The devs plan to give this game a price tag of $3 to deal with "security concerns".

Containment Breach Multiplayer is a mod for, as you might've guessed, SCP: Containment Breach, the 2012 adventure horror game set in the SCP universe. Development for the game has pretty much ceased, leaving it up to modders such as Fusion Creators Studio to pick up where the game's original creators, Regalis, Undertow Games, and Third Subdivision Studio left off.

The mod started off pretty simple but wanted to go beyond a simple co-op mod for Containment Breach. They added a breach mode which is basically like GMod's old "Breach" gamemode, or more recently SCP: Secret Laboratory. I won't go into crazy detail, but if you're familiar with those games, it's basically that but even jankier, with rocket launchers, and some extra SCPs, most notably SCP-035, the Possessive Theater Mask.

But I never really got into Containment Breach Multiplayer's Breach mode. No, I invited some friends to play CB but co-op. It was confusing, janky, maybe even a buggy mess, but it was a fun mess. Containment Breach runs on the Blitz3d engine, which is basically a dinosaur at this point, so it may not be easy to look past all the bugs and see a fun game, but that's how I and a few of my friends see it.

I'd recommend playing Containment Breach before you play CBM, however, I highly recommend you download this game within the 7 days that this review was published in.

Why? Well the devs decided to change something. Starting around the 30th of August CBM will cost money. $2.99 to be exact in the American dollar. The reason for this change? "Security concerns". This includes hackers, cheaters, exploiters, et cetera. The bad apples that spoil the whole batch.

My problem with this is that those "security concerns" they speak of don't affect me when I play, cause all those concerns are for the breach game mode. You know, Secret Lab but jankier.

I only tried the breach mode around when I got bored with Secret Lab, and then I quickly lost interest. Of course it's obvious with this decision that there's still a niche group of people who do enjoy the breach mode, but neither I or my friends are part of that group.

"But this change won't affect you, or your friends, because so long as you have CBM in your library you won't have to buy it!"

One small detail you're overlooking 'Mr. Strawman with a Fusion Creators Studio logo on its face': What if I make new friends? Now that might be a foreign concept to some members of CBM's niche breach community, but I'm not always going to be rolling with the same bois 24/7. Maybe even a year down the line, or even a decade I'll meet someone with similar interests into the occult and sci-fi who's keen on playing the old but gold classic SCP: Containment Breach in co-op with me?

One small problem: it costs 3 dollars. You can call me a cheapskate, and I'll call the devs greedy, but 3 dollars is still 3 dollars. And this is not just any 3 dollars being spent on some 30 minute indie game, this is 3 dollars being spent on a game that is otherwise free to play, provided you have the internet connection to search "SCP: Containment Breach" on your browser of choice. The only difference is co-op, and I won't even count the breach mode, as me and this future friend have already likely played and enjoyed SCP: Secret Lab, despite all of its flaws.

So we've come to a fork in the path. A: the future friend coughs up those pesky 3 dollars and buys the thing so we can play it and get a memory access violation as soon as we try and join each other, or B: we search online for a free backup of SCP CBM or discover another modder's go at a Containment Breach but co-op mod.

Ok, tldr: Containment Breach runs on an engine that isn't even worth 3 dollars these days, and the devs for this mod want you to pay those 3 dollars so you can play their breach game mode hopefully free of "security concerns", when you actually only want the game so you can play Containment Breach's story mode in co-op, free of random players who may or may not be Russian hackers looking to bomb your router.

The part I hate most about this news is that the devs were already working on another multiplayer SCP game called SCP: Coalition, which they could have easily sold for money, assuming they remove SCP-173's model, which is based on Untitled 2004 by Izumi Kato and is not legally able to be sold.

I get it though. Indie devs, especially indie devs working on a mod for an age-old game, need money to feed themselves. But this is not how you go about it. Rest assured, we're keeping backups of Containment Breach multiplayer, and I'm sure Izumi Kato's lawyer will not be happy to hear another SCP game has hit the legal wall.

So get this game while you can, but unless the devs rollback their idea to sell this mod with a price tag, this review sits with a red thumbs-down.

In other Containment Breach mod news, a mod called Director's Cut came out which is pretty cool. It's basically a more dynamic and random version of Containment Breach. Does it still have ludicrous amounts of jank? Yes, but at least it's free fun.

Affordable, efficient, and it's on Steam. Maybe it's not the most professional software on there, but I like it.

With Cry of Fear there's no reason not to play this game other than you're scared of it. I can't count how many times the game startled me, better yet, unnerved me. My only issue with the game is why there isn't some kind of magical Resident Evil chest, where I can stuff all my loot and switch it out later. So many cool guns but I have to rely on the Glock most of the time. If it was a design choice, I wouldn't be surprised. Having to lose a cool gun because I needed single key sure does disempower me.

The streets and alleyways and apartment blocks and subways are portrayed really, really well in here. I may not live in Sweden yet I can tell this game was made by someone who lives there, breathes there, walks there. There's a lot of detail in the game, and with it, a lot of secrets and items.

In my first quarter of a playthrough I got stuck dozens of times and overall didn't enjoy the game much. Long story short, I actually just sucked and was either too scared or somehow too bored to continue. A month or so afterward I picked it up again and lo and behold I enjoyed it. I was frightened by it, sickened by it, and I loved it. The monsters that chase you and are battered on the head by you are grotesque, fast, and scary. In a game like Resident Evil you usually have time to get your bearings, aim, and shot. In Resident Evil 4, to speed up the gameplay, they had enemies run at you, then slow down and creep after you. In Cry of Fear they turned things up to eleven. Soon as they've spot you, heard you, they'll race after you immediately, never faltering or tiring.

By the end of my first full playthrough I got the best ending. This was a good and bad thing for me. It left a great taste in my mouth and I'd always remember it as the canon ending, but I'd miss out on these pages hidden throughout the game. The pages help you find secrets and items, and after getting the best ending I was completely unable to get them, so I have to use the wiki to unlock the rest of the items.

The music is akin to Silent Hill. It doesn't whisper to you, it screams, and the monstrous thing in front of you screams with it. Beats follow you as you run and pant. The atmosphere in this game is amazing. Some may say it just ripped off Silent Hill. I'll always believe it's a homage.

For your own amusement I recommend interacting with the dead cat you find. Keep interacting with it until you get a special text.

It's pretty fun when you know what you're doing and who you're dealing with. Look out for those pesky conspicuous people, don't go exiling a suspicious agent immediately, and never keep your eye off the cooperative guy. Could be setting you up for one stab in your back.

You can recruit a horse man, magical anime girl, knight, valkyrie, bootleg Link and probably some others I don't know of yet.

And you get to talk to a toilet genie.
