Good for the most part. Fun colors, nice environments, lots of funny bits.

On the other hand, none of the weapons are that fun to use.
Music is all incredibly bland synths with some percussion thrown in, it almost sounds royalty free.
No robots at all, which was pretty disappointing.

This was a game from a new studio so it's okay to cut them some slack, it's definitely an amazing feat for their first release, but I'm hoping one of them plays Ratchet & Clank at some point and takes notes for their next game.

Whoa boy, where to start.

Pros

• Novel combat and exploration mechanics which are entirely(?) physics based.
• Good artwork (textures, models, designs, etc).

Cons

• Insanely repetitive. The slog of exploring each level will wear down your spirit long before the enemies kill you. All the areas are incredibly samey and uninspired.

• Very little randomization. Enemies, chests, items, and placements will always be the same - the only thing that changes is the quality and condition of items. After nine years the devs still haven't implemented multilayered tables/lists, the most basic of basic things that RPG devs have been using since long before 2015.

• Repetitive combat. At first the gimmick of tricky physics combat is challenging, but it quickly gets old once you get the hang of it, because all the enemies follow the same basic behavior. There's so little healing in this game not just because it makes the game harder, but because underneath the surface the game is already too easy.

• Glacial rate of development. Like I said previously, this game lacks basic, common-sense features. E.g you can't even adjust the volume of sound fx and music separately. After nine years the game should have a bit more polish.

• Conflicting design features. This game uses darkness and torches to establish a lot of its atmosphere. The problem with this is that it keeps you from using shields, two-handed weapons, or dual wielding for half of the game, because you literally cannot see without a torch. There is a 'secret' solution to this, but general gameplay in an alleged RPG hinging on players all doing the exact same thing is terrible and short-sighted design.


At best, I'd recommend getting this on super sale.

I won't deny that a lot of work has gone into Exanima, but poor design choices and a lack of priorities on the part of the dev team severely undercut what could be an amazing game.

An excellent game for what it is. It went through development hell and this is the pale shadow of what it was meant to be, but even then it's still a fun and interesting game with a great atmosphere.

Post-apoc survival game developers would do well to take a page or two from I Am Alive.

Cons

• Subpar performance, mainly due to needlessly bloated assets and hot loading data. I wager this game wouldn't require an SSD if as much thought and care went into it as past Bethesda games.

• Poor writing. Characters are all samey, even the companions, who may as well all be the same person with slightly different moods. Sadly enough the robot with no personality is the most different and likeable. The story and setting are a snoozefest as well.

• Procedural generation is vastly overhyped - we're talking like, "planets from Spore" tier garbage. The various locations which can be spawned onto planets are all the same based on what type they are. Same enemies, same loot, same layout. Copy pasting isn't what players have in mind when they hear that a game as procedural generation.

• The visuals don't justify the terrible performance. I get far better FPS out of Cyberpunk 2077, which has vastly better environments and graphics.

• Combat is underwhelming, and feels worse than Fallout 4. No fist weapons, and no upgrades for melee weapons.

Pros

• Ship building is cool.

I would say the game is good, but nowhere near $100 after tax good. Should have been $60, tops. Starfield is going to need a lot of DLCs and modding before it's even considered replayable.

Wait for a sale and get this 50% off.

1. Basically a standalone DLC for Dishonored 2.
2. Worse than the other games in almost every way.
3. Fanfic-tier writing.

That said, it's still decent, just absolutely make sure you buy it on sale.

Alongside the first game, I'd say these are likely some of the best stealth games ever made. Highly recommend

• Very easy. Combat is 90% mashing x.
• Feels awkward and janky.
• Terrible writing.
• Stealth gameplay just isn't that good.

I got this at 75% off and I still regret it. Do yourself a favor and buy Odyssey or Dishonored instead.
