Immersive Lore

Description
Description
Immersive Lore is a mod that breathes life into the post-apocalyptic world. Immerse yourself in the raw emotions and untold stories of survivors and victims who have left behind fragments of their existence. Scattered throughout the world, these weathered papers hold precious thoughts, heartfelt letters, and intimate reflections from the early days of the apocalypse.
NOTE: The vegetation in the preview images are from the 10 years later mod.

Q&A
  • How does this mod work?
    Immersive Lore introduces a new item, "Tattered Paper," to the game. These weathered remnants serve as vessels for the poignant thoughts and messages of those affected by the apocalypse. As you explore the world, you'll stumble upon these items, granting you the opportunity to delve into the intimate narratives they hold. Unfolding the stories within, you'll gain insight into the lives of survivors and victims, immersing yourself in their experiences during the apocalypse

  • Where can I find the item?
    This item can be discovered in a variety of locations scattered throughout the game world, such as offices, kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, and more. Each spawn location holds the potential for a unique story, ensuring that you encounter a diverse range of narratives as you explore.

  • How many stories are there?
    At the time this mod was last updated (5th of April, 2024), there are a total of 48 stories

  • Is it possible to come across the same story twice?
    Technically speaking, yes. The mod employs a prioritization system that aims to present you with new and unseen stories whenever possible. When selecting a story, the mod will initially choose one that you haven't encountered before. However, if by chance it selects a story you've already read, it will make another roll to find another one. This process can repeat for up to 50 rolls. After the 50th roll, if no new story is generated, the mod assumes that you've experienced all available stories and may present you with a story you've previously encountered. It's important to note that the stories are specifically tied to their designated spawn locations, ensuring that you'll only come across tales that are appropriate for the given setting.

Compatibility
  • Other Mods - No known incompatibilities with other mods currently.
  • Game Version - Tested and works on 41.78.16+. Not tested on earlier versions.
  • Multiplayer - Not tested in multiplayer.
  • Pre-existing saves - Can be added to your pre-existing save, although the item most likely won't show up in areas you've already looted.

Known Bugs/Issues
If the mod selects a story you've seen before, it will attempt a re-roll for a different one, with a maximum of 50 attempts. During this process, there may be a brief FPS issue lasting around two seconds. Other than that, no known issues exist at present.

It works in multiplayer as per the comments, but there's an issue where the story for the same tattered paper may not be synced across the players. I will see if I can fix that in a later update

@pwnd
You do have a point. There's no sandbox option for it currently, but I'll see about implementing one

awesome, looking forward to seeing how your mod develops over time.

small side note, i totally get people who submit stories want credit for it, but having the author names is in my opinion purpose defeating as it breaks the lore of the note. "Thomas's Love Letter" having the bottom sighted with "Author: Countdankula42081192" totally removes me from the immersion lol

im guessing there is a sandbox option i missed that hides the author names, but if not i think it would be cool to have that option.

Did anyone test this in multiplayer?

Thanks for reporting, will fix as soon as I can

@Krosis
Yes, it's possible. You'd have to change the story spawn points in the json file first, then change actual contents in the translate file

@pwnd
I've actually been contemplating the best way to render the stories. So far I was settled on having it utilize the UI of writing in a paper or a notepad since that seems to be the most suitable option. The others all pose problems that we have now, problems with long stories and multiline creation, which I currently have the code automatically create each 175 characters if I remember correctly. Your idea though looks good for immersion. Still have to decide on it

also, if it is possible to have an image file display on screen, it is possible i could make some images for these stories to be pulled up like a map and read from a piece of paper rather than a text box. having the stories viewed like maps could be useful for really long stories with smaller text, could zoom in to read it. could make each story super unique, lip prints on the side of a love letter, last words written in blood because no pen or pencil.just an idea. if not me, i bet somebody would make these images for you if you wanted to implement them and make this mod much more immersive.

Suggestion: spawn "illegible" "blood soaked" "faded" "burnt" and so on versions spawn alongside the regular story notes, and when you hit the point where the mod is going to give repeat stories, just spawn those "blank" ones instead. somewhat immersive way to ensure you never get a repeat.

@Arendameth

Any way to edit the texts, I would like to add it to use it in my server's lore.

I have something to report in MP: I personally love this kinda mod that adds lores and immersion so I put this in server anyway, and we did found a problem.

In mp, different players will get different stories from the same paper, and the name of the paper will remain unchanged to those who did not read it.

Not a big problem tho, just a bit out of immersion.
