Off To A Good Start

I have been enjoying Enis Kirazoğlu's content for over 6 years now. Enis is the head of Pew Pew Games, the developer of this game. At the same time, he's a highly famous YouTuber. I have always liked his personality, that was the main reason I have been watching ever since. Let alone his character, he is a gamer who has experienced 100s of games and critiqued them many times. So since he announced that he was developing his first game alongside a team, I kept looking forward to it to this day.

So did Enis, Furkan Kirazoğlu and their team work wonders? Is Anomaly Agent a great game? The answer is unfortunately no. But it's certainly an impressive debut indie game. It has nice visuals with cool pixel art. I liked that there were way more bosses and mini-bosses than I expected from a game this sized. The animations look good and the controls feel okay. I especially like the parry mechanic, a fun addition to the game. It has some ideas on the level design, but they feel basic. There are cool easter eggs. They tried to diversify the levels in terms of background design making most levels look distinct from each other. But there is no wow factor to the art, like in games like Owl Boy, Blasphemous, or Dead Cells.

Speaking of pixel art games, Anomaly Agent is heavily inspired by Katana Zero, which is not a bad thing. Every single game takes inspiration from others. The game's design, the level design, the storytelling, the visuals, the dialogue boxes, the dialogue themselves, and even the text fonts are very reminiscent of Katana Zero. But their gameplay and storytelling differ from each other. Differently from Katana Zero, Anomaly Agent is an action-adventure brawler. It's a game where you mainly use melee combat to defeat enemies and you rarely use the guns because of the ammo restrictions. Ironically, almost %90 of the skill tree consists of gun upgrades, so purchasing upgrades is kinda useless. Thus I have never felt the "I am getting stronger" at any point of the game.

https://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3146602908

I think the main issue of Anomaly Agent is something else though. It is its tempo and pacing. You are frequently interrupted by the dialogue and the cutscenes. And the dialogues are not few. I know the developers wanted the player to interact with the story but seriously, I think this decision has done more harm to the experience than good. The game never lets the player smoothly enjoy the gameplay. This shocked me cause I have heard many times Enis complaining about indie games telling needlessly much "story". The dialogue is not bad, they tried their best to deliver a fun narrative. But the writing and the storytelling are not that good. Celeste is a good example of what I am trying to explain here. Amazing gameplay combined with minimal storytelling yet had memorable characters and an impactful story.

Another issue of Anomaly Agent is enemy placement in its level design. The enemies are often placed very tightly or misplaced, causing a chaos-like gameplay sequence, where the player has to spam roll to dodge countless attacks coming at them. These encounters usually result in unfair damage to the player's health bar and, more importantly, the flow of the gameplay. This reminds me of The Callisto Protocol or Lords of the Fallen (2023). Another game that Enis specifically criticized for this very reason, strangely. Special abilities are another problem. Because you are immobilized when using them, you take damage. There had to be a short invincibility window to prevent cheap deaths. I liked some tracks in the soundtrack like the main theme, but nothing much else. The music could have been better.

Regardless of my criticisms, I think Anomaly Agent is a quality game, especially for the first game of an indie studio! I shared my criticisms because I saw no one mention these problems when I checked. Also, this is how I review games. "Brutally honest".

I recommend Anomaly Agent, give it a chance on a sale, at least. Anomaly Agent is definitely a way up in the Turkish game development sector.

A Timeless Revolution

It's my first time playing this classic. I have been waiting for years for these games to come to PC and the time has finally come. Let's state the obvious first; the ports are awful, all three of them. Konami spent little to no effort on bringing these games to Steam. You can emulate these games while playing them on such a better quality overall.

What can I say more about a classic that has been praised for over 25 years? Let me keep this one short, since there isn't much to say. Its ability to surprise me throughout the journey is what I liked most about Metal Gear Solid. It's no wonder they call this game a revolution in video games. Its story didn't emotionally connect with me, but I enjoyed every aspect of it.

https://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3123509261

Because the AI is better than almost all of today's games, it's a challenging game even to this day. I have struggled in many missions and boss fights. The boss fights are phenomenal, there are encounters in this game that I will never forget such as Hind D, Psycho Mantis, Cyborg Ninja, and Liquid Snake. The game is full of memorable moments and that's one of the things I care the a lot in a video game. There are little details everywhere that blew my mind to this day. I will keep it short since I won't be able to add anything new to the conversation about how good Metal Gear Solid is. However, I will mention that I was shocked to see the final scene because it was very similar to Resident Evil 4's ending. Seems like RE4's ending was a homage to this masterpiece. To conclude, I am glad I experienced Hideo Kojima's genius mind once again. We are lucky to have him.

Next-Gen Multiplayer FPS

This was what I had been thinking all my time playing The Finals. While it feels so different from other online FPS games on the market, it achieves being actual fun at the same time. It's just like how Apex Legends re-invented the Battle Royale genre back in 2019. I don't remember having so much fun with an online shooter since Apex. So after almost 5 years, The Finals has been such a refreshing experience for me.

https://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3112373064

My favorite thing about The Finals is the endless possibilities of how a match could unfold. Every situation can be tackled in an infinite number of ways using strategies and playstyles because the developers have designed every aspect of the game so well. There are crazy hidden mechanics, and the movement is very fluid. The game feel is amazing. Various traversal options for every character add to the feel as well.

My only complaint about the game is that even though the overall game feel is great, the gun responsiveness of enemies is a bit weak. You don't feel much that you are shooting at a human. Some visual and sound effects on that would improve this. Graphically, it is the best online FPS game I have ever seen after Battlefront II. 6 years later no online multiplayer game has ever topped that graphic insanity. Yet the game has great optimization considering the game has limitless real-time explosions and I would say the servers are pretty good. The multiplayer aspect also works very well. Strategizing with your friends various options with different classes and equipment is a whole other level of fun. Maps are very well designed giving players many options to act from and they are all very different, all of which look breathtaking.

Although some people mindlessly reviewed bombed it, it's nice to see that the game is receiving recognition. In an era where ♥♥♥♥♥♥ games like Fortnite or Call of Duty are highly played, I'm glad someone still understands what quality games are. The game deserves to be supported for years and years, and I intend to keep playing it for a long time to come. There are many praises to be told about the game. But I really want to keep playing it with my friends. So I'll just wrap it up here. The Finals is an outstanding piece of work. I highly recommend it.

Classic Like A Dragon Mid

I would like to begin by summarizing my history of the Yakuza franchise. Being a Yakuza fan, I enjoyed Yakuza 0 and thought Yakuza: Like A Dragon was a masterpiece. But I wasn't particularly fond of Yakuza 1-6. Among my reasons are dull gameplay, repetitive game and level design in every game, similar stories with ridiculous plot twists, boring main characters (excluding Akiyama), same map in each game etc. As you might have guessed, I've had issues with the repetitive nature of this series. I considered the Yakuza series the Call of Duty of the East, even though Yakuza is much better in almost every aspect. But Yakuza: Like a Dragon changed it all for me. Thankfully, the combat system had changed completely. It was extremely well made and we got a main character with actual feelings and one who displayed them. Ichiban is such a likable character and I enjoyed seeing him as the protagonist dearly. I completed Yakuza LaD 100% for the first time in a Yakuza game. That's how much I love the game.

https://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3080309736

After all this positive work from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios, I had high hopes about this game, so I pre-ordered it. I feel sorry to report that this is a game with the same formula as Yakuza 1-6 and I didn't enjoy most of it. A generic plot with characters that I am never going to remember after beating the game, predictable plot twists, and an undercooked villain. I mostly have no issues with the feel of the combat (except Yakuza 3) but this one feels kinda off. I cannot put my finger on it. One of the selling points of the game, the new "agent combat style" looks fun, but sadly is very weak compared to the "yakuza style", so I barely played the new style. They couldn't adjust the balance between them.

https://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3079834442

Let me move on to the positives of Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. The most important topic of the game: Yes, the cabaret club is very fun just like the previous ones. This one's slightly better because they made it live-action this time. Secondly, I can see that most of RGG's effort has gone into creating the castle. Yeah, the castle looks amazing and has cool stuff in it to spend time with. The graphics are getting better with every game. The interiors look extremely good, but the outdoor graphics need a little bit more work. I won't go into spoilers, but I just cannot skip that finale scene when Kiryu was holding a tablet. Phenomenal scene. It made me tear up! I hope it results in something beautiful for Kiryu in the next game. That sums up the positives of this game.

https://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3084505410

Unfortunately, the best point of the game is the playable Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth Trial after you beat the main game. During that hour, I had an absolute blast and it's barely visible that LaD 8 is their focus and this is only a cash grab. Dear SEGA, I know the main reason you made this game was to please Kiryu and the Brawler fans out there, other than making an extra 50 bucks per purchase, of course. But please just let Kiryu and this dated combat system alone. Because it surely doesn't work anymore for me. People will get used to turn-based combat. Look at Baldur's Gate 3 for an example. Just keep doing amazing RPGs after Like a Dragon 8 as well. I am immensely excited about that game!

Teaching AAA Developers A Lesson

I'm amazed by how great this game is compared to most AAA games I've played this year. As a matter of fact, it's one of the best games I've played this year given how bad things have been for PC players. I have been thinking about it. Almost every big game that was released this year was broken. Wild Hearts, Starfield, Jedi Survivor, Forspoken, Hogwarts Legacy, Wo Long, Redfall, MK1, Payday 3, and the list goes on...It was a very disappointing year for sure so I had no expectations from this one. When I booted up the game and saw that it had phenomenal graphics and ran smoothly, I was already pleasantly surprised.

The game looks better than most AAA games, and runs better than most 2023 games, even though I had some crashes. The lighting, texture quality, the atmosphere, and the visual effects are all extremely qualified. RoboCop: Rogue City has great mechanics, animations, physics, and ragdolls that make it very satisfying and well done. AI is also not bad. These guys accomplished what Bethesda still cannot even come close to in 2023. It's such a shame for Todd Howard and his crew, but I doubt they'll be ashamed though. Remind you, this game is 50$, 20$ less than Starfield.
https://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3075287972
As we return to RoboCop, the game was great, with fast-paced, high-level action missions and nice side quests to balance out the game's tempo. I did everything I could ever find and do in the game and I had a blast for 15 hours. However, I noticed doing all the side activities killed the rhythm of the main game and I got bored about halfway through the prison quest. After that level, the game sent us heavily armored enemies that took far longer to kill, which I believe ruined the level design and game feel. That's because the game kinda destroyed the "I am RoboCop, I am overpowered and I will bring justice here right this instant!" feeling. Yes, I still killed the enemies easily, but it took longer, which killed the tempo for me. It was still fun, don't get me wrong. The storytelling is neither bad nor great. I mostly enjoyed it but the role-playing stuff was not sufficient. They are mostly illusionary choices that don't have much of effect on the scenario, still better than Telltale Games though. Lastly, as I said before, the game plays so much fun, but I wish the game could reinvent the gameplay loop a little bit. That's a little problem for me, but just because the mechanics work extremely well, and the fact that it lasts around 10 hours, I was able to overlook this issue.

To conclude, RoboCop: Rogue City is an impressive entry by Teyon and Nacon that has potential. I honestly think most of the AAA developers should take notes on how to make a good video game from this game. The effort this small studio put into this is impressive. I will look forward to their next game. I am glad I gave this one a chance and I hope RoboCop 2 happens one day.

The Talos Principle is a great game with creative and smart puzzles. It has an interesting and engaging storyline with difficult and confusing philosophical questions. In terms of graphics and environmental design, this game is phenomenal for a 2014 game, and the soundtrack & sound design are also quite good. All these factors combine to create an atmosphere that is truly remarkable. Everything is polished to perfection.

https://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3044877848

My only problem with the game is that it is unnecessarily long. There are many great ideas and mechanics in this game, but they fail to diversify once the game reaches the last 6-8 hours. If Talos was like 12-14 hours rather than 20-22 hours, my overall view of the game would be way higher. Because it drags a little bit after some point.

Regardless, The Talos Principle is a well-crafted game that should be played by anyone interested in puzzle games. Highly looking forward to the sequel next month. After all these years, I hope they can improve upon the cons and improve on the sequel!

One of the worst games I have ever played. Not really worth talking about, so I am not gonna waste my time. They wanted to create a BOTW Sonic, instead they came up with a school project, so my criticisms wouldn't help this one. It's such a shame how low standards Sonic fans have to like this one. If you want to play a good Sonic game, play Spark the Electric Jester instead. It's a game made by one person that is way better than all Sonic games. Dear SEGA, just delete this franchise because you definitely are not making the effort the Sonic brand deserves.

Star Wars: Polish Non-Survivor

There is no polish to STAR WARS Jedi: Survivor, and that is its biggest problem. In a sense, it's like Assassin's Creed Valhalla. That's how unpolished this game is. I am not only talking about the famous super-duper messy launch, where the game only used 33% percent of my GPU and how it couldn't even grant an FPS of 60 even with a 4090. Now, I saw people on Steam saying that it had been fixed and is playable. Is that true? Not exactly. Of course, I'm not seeing 25FPS now, but around 50-60 now. Except for Koboh, they did not optimize that map because it is the largest one in the game. Koboh looks like trash graphically and also gives around 30 FPS. Except for that, the graphics and optimization are all right. I am talking about the jankiness and clunkiness of the animations and the game feel, which was a problem the first game also had and that was developed in a bad way here. There is nothing special about the graphics, the same as Fallen Order, so that is a negative.

So this is another Elden Ring, so actually a Breath of the Wild wannabe game. You have a world to explore with Metroidvania elements this time, like in Jedi: Fallen Order. Did they nail it like those games? Absolutely not. Every place you explore is filled with useless cosmetics. Not like in Marvel's Spider-Man where you similarly did boring activities to get skins, but in that game those skins looked nice and they were worth your time to collect. In Jedi Survivor though, you find dozens of mustaches, beards, hairstyles, and outfits that %99 of them look like trash and you will never use once. This is how non-rewarding exploration in this game is. You won't find any Botw-like shrines other than a few even though it was marketed that way, or original boss fights for that matter.

One thing the game improved on from the prequel was the stances. They feel different and have unique skill trees for them that improve the mechanics. But I think the most fun to play is double blade because of its cool animations. Enemy variety is good, even though you repeatedly encounter some enemies very often (besides stormtroopers). The storytelling and how they are presented during missions are even worse than in previous games. It's not even worth talking about.

https://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3037396469

Boss fights are perhaps the game's most well-done aspect, even if they are sometimes clunky due to unpolished feelings. They feel very fun to play for most of the time. Especially the lightsaber fights. I wish there were more than a handful. The game is too easy on normal difficulty, or even on the "Jedi Grandmaster" difficulty, which is the hardest one available. I wish there was a challenging difficulty.

Another great potential was squandered by EA, just like Jedi Fallen Order. As long as they don't give Respawn the time they need to improve and polish their games, they won't be able to make a fantastic game. This is likely to be the case for the third and final game as well. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is not a bad game, but it's too much of the same again, but with much less care overall.

Simply Beautiful

As someone who has been waiting for Trine 5 for almost three years, I have to say the wait has been absolutely worthwhile.

https://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3029887387

After playing the first four Trine games in a row three years ago, I felt as if I had discovered a hidden gem. Trine 1 was a game that was released in 2009. It felt magical and unbelievable in many ways. The physics and sound design of the game was top-notch, creating a realistic and immersive experience. The combat was incredibly fun combined with amazing sound design. The art was vibrant and stunning, and the characters were all unique and had their own special abilities. Versatile characters and how they could all handle each puzzle was genius, making every puzzle solvable with every single one of them and combining their abilities. The music was beautiful and perfectly complemented the game. All of these elements combined made the game incredibly enjoyable and memorable, and are carried through to the later games, excluding Trine 3. They went in another direction with that game. It didn't fit Trine but it was a decent game anyway.

As each new release came out, they implemented incredible new game mechanics while upgrading the physics engine. Throughout its 10-15 hour playtime, they introduce new mechanics and dynamics to the gameplay, which keeps the game flowing without boring the player once. That's Trine 5 for you. Everything is perfect except for combat, which I think they handled way better in terms of the feel in all of the previous titles. Trine 5 looks god-tier beautiful, very similar to Ori and the Will of the Wisps level art. I think that describes how beautiful this game, and this series look.

https://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3031299538

The Trine series is the best puzzle-platformer series out there with Little Nightmares. Thank you so much to everyone at THQ Nordic and Frozenbyte for making this kind of niche series continue. Also giving each game the attention, the budget, and the time it needs to develop. You guys raise the bar for the genre every single time. It's a testament to the power of creative thinking and commitment to excellence.

I'll just mention my short thoughts this time because as you know, Starfield is very near and I really want to play Trine 5 before Starfield comes out.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a solid game! The gunplay is great, they have very good VFX and they feel fun to play. Guns are pretty versatile and extremely fun to combo with each other. Amazingly, you can use your guns' different status effects on all enemies and bosses. Good storytelling with great visuals and graphics. Puzzles and other hacking sections are cool to change the tempo and add variety. Poor optimization, unlike other Playstation ports on PC. Overall, a really fun time. Definitely recommended.
