Pretty good, bröther.

It's got all the charm and depth of world building that rivals the best of 90s CRPGs (i.e Planescape, Fallout 1 & 2, etc.), with a decidedly different direction in moment-to-moment gameplay. Disco Elysium plays to its strengths, like the witty and sardonic writing undergirding the core component of gameplay: conversation. Unlike its 90s predecessors, DE lacks combat in a traditional sense. Your intuition as a police officer plus a shattered psyche that lends itself to improvisation (e.g, becoming a communist, fascist, advanced race theorist, or a hobo are all thoughts that you can internalize and use as talking points) which benefits conversations in a gamified way. Your performance in the game is based more around your ability to remember and follow the investigative trail of a mysterious lynching in a neighborhood hostile towards cops. At its heart, Disco Elysium is more of an existential nightmare and self-discovery in a world more shattered than your character's own personality.

I recommend avoiding spoilers or walkthroughs for a first playthrough, it has a proper mystery that dovetails well with its overarching themes, such as alienation and existentialism. The game reflects most choices in a meaningful (and not always satisfying, which is refreshing) way, so feel free to experiment.

Pros
+Better writing, Wastelanders brought some interesting dialogue checks, pretty good humor, and has a more realized setting. Conflicts between striking laborers and factory owners are an example of some of the interesting stuff that sets it apart from the other Bethesda Fallout games.
+Cool monsters, the cryptids are a neat addition, even if the AI is reused, it's more flavoring for the setting.
+Gunplay is retained from Fallout 4, one of the better things from that game.
+There's some visual distinction between different areas across the entire map.
+The entire map is huge and caps are a decent (although not perfect) incentive to avoid fast travel and just walk around to explore the map.
+I'm a sucker for the survival mechanics in the more recent Fallout games so I like their return in this.

Cons
-After a full year of updates, the game is still barely functioning at best, downright frustrating at worse. I've had quests break while trying to make shared progress in teams. I've had C.A.M.P pieces not seem to work or snap together unless I do some obtuse configuration that allows me to place them. The party system is finicky and crumbles if something isn't exactly ideal of a circumstance. Important quest givers refuse to give any further dialogue options. I've had to swap worlds mid quest progression because the instance was locked to another person in my team. These are max Bethesda bugs and they seem to stem from the online-oriented focus towards the game.
-The limited mod support makes it hard to recommend to most PC players that are accustomed to massive mod lists or even more humble sized mods. There's some but they feel like needed functionalities that should've been in the game (like chat function or god, the UI)
-The UI, it's one of the worst of its kind I've seen in these games. You get a massive stack of items for the passive repairs you'll need to make on equipment and on making your C.A.M.P. Easily sorting this in the Pip-Boy UI is a dreadful nightmare and I loathe having to look for a specific item for a quest or for use from my stash. Even for a console friendly UI, this is egregious.

Summary:
It's a different take on Fallout that feels appropriate and well executed in its world building and quest writing, something that's been sorely lacking in Fallout 4 and Fallout 3 to a lesser extent. Being able to play with friends in a Bethesda game really makes Fallout 76 stand out and the backlash against it almost seems disproportionate. However, the technical issues and questionable design choices rear their head and I can see why people absolutely trashed this game. I like it, and I'm going to keep playing it. For people that want to be able to patch out these issues (a la any other Bethesda game), you'll be disappointed. The level of bugs, even after a year of updates, are hard to excuse unless you're used to jank, and I've played enough STALKER to be okay with a lot of rough edges. So it's a tough recommendation unless you really enjoy the vanilla Bethesda experience and can look/work past an above average amount of Bethesda incompetence.

What Space Hulk should have been, highly recommend for any fan of classic turn based strategy games like XCOM or Jagged Alliance.

Mechincally this game is really pretty good. The frontlines mode is different, reminds me of TC from Red Orchestra, really good though. The gunplay is similar to early an early Call of Duty. The map design is pretty decent and fits in well with the Western Front theme. At the time of writing, it is really rough around the edges so I would only recommend if you are interested in supporting it from now till release.
