Poker DLC. Won on, like, my second game? Blue deck, purely because I upgraded Pair and Two Pair. Whole 8 ante's, literally only used Pair and Two Pair. What a game.

It's pretty good, as far as an open world Sonic game goes. I've only played 4 hours of it so far, and the first 20 minutes were grueling (again, at first). I lost to Asura 3 times and then quit for that night, picked it back up tonight and learned a lot of the mechanics. I like the way the upgrades work and combat is pretty good (not that I play Sonic for its combat anyway). The longer I played, the less I cared about my original thoughts on the game as running around in an open environment while listening to songs from Sonic past has a certain enjoyment to it.
With the combat, it's pretty lackluster, but it's neat to play around with. The more you upgrade your (small) skill tree, the more attacks and abilities you obtain to make your combo longer and more visually appealing. I try to go head-first into every fight without giving the fights any thought, but in this game, going head-strong into a battle with one of the large enemies will cost you. Those fights aren't hard by any stretch of the imagination, but if you make a mistake with no defense upgrades, you'll lose 90% if not all of your rings in one hit (and that matters, because the hit-box on some of these enemies are odd (not awful, not good, some weird in-between). Now, again, I don't play Sonic for its combat (I don't think anyone does), and the running around/platforming is as Sonic as Sonic can be...
Sonic games have never been known for their tight knit mechanics and perfect flow states when it comes to hitting springs, running up walls, flying from rail to rail, the works... and this game is no exception. Even without upgrades for your speed, you'll often fly past a spring in a section, accidentally fly off a rail for a fight, it's the same old Sonic slop I've loved since I was a kid. Having the Jukebox to play the music from previous titles sells the gameplay for me, makes it worth it. The open world itself is odd to come to grips with at first, but it's honestly not the worst thing in the world as, again, having the jukebox more than makes up for the lack of substance in the open world (in my opinion). Now, I'm not saying I like how empty the world is just because I like Crush 40 and moving fast, I actually couldn't tell you how I feel about the world being lifeless... it just kinda 'is what it is' to me, I'm not upset about it, not gleeful over it.
The segments where you play a blip of old Sonic zones/acts are actually pretty good. I've only played through 4 of those segments so far, but coming fresh off the heels of Sonic X Shadow Gen. and Sonic Origins (+ Sonic Adventure & Sonic Adventure 2), flying through these segments is as much a blast as it's always been. Anyways, I guess that's about all I can say about the game so far. Oh, I also hate that boss fight music overrides the jukebox, pissed me off every time I was vibing to Sonic Heroes or Stardust Speedway and it just abruptly changed to whatever ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ost they made for these mini-bosses (Titan OST go hard asf).

I work retail. As soon as I got home, I played this for six hours straight. I don't understand what's wrong with me. Pretty fun game.

Perfect game to get you into (addicted) to Monster Hunter.

It's alright. Lotta technical issues for a Switch port though.
