"Now if you take a look at the martial arts in this world, the only art which emphasis on hardening knuckles is Karate, and moreover the traditional forms like Enshin and Kyokushin at that. To understand the necessity of why Karate chose such a course of action, it is important to know why it was formed. Karate originated in the island of Okinawa, now a part of Japan, which was invaded by said country at that time. Most of the local peasants had had enough of the samurai’s harassment. It was then, that traders who went to China and picked up Kung Fu there, decided to teach it to the distraught people as a form of self defence. It was originally called Tote ( 唐手) or Chinese Hand before being named to Karate (空手) or Empty hand. The emphasis was on empty hand techniques against armed and armoured samurai as the Okinawans were prohibited from carrying weapons. Now, if you notice the samurai armour, you'll see that it's made out of Bamboo. Hence, Karate practitioners took to hardening their knuckles so they they are able to punch bamboo armour, if not penetrate it, in order to cause damage to the enemy without breaking their own hands. It did not exactly make their punches any more effective than they already were. It just added defense to their knuckles. When you punch something hard multiple times, the bones in your knuckles start breaking into tiny little fragments. According to Wolf's Law, when a bone suffers such microscopic fractures, it develops a stronger layer on itself to heal the bone, and makes it more dense to prevent it from getting destroyed as easily. It's similar to what Muay Thai fighters do with their shins. They kick banana trees and sandbags to harden their shins so that they can take much more impact before breaking. Hardening your knuckles will not give you more penetrative power in your punches. It'll just increase the amount of punishment your knuckles can take. Hardening knuckles is not about doing more damage, but about being able to absorb more punishment."
