This game is underrated. I really enjoyed how the story was told,. and while the gameplay can feel repetitive at times, it still felt engaging and made sense within the context of the plot. Marcano stood out as a solid villain, and the supporting cast was equally memorable. What I loved most, though, was the atmosphere. The attention to detail in the city design is a signature strength of the Mafia series, and it truly shines here. Every street feels carefully crafted, and the dynamic soundtrack, which reacts to your gameplay, adds so much to the experience. Overall, it’s definitely worth trying in 2024—though I’d recommend waiting for a sale.

I really wanted to enjoy this game. After an incredible experience with the original Mafia—granted, I played the remake—I was excited to dive into the next entry in the series, especially considering how Mafia 1 ended. Unfortunately, I was sorely disappointed.

Let’s start with the gameplay. The combat felt clunky and frustrating. Every fight could be boiled down to a few counterattacks, making it repetitive and uninspired. The gunplay was similarly disappointing—imprecise and unforgiving. A single wrong move often meant instant death. While I appreciate a challenge in games, this felt less like a challenge and more like poor design, mainly because you can’t manually save. This lack of saving flexibility caused a lot of my frustration. For example, I once completed an entire chapter, only to crash because of the AI driving into me. I lost 30 minutes of progress and had to redo everything, including unskippable cutscenes, only to discover that all I needed to do was go home and sleep to finish the mission.

Speaking of AI, it was terrible. Enemies frequently got stuck in odd places, forcing me to hunt them down just to move forward. When the AI wasn’t broken, it was overwhelming, sending 15 enemies at once—enough to kill you with a couple of hits.

But fine, let’s say the gameplay isn’t the main draw. I didn’t play Mafia 1 for its innovative mechanics—I played it for its masterpiece of a story. Unfortunately, Mafia 2 failed me here too. The story was bland, predictable, and lifeless. The characters were forgettable, the missions were repetitive, and the plot felt like an afterthought.

The one small bright spot was the setting: a fictional 1950s New York. The atmosphere was decent, but the world felt underutilized. Aside from a few collectibles, the open world served mainly to pad the game’s runtime with constant driving between missions. And that’s really the entire loop: drive to point A, fight a few enemies, deal with predictable chaos, barely escape, drive home, sleep, and repeat.

Overall, Mafia 2 was a massive letdown. Where the original delivered a compelling narrative and memorable characters, this sequel fell flat, offering little more than frustration and wasted potential.
