate the narrative.

Graphics

One of the most visually striking art styles I've seen in a long time. They have completely nailed the comic book motif, with 2D weapons and enemies, and 3D environments that have been painstakingly modelled to appear 2D as well. Any frame of the game looks like a panel from a graphic novel, it's nuts.

gameplay

The main gameplay loop is to enter derelict space vessels in search of loot. You need specific items to build contraptions to progress the story. Blocking your way are a slue of mutated enemies, security turrets and environmental hazards. Armed with upgradable weapons, explosives and gadgets, fight your way to find your treasure before the limited oxygen runs out and you choke to death. You will die in this game, but fear not, you are incredibly disposable. Every new playable character has a unique mugshot and set of perks, which either help or hinder you.
This gameplay loop does get fairly repetitive with only about 6 different ship "brands" and a few different layouts, but there is enough rng dice rolling of the modifiers to keep it interesting.

narrative

Probably the weakest element of the game imo. They are going for a satire on space bureaucracy and the harsh punishment of the lower class. But they lay it on so thick that I can't swallow it at all. There is voice acting and a proper plot so it's not devoid of substance, it's just a bit cheesy. It also has what I feel to be a very dissatisfying and gratifying ending, but it hardly matters in the grand scheme.

100% completion

I am a bit of a sadist so I went for the achievements that require you to beat the game with certain stipulations, such as not using weapons or not dying. They are quite difficult but they really make you appreciate the mechanics and structure of the game without forcing you to cheese too much. I think those optional challenges really make the gameplay shine.

So should you buy this game? Yes! But maybe on sale. I sure did, and I got my monies worth out of it for sure. If you like Binding of Isaac, Enter the Gungeon or Risk of Rain 2, you will also thoroughly enjoy this game!

It's alright. Pretty slow moving.
I think the writers are approaching the story from a very specific angle, and some of the themes you might find difficult to relate to, or perhaps you will. I personally found myself losing interest fairly quickly, but I saw it through to the end.
I don't want to slam the game too hard because it was made by quite a small team who seemed passionate.
Easy game to 100% at least, maybe just wait for it to go on sale.

Interesting setting / great graphics,
refreshingly original enemy designs,
and a story that was actually interesting with twists and turns.

Just a shame the gameplay was really stiff and awkward,
and the pacing of the story was bizarre.

Still think it's worth playing since it's a nice, genuine, one-and-done experience,
but there's definitely more quality horror games out there you can buy first.
