edit: great game now also met a few devs on the sequel so i felt obligated to update this cuz they were nice

nothing else is like this game and that makes me very sad because i loved it and immediately was left depressed upon finishing it. the closest I can think of is the expansion for prey (also by arkane<3) called mooncrash, which i have unfortunately also played to death. every time I hop back in i find some new mystery upon the island i hope there is a dlc or sequel in the pipeline for the near or far future because I would happily return to blackreef (presumably?)

long story short i love this game like a lot. everything about it pretty much.

i will fill this in more later but please buy if you genuinely like these characters/marvel's cosmic side, you will enjoy it off the strength of the writing and level design alone i promise. this game went way too under the radar already and will be sadly missed by many who would have loved it. yall need to stop acting like youre too good to play a superhero video game, because its great schlocky fun just like the mcu is except the writing is more natural. oh yeah and raytracing is cool and makes any game look better if you can run it, still looks fantastic without it too.

play the game if u like shooting things and thinking more than youd expect to while doing so

Let me preface this by saying those looking for "more Meat Boy" aren't going to find it here. This is a game which takes many queues from McMillen's previous titles, but turns them into it's own beast. A story containing elements from Time ♥♥♥♥, gameplay similar (BUT NOT IDENTICAL) to SMB, and kickass music inspired by classical pieces. I liked all the parts here, and was excited for the game prerelease.

So then, why have I only played it recently, and only about halfway? To put it simply: other games. I really hate to say it, but TEIN is a relic of game design past, the platforming is not as precise as, say, Celeste. The story is almost non-existent, or at the very least intentionally vague in traditional McMillen fashion: lacking a satisfying payoff for the sometimes insane levels of difficulty pushed through. As expected from a McMillen game however: the art direction is top notch, with every level/chapter having a very distinct mood.

Celeste comparisons are rife due to the release windows only being 6 months apart, but I think they're fair comparisons to make. Celeste is a masterclass in platforming, music, art design, story even! Most anybody who's played Celeste (if you somehow haven't do it now) will agree with me about these points. As a near-lifelong fan of McMillen games, it pains me to say Celeste is just a better game.

So, why is this review positive? It must seem like I dislike this game so far based off of everything I've said but I truly don't. It's more than a little rough around the edges, and certain mechanics could've used more thought to flesh out. A great example of this is the interconnected world design, TEIN is laid out like one big level with sprawling screens in every direction, something which visually is pulled off flawlessly with smooth transitions. I don't hate this idea, but in practice it generally ends up just being annoying. Having to run through an entire chapter simply to grab a tumor in the last screen is incredibly annoying, this can usually be solved by going to the next chapter and clearing levels backwards, which sadly isn't always possible.

Despite all these shortcomings, this is a game which is very easy to lose hours in. Booting it up I would often find myself facing down a clock upon realizing just how long I had been playing. I enjoyed my time with this game, but feel no desire to replay it, and don't believe it will be remembered in the same vein as McMillen's other games. It's also really f***ing hard, something I try not to let influence my review or opinion, but it has to be said somewhere just so the reader is aware.

TL;DR: Very hard game, feels slightly unpolished compared to McMillen's other work, but is a fun time nonetheless and very much worth your money in terms of content present. Just be ready for minor annoyances here and there.
