This release took me back to June 2015 when ASE first release. My mates and I first woke up on the beach and almost immediately while trying to meet up, were met with repeated deaths by raptors and carnos. Just like ASE, ASA is unpolished, buggy, with features missing and crashes to desktop - and we love it, knowing the history and where it will end up. We are having so much fun again in this world of Ark with many of the new changes and even improvements. I am so excited for ASA to received that polish and features - but more so, I'm excited to rediscover Ark and the new things it has to offer. I have my favourite trike again, now I'm off to find my first flyer, just need 4 more levels and some chitin/keratin for that expensive pteranodon saddle.

It has been a very long time since an open ended, open world, survival, hunting, crafting, building and looting game has captured my attention this well and this long since Ark: Survival Evolved, 7 Days to Die and SCUM. So much polish for an Early Access game with so much more on the way as confirmed from the developers. I'm only 33 hours in as of the 5th of March 2023 and I cannot stop playing cooperative with my mates and even single player on my own.

So far with almost 90 hours in, I'm very surprised and happy with the current state of SCUM in terms of polish, mechanics, stability and graphics. It's such a joy to "live" in this world the devs have created. In no other game has an environment been so realistically and well presented even while just walking for miles. I get several vibes from this game that covers combat, tactics, survival and open world styles; ArmA 3, 7 Days to Die, DayZ, The Forest, and the original Ghost Recon (2001).

It's currently in Alpha 18 but I did purchase the game on the 1st of January 2014 during Alpha 5, just before Alpha 6 released. I tried the game in Alpha 5 and enjoyed what was developed up to that point and saw much potential. I left the game for several years but visited briefly from time to time until I think it was Alpha 16 where I started giving it my full attention and invited friends to play on a private server. We are still playing and enjoying it immensely. It's voxel based so everything is destructible, so mining is a big part of the game play. It's a survival game, so health, food, water and the elements play a huge factor. It's a hunting game, so you get to hunt wild life for food and resources. It's a crafting game, so you get to loot from the world as well as harvest and mine resources for manufacturing. It has a skills and perks tree system where you can specialise or generalise any which way you want. It's a building game, so you can create a dwelling, a fortress or a barracks to house yourself and mates but mostly to defend yourself from zombies and wild life. It's a tower defence game, so everything you do in the game is about preparing for the periodic blood moon day, where the hordes of zombies attack your position. It's got bicycles, motorcycles, 4x4s, and a gyrocopter. The maps are huge with every natural biome plus other surprise ones - There is a hand crafted main map plus the option for random generating maps. The game developers - The Fun Pimps, are the best, as they just keep hacking away at the game, year after year updating everything in the game. I love Ark: Survival Evolved with almost 4K hours in that game but this game is something else, even though I only have around 500 hours in 7 Days to Die, I foresee that number growing to a much larger number. There is nothing close to this game with all the elements it has in it. I haven't covered absolutely every details and some of the other interesting aspects of the game like stealth, crop farming, base designing, traders, POIs, etc. I recommend you buy it and enjoy it. Get the two for one deal and then gift it to a friend, as it is even cheaper than buying one copy.

No Man's Sky is Star Control 2 in 3D for 2016 - 8/10

Too Short; Not Clear

I see the core game play mechanic as being very close to that of Star Control 2. With SC2 you start off with next to nothing and not knowing much of what is going on (SC2 does have some background narrative in the intro but that's all). You find yourself in a star system approaching a space station and the game continues from there where you have to explore one planet after the other (Some safe and some hazardous) and discover new aliens races and installations on the surface of the planets. But more than anything the planets are for mining materials for constructing upgrades for your spaceship. And there are hundreds of star systems with their own unique planets. There is planet surface combat and space combat. And it is all in 2D. And it is all amazing. Then you have No Man's Sky as the same basic game but in 3D. It has also been amazing, not perfect, but for what it is, it’s very enjoyable.

I love NMS. You can almost technically say Sean Murray gave us exactly what he said from the very beginning and he kept reminding us of that fact and that was that NMS is basically like jumping into one of those classic scifi novel covers. It is strange, colourful, vast, mysterious, dangerous, intriguing, solitary and very vague and sparse most of the time. You end up moving forward to see what is next, to stay alive, to uncover some of the mystery no matter how seemingly ambiguous, also just to see the next alien planet and what strange and funny and beautiful things it has to reveal.

It seems people want to be stimulated every minute while being engaged in anything these days and if nothing is happening or if there is not enough over the top distractions happening regularly then it's boring and doesn't have enough content. For example I remember one of the common things people disliked about Half-Life 2 was the quieter moments where not much was happening. I loved those moments. NMS is open and vast. It is not one map condensed with near unlimited-every-second distraction for something to happen or for something to do. The galaxy exists and you find yourself existing in it and from there the rest is up to you. No hand holding, no forced narrative or fetch quests. you just move forward at your own pace in your own way to see what you want to see and go about things your way and the things you want to do. Trade, pirate, explore, join factions, learn the fauna and flora of planets if that's your thing, go cave spelunking, etc. It is not a perfect game, not even close, but there are very few games that deliver this sort of approach to openness, vastness and freedom. Spore was close, Star Control 2, the original Elite Plus, even Daggerfall with its own procedurally generated thousands of towns and cities. Those are the ones I know of and played and each one was very flawed but brilliant and still fun at the same time, and it's the same way I feel about NMS.

ARK: Survival Evolved

To my gaming friends, and even those who are remotely interested in gaming, there is one game that is busy revolutionising the way games are designed and presented, and also the way they are played.

I have played most of the classics and am looking passionately forward to the masterpieces on the horizon.

However my perspective has now changed since playing Ark: Survival Evolved. An online, multiplayer, open world, survival, dinosaur themed, RPG, resource management, action, PC game (also slated for Xbox One and PS4 next year).

This is the best gaming experience I have ever had. It is not a perfect game, even besides it being in pre-alpha development state and on Steam Early Access. It is clunky at times and the glitches and bugs are obviously present.

All that being said, this is the epitome of gaming, where it has evolved into the best of what can currently be achieved in this medium. It is the game, Far Cry, Oblivion/Skyrim, Ultima, Quest For Glory, World of Warcraft, Guildwars, Everquest, Minecraft, Halo and Unreal tried to be but didn’t.

So far I have had this game for roughly a week and a half and have played it for approximately ninety hours and have only scratched the surface of what it has to offer.
If you have a relatively decent gaming PC and internet connection, a couple friends and a little spare time, then you have the potential to experience something incredible that no other medium or peer can offer.

23 hours in and already my game of the year. It has some of everything in it. A walking simulator, driving simulator, jet skiing, flying choppers and planes, playing tennis, doing yoga, robbing a jewelry store, and that was just the beginning. I spent my first few hours just walking around from the ghetto to the industrial area to the city center to the Vine 'Hollywood' sign just to take pictures, while on the way being chased by a coyote and then me trying to get friendly with the one parks officer and accidentally bumping into her and then I found myself on the run again just to trying to dodge her bullets and stay alive. Then when I eventually got to the Vine sign I fell off the top of the sign, to my death, it was a perfect moment. Driving is a pleasure even with the keyboard and is actually thrilling and fun this time round even if not as realistic as GTAIV. The story is fresh but still reminiscent of classics as Die Hard, the A-Team, Scarface , Miami Vice, Goodfellas, Heat, etc. Get this game and play it the way you want and you will find many things for yourself within it.

As a person who never sets foot in the ocean ever due to fear of open water and the ocean in general, it seems quite a surprise even to me that I find this game so accessible. Don't get me wrong I am fascinated and love the allure and beauty of the underwater world but in reality I am happy to appreciate it from a very far distance. I have a dread for sharks and it is the reason I cannot play any similar water based games. However, as I mentioned this game's design and approach is genius with its method of introducing you to its world through the amazing aesthetic of the initial shallows without any threat whatsoever in the beginning parts of the game. The genius part for me are the more threatening aspects of the games where the approach is one where the creatures are designed in a more abstract style rather than mimicking real world forms so much, and this I feel helps, me at least, tolerate it with my inherent fear of real world ocean threats. That all being said, I love this game. Everything about it is rich in quality, and design mastery, all balanced so well with the game play mechanics, at least so far what is available. I have only played a few hours and still have quite a bit to do before I can get the Cyclops and explore the real depths of this world. I am looking forward to the progress of this game as it can only get better. But so far there is enough in the game for me to just enjoy swimming in this amazing ocean of beauty, I can’t get enough of it. It is probably the closest I will ever get to the real thing and I am grateful to the developers for that. Well done Unknown Worlds!
