Definitely one of the best ARPGs in recent memory. Now, I'm not gonna be *that* guy and talk about how this game is light years ahead of Diablo 3, but there are a few things that need to be addressed about this game when compared to Diablo 3.

First of all, this game is far more in-depth and complex than Diablo 3. From the item system, to the skill system (including their massive skill forest -- because let's be honest, calling it a skill "tree" would be nowhere near accurate), to the economy. Path of Exile just has so many layers of complexity that it's easy to see why people call it the true successor to Diablo 2.

However, that being said, please note that with this complexity comes a required level of commitment to the game. You are not going to experience anywhere close to all this game has to offer if you're a casual player. If you're someone that only jumps in once a week for a few hours at a time, you're not going to get to end game. Period. In this sense, Diablo 3 is better. Diablo 3 requires very little commitment to get to their "end game" and because it is so simplistic, it's very easy to pick up and doesn't require the hours of research into a viable build that PoE would.

Disclaimer: I suppose you could just watch a video or copy a build and jump into a season really quickly, but I've always enjoyed the "theorycrafting" aspect of a game like PoE (just as how I enjoyed it with D2).

One complaint I have about this game is how hard it can be to gear up in part 2 (act 6 onwards). Finding that right upgrade to an item with just the right combination of sockets can really be a chore. And if you play solo-self found, where you can't trade, or party with people, you can hit a brick wall pretty easily with a character that is not perfectly optimized. Also, I've never been a fan of the labyrinth (far too "rogue-like" for my tastes) and how something as mandatory as ascendancy classes are gated behind it.

Lastly, the game is free (like really free). The only microtransactions are for stash tabs or cosmetics i.e. things you can EASILY do without and do not affect gameplay in any way. Moreover, the game is constantly updated with new features introduced in every league (like a Diablo 3 season).

All that being said, if you're willing to put in the time and effort, and you're not prone to ragequitting, then PoE is definitely worth a try...especially if you enjoyed Diablo 2.
