Solid utilization of idtech, and a good understanding of what made Quake fun. I'm having a blast.

First off, this is not AAA gold, this is a sprawling pack of modules and media duct-taped together through what feels like an aging engine. This is also yet another prime example of how Steam's review system needs an overhaul.

Do I recommend people play this game? Yes.
Do I highly rate it's quality? Nnnot so much.. This is a 2-3 star game with a 4-5 star paint job.

This is nothing new for Bethesda.. It's just more apparent how thin they spread themselves because of the sheer scope. Modders, you know what to do... Also, not that anyone that funds the industry will be reading this, but for crying out loud, stop relying on your customers to finish your games.

I WANT to like this, and after slogging through functionally a work-week fighting the UI the entire way, I can say that there are gems. There really are, but the overall experience is lacking.

My first ~10 hours of this game I summed up as: Fallout, in space, in PowerPoint.
Gameplay, transition, gameplay, transition, gameplay, transition.. The over-reliance on fast travel, and frequency of loading screens (that took maybe a second) that I'm rationalizing as either a limitation of the engine, or a sacrifice made for consoles/performance. You eventually reach a point where you can't simply throw a transition over this to cover up the seams. I was taken out of the experience so frequently I kept referring to other reviews to try and figure out what everyone else was crowing about, because that is NOT the game I was playing... The first impression is.. not good.

To sum up my experience with how well thought out the leveling system is:
I disabled a pirate ship that had me out-gunned, I boarded them and captured the ship. But I could not claim the ship as my own because I didn't have a high enough pilot level. Nevermind my companion that has THREE LEVELS IN IT... So I was forced to empty the cargo holds, shuffle back to my ship, and blow it up. I was not happy. This is RPG system 101 stuff. Perks should improve gameplay, not gatekeep it.

They bit off a HUGE project, and it shows. I hope they stay active/relevant long enough to follow in No Man's Sky's steps and continue building on it, because this is not a finished product yet.

Definitely a blast with a fun crew. Grab your implements of destruction, get rich, or die trying!

In short, this game had a ton of potential and never really did more than scratch the surface.

I want to know more about this world's story and how we got here, I'd have LOVED some sort of hub/lab area to learn the mechanics and test things before finding out that these two really fun spells I came up with don't synergize at all (and why), a deeper explanation of what the synergy system is, maybe a lore-friendly explanation of the skill/luck multiplier. etc.

I still highly recommend the game, but with the caveat that it needed more time to cook, and I'd have liked to see them take it further.

And honestly, with the number of times this thing has been on sale for A DOLLAR, there's really no excuse to not pick it up and have some fun at some point.

To be honest, I didn't intially pick this title up because it was billed as a roguelike side-scrolling dark-souls-alike.

It's so much more, it definitely stands on it's own, and there's so much fluid personality to the game. This is definitely something I'd use as a benchmark to compare against, were I working in the business.

At first I'd say it was like Terraria, in space.. But this thing just won't let me go..

From the videos and screenshots I was not expecting the game I ended up with.. Significantly deeper than I was expecting-- Right in the feels, good job on this one!
