The Greatest Piece of Media I've Ever Experienced

For a long time, I’ve seen many people praising The Witcher 3 as the best game ever. Then, at one point, I got the opportunity to jump in and see it for myself, and boy, how right they were.

This is the game that reignited my interest in exploring every single piece of content it has to offer after almost seven years of losing my spirit for playing single-player games. I held off on writing this review early, waiting until I had completed 100% of everything in this game so I could provide a complete review of my experience playing The Witcher 3. Here is my brief review of every aspect I could think of.

Main Quest

I don’t think it’s really necessary to explain the synopsis of this game, as it’s already widely known. The main story of The Witcher 3 truly taught me about consequences. The subtle choices you make in this game don’t always show their effects immediately. Sometimes, you are punished for a bad choice much later in the story, and you have to live with it because sometimes you don’t have a save file from before the decision. The same goes for good deeds or choices. For example, if you try to romance both Triss and Yen, you end up with neither.

One of the most interesting quests in the main story is “Through Time and Space.” It surprised me to see Geralt traveling through a few different worlds, which look vastly different from the one we explore in the main game.

Side Quests

For me, this is the first game where the side quests consistently piqued my interest. They’re not just “go here, kill this, and gather that.” Almost every side quest, including Contracts, has its own charm. Sometimes a normal Witcher Contract has a twist if Geralt decides to investigate further, which is not something every open-world RPG achieves.

Combat

From the start, I chose to play on Death March! difficulty so I could get all the achievements in a single run. Initially, combat felt like hell. I found myself saving my game every time I was about to start a fight, especially in situations where I was outnumbered, because most of the time I would die in two or three hits. Despite that, I think Death March is how this game is meant to be played. It forces you to pay attention to the many combat mechanics, like how to approach certain monsters, which oils are effective against them, and which signs or bombs to use. It makes you feel like a true Witcher who always prepares both physically and mentally before facing monsters.

Near the endgame, though, with a proper build, I could one-hit most monsters using Rend while being an absolute tank (Bear School Set is goated, fr). The combat mechanics themselves are okay to me, fairly simple and not too complex, which suits me overall.

Exploration

The world of The Witcher 3 is probably one of the best I’ve ever explored. From the hostile area of Velen, to Oxenfurt and Novigrad with their own stories, to the verticality of Skellige, and the unmatched beauty of Toussaint, the world in this game feels so alive. It’s the type of world where everything will just continue as it is with or without Geralt's presence, perfectly fitting the quote, “If you don’t, somebody will.” Velen is filled with various beasts and monsters; humans and non-humans live among each other in Novigrad and Oxenfurt; and Skellige faithfully presents Vikings in a fantasy world, and Toussaint with a pleasant mix of French and Italian culture.

My favorite region has to be Toussaint. It’s an outstandingly beautiful country in this game, and seeing the Beauclair Palace from a distance always mesmerized me. The city itself, Beauclair, seems to have already reached the Renaissance Era by 1275 (I think).

Music

The soundtrack in The Witcher 3 is probably one of the best. It enhances an already good experience to the next level. If I got bored with quests and contracts, sometimes I would just hop on Roach, let her go in any direction she wanted, while I enjoyed the music and the gorgeous views of Toussaint—until some random monsters appeared and the battle music started.

DLC

Blood and Wine is probably the best DLC I’ve ever played. It’s not just an extra quest; it also comes with an entire region of its own, the most beautiful and colorful one, Toussaint. Three years after the main game’s events, Geralt receives an invitation from the Duchess of Toussaint to unravel the mystery of The Beast of Beauclair.
B&W offers a significant upgrade to both Witcher gear and Geralt himself, and it’s the best content this game has to offer while also ramping up the monster difficulty to maintain the challenge. It also ultimately concludes Geralt’s long journey, allowing him to live a humble life ever after.

Hearts of Stone is also a great DLC, also one of the scariest, in my opinion. It revolves around the story of a pact with the devil.
HoS offers a nice addition to gear stats, mostly enhancing existing skills, and it also shows that Geralt isn’t some invincible one-man army who can slay anything. There are things even Geralt can’t fight or comprehend. Overall, a great DLC.

Conclusion

The Witcher 3 is a magnum opus, a masterpiece beautifully crafted by CDPR. Even after almost ten years, no open-world RPG has reached the heights that The Witcher 3 has.

If I had to sum up my review with a score, here are the numbers:
- Story: 10/10
- Exploration: 10/10
- Combat: 9/10
- Music: 10/10
- DLC: 10/10

Like what people said, getting this game at a sale price feels like robbing CDPR.

“After all that toil, I believe we deserve a bit of a rest.”
