If Resident Evil 4 was a peak gaming experience, Resident Evil 1 Remake had a peak horror atmosphere, then Resident Evil 2 Remake had to be the peak cinematic experience of a video game for me. Getting back to video games only very recently, I haven’t actually experienced many AAA video game titles beyond JRPGs and nintendo games. Man, we’ve come a long way because holy crap the realism makes it all the scarier, though honestly the least scariest out of the three Resident Evil games I’ve played so far. Resident Evil 2 Remake essentially took the best aspects of the original PS1 games of exploring while solving puzzles and fighting against zombies, and put that modern coating of a more engaging gameplay experience with the third person over the shoulder view and that crisp modern graphics. 9/10, I’d write more, but it really is just the modern perfected version of an already perfected formula.

I thought I came to know the horror genre in gaming with Resident Evil 4 and how its atmosphere and game design evoked a foreboding sense of tension, but I realize now that was only child’s play compared to Resident Evil 1’s true feeling of claustrophobic terror. This game was fun, but more than it was fun it was spooky. So spooky, that I couldn’t play for more than 2 hours per session without needing to take in between as I’d be exhausted from the tension created from its eerie sound design that is determined to get me in cold sweat with the percussions and screeches it utilizes in scaring me .

It is incredibly visually distinct. The use of a limited color palette is fantastic in portraying Spencer’s Mansion as this grand yet haunting area where you’ll never know what could be at the other end of the corridor. This game doesn’t have jumpscares but it really does feel like anything can pop up at any time. Considering this is a remake, I liked that they kept the door transitions despite not needing to as that added pause transition between rooms create this sense of dread as you enter a new room.

Narratively, Resident Evil 1 is a lot less goofier than what I expected after playing Resident Evil 4 as the urgency of finding a way out of the terrifying mansion is a lot more felt compared to strolling and taking your time in saving the president’s daughter. However, the choices some of these characters make truly baffle me as it all falls into the same cliches I’ve seen over and over in horror movies. “Let’s split up” and “you go on ahead” will be common in tilting me as I just find it so convoluted that they’d want to be on their own despite being in near death scenarios multiple times. The worst part is when a certain betrayal happens but the victim never ends up asking why and what’s happening. Otherwise, the story was still pretty gripping up to the end where they use a grenade launcher to kill the big bad. The characters aren’t really much to speak about since Jill is really just a stand-in for the player and I can’t say a lot about their personalities or character traits besides me finding Jill hot, but that's okay.

Do I like the gameplay? Yes, but only to a certain extent. The fixed camera angles don’t bother me as I thought it would as I quickly got used to them and learnt to appreciate how the chosen framing can actually help a lot in setting up the creepy atmosphere. Having scarce resources also added to the overall horror experience and considering how simple it is to aim at zombies and also being unnecessary a lot of the time, things were relatively easy. Despite that, it was still overall incredibly enjoyable in solving the puzzles while navigating through the corridors of the mansion and running away from zombies. I did have a major issue with the very start though with how little it guides you in some of the mechanics like combining and examining items you get, but that's just probably old games am I right?

Overall, Resident Evil (2002) was another great experience as part of my horror binge and is so far the most I have been scared of with a video game. Beyond some hiccups in the early parts, I thoroughly had a smooth playthrough of constantly getting exhausted from the tension and needing breaks every 2 hours or so. 8/10, the spooks are for real.

What an absolute experience I just had with this game. This being my first Resident Evil game, and also my first ever horror game in general, I had no idea what expectations to be had for getting into this. I am simply astonished. Who knew that video games can give such a brilliant cinematic yet interactive experience? Who knew that there could be such perfect harmony between narrative, presentation, and gameplay? Resident Evil 4 has completely changed the way I look at video games from now on. I will admit, I am not much of a gamer at all besides my investment in franchises I’m already deeply connected to so what and how I gush about this game might not seem that all that new or impressive to most people.

Firstly, I have to talk about its presentation. It perfectly captures this liveable yet spooky setting in the countryside of Spain and the locations like the village, castle and island are all so distinct from one another yet they blend so well as a cohesive visual identity to Resident Evil 4. Despite how dark the game gets due to its setting being at night at times, there is just clarity in everything I can do, see, and interact with. It is easily distinguishable from what's just background and what I can interact with yet somehow it never looks out of place in keeping my immersion with the game. Though the immersion doesn’t just end at the visuals because what strikes me even more is the chilling sound design. The creeping atmosphere with the haunting sound effects makes every walk through a corridor or road so daunting. What’s even scarier is when I know there’s enemies ahead with the whispers and weapon sounds making the inevitability of combat all the more tense. Every time I boot up this game I am just drenched in cold sweat with how engaged I am in playing as Leon with how real it makes me feel being in the world.

But I wish I knew more about this world. Being the 4th entry in the franchise, it definitely seems connected with the previous games with characters like Ada Wong and Krausser seeming to mention events from past games. It is okay though, the bottom line of Leon investigating and trying to recover Ashley is an intriguing enough hook with what seems to be some political struggle going on in the background which interests me enough to definitely check out the other games. These characters are fun to follow though, Leon has this cool no-nonsense behaviour that of an actual military personnel but can also goof off if the situation allows it. My kinda guy. I was incredibly worried that since the game is essentially one giant escort mission that Ashley was going to be super insufferable but turns out she is alright. Yea she cries out for Leon a lot when she’s captured, but she’s helpful in her own right and can banter well with Leon in the more light-hearted scenes. The villains in this game are so menacing, and the way in taking down each one of them is just so satisfying both narrative and in the gameplay with how much they’re built up only for eventually to be taken down.

And that leads to the gameplay. The glue that sticks all these stellar aspects together. The haunting atmosphere of the presentation really adds to the gameplay since it affects the player with how tense they can get from the sounds and what's on screen, not to mention the superb model layout and background of the presentation helps the gameplay a lot in distinguishing your actions and interactables as previously mentioned. Then there is also the story giving enough context clues of what to do next especially helped with the notes left by various people providing hints on what's up ahead. What really blows my mind though is how well Resident Evil 4 has so many gameplay mechanics I usually despise, yet it works so well here. Tank controls, limited inventory, scarce resources, damage sponge enemies are also stuff I hate in most games but it just works really well for this game as it serves the narrative so well. Tank controls make the game more tense since you can’t just run away quickly. Limited inventory and scarce resources further cranks up the tension of being stranded. It is just amazing to me how so many of Resident Evil 4’s design choices are just meticulously chosen to work well with each other.

Overall, this game is going to the all time favourites list. It completely hooked me and I just couldn’t stop playing it even until the late nights. So glad I’m committing to this Halloween theme of binging horror games that I have found a gem so many have praised but only now I am seeing. I will definitely be playing the extra content now especially since I want to see more of the one character I really liked being Ada Wong. 9.5/10, video games are great.

Really funny dialogue, if you're worried its going to be a "meta" visual novel, don't be. It plays it straight for the most part and just happens to have an anime artstyle despite just being set in an american highschool.

Really fun extension of the first Class of 09 game, Play the first one before you get into this one though.

the action is okayish, but the narration is really obnoxious compared to other "meta" games like stanley parable.

Very fun game, its a mix of 2D sonic speed platforming and classic megaman action with the power ups and boss battles. Definitely also just as hard as those older games too

Incredibly great game even if its not as good as Yakuza 0. Considering that its a remake, its obviously forced to stick to its original story that I just happen to find weak. Gameplay and combat is pretty good, although as an attempt to be more fleshed out than the previous one, it ended up being a tad convoluted in certain areas like the Dragon style. Otherwise, definitely still worth playing!

The second chapter gave such a satisfying conclusion, so its hard to muster the will to bother with The third and just skip to Zero. Nonetheless, I gave it a shot anyways. Complete opposite to FC, whereas FC was way too stiff and tried too hard to make you give a damn about the gameplay, The Third has the opposite problem where they really don't give a ♥♥♥♥ about the gameplay and moreso just an avenue of the epilogue storyline. Just like FC, be a persona fan with this one and just watch it on youtube.
