It's a lovely chill game with some really enjoyable mechanics. It's primarily Pinball + Metroidvania with a fantastic art style to boot.

I've tossed and turns with regards to my feelings about this game.

The game itself is well made, I encountered no technical issues during my play-through and it overall was a pleasant experience. The fishing mechanics all worked well and the boat itself was fun to pilot around the various environments.

I think there are 3 main areas that disappointed me about this game

1: The eldritch horror elements were much less intrusive than I expected based on the media + hype. Don't go into this thinking that Horror is a big part of this game, it isn't, the madness mechanic is extremely easy to avoid altogether. But the mechanic also doesn't seem to actually do much.

2: Upgrades overall were not particularly interesting. Most of the upgrades in the game consisted of very linear progressions that didn't present the player with many meaningful choices as to what they should invest in. There are certain fishing mechanics that overall felt like they could be avoided if all you are wanting to do is finish the main story.

3: Upgrades largely rely on you randomly finding certain resources. Mechanics like these frustrate me in general as I do not feel like they are entirely rewarding. While it may be thought that "random drops" can be a fun player experience, for me personally, they just present a source of frustration as I attempt to find whatever it is I need to obtain the next upgrade and progress through the game.

Additionally there were a few quests that asked you to find a particular fish. However there is no way to actually locate which fish you would like to target, contributing to this issue of randomness that I have with the game. It really feels like a lot of the random elements of the game were primarily put in place to somewhat artificially extend the length of the overall experience. The game could have just as easily been half the length with the random elements toned back. I believe this would have made the overall package tighter and more cohesive.

With these being said, I do not believe that a non-recommendation is warranted. I did in general enjoy my time with the game, although as I got closer to the end I found myself focusing more on just finishing the game to move onto other things.

Overall, yes the game is worth a play, just make sure your expectations are tempered with the knowledge that most of the hype (as always) has somewhat warped what this game actually is. Dredge is a game where you fish in some weird places, meet some odd individuals, fish up some normal and not-so normal fish. While sometimes seeing things that make you ask if you're really seeing them at all.

The sort of experience that really sells the idea that video games can be truly considered as art

I really wanted to enjoy Starfield. But at present it has too many systems that are horribly underutilised. Too many loading screens and a lot of jank.

The quests all blur together as some sort of "go here, talk to this person, come back, etc" pattern.

When I am in my space ship, I don't feel like I am in my spaceship? As leaving a planet is a cutscene. Overall the space ship portion of the game could have been left out entirely as it feels somewhat pointless in this game about space ?!?!?!

Overall, I would rate the game a 6/10.

I have been playing video games for the past 20 years, since I was 5 years old. I have finished uncounted fantastic and enthralling stories populated within amazing worlds.

This is the greatest game that I have ever played, I mean that.
No other game I have played before or since has impacted me in the way that Outer Wilds has. This is a true work of art and I am glad to have been able to enjoy it.

Play it, you will not regret it.

Do not read up on anything in the game until you have finished it. The main point of the game is iterative discovery. Read up on the game and you will break it.

I also highly recommend the DLC, but purchase it after you have finished the main game. Maybe after you have waited a month or so and have been wondering how the hell a DLC could possibly fit into the game.

I do hope Mobius is able to come back and create another masterpiece in the future
