I found Bobo the cat to be a very refreshing take on the metroidvania genre and I like how the creator describes it as a Marioid as it completely sets the expectation of exploring a big world with a strong platforming emphasis and the game completely delivers on it.

It starts a little slow as your toolkit is limited in the beginning (you can't even jump) but I liked how it managed to make a space to experiment with the most basic mechanics (like moving, crouching, running ...) and showing you all you can do before getting one of the most basic ability in any platformer (jumping).
Each new ability you get opens new avenues to explore the world and the game is very good at putting them to use, each nook and cranny is filled with things to find and I found item hunting to be a very satisfying endeavor helping showcasing your abilities and how they tie together. On that point, I really liked how later upgrades didn't trivialise earlier puzzles which made item hunting in earlier zones much more engaging even when coming back way later and while I'm usually quite eager to follow a guide in most games for items, I took great pleasure here going for 100% without one.

Another thing I want to highlight is the jump : it feels weird at first with its slow startup and while it is very precise, it certainly asks some kind of mastery from the player to use it well but once you're well acquainted with it, it really makes playing as Bobo not feel like playing any generic platformer character but very much its very own thing and makes the act of playing the game that much more unique, I also felt later abilities expanded on that feeling and it all makes Bobo a memorable character to play.

Difficulty wise it felt just right for me, neither too easy or hard; that being said, it features some fairly precise platforming from the very beginning while you don't really have ton of health to make up for your mistakes, there are more save points to compensate and I personally like this part of the game but I can see how it can feel discouraging for a new player.

There are a few more high points covered in Sylvie's review in a better way than I could put it so I encourage you to read it too.

Bobo the cat is a free game with a lot of heart put into it that completely delivers on what it's set out to do and it knows how to surprise you ! If you're able to meet it on its terms, you're set out for a wonderful journey !
