Description
“A Covenant striketeam is launching an assault on an outpost controlled by a group of Heretics near the recently destroyed Installation 04. Both sides are prepared to hold nothing back. It’s show time!”

Drawing inspiration from the campaign levels “The Arbiter” and “The Oracle”, this mod attempts to expand and use those levels’ themes in the form of one of my AI wars. I always loved the combat flow of Covenant vs Heretics, so this AI war is perfect for fans of the H2 campaign levels! You play as two brand new characters in this mod: either a Covenant Special Ops Elite, or a Heretic Elite. The map features a great set of AI types, to keep things feeling unique with each time you play. Custom made Heretic Jackals by a member of the community also are featured on this map. (These jackals are very fun to fight!) The AI and their equipment carried are randomly chosen from a large table for each squad with custom weighting, so each and every engagement is different every time. Enjoy everybody!

Quick highlight of map features:

  • An endless AI battle that will last as long as your session goes.
  • Pathfinding for AI everywhere.
  • Carefully staggered AI respawning to not overload the H2 engine.
  • Custom playable SpecOps Elite when fighting alongside the Covenant, and a custom playable Heretic Elite when fighting alongside the Heretics.
  • Weapons placed on map that are respawned, for a multiplayer map feel.
  • Placed custom scenery on map for extra immersion.
  • Placed Overshield and Active Camo powerups that are respawned occasionally.
  • Many types of AI for each team, so each fight is diverse and chaotic.
  • A custom script that awards checkpoints periodically, so death no longer sets you back to your initial deployment.
  • All skulls fully functional from campaign, so players can customize the experience however they see fit.
  • All four difficulties fully supported, however the map is balanced best for Normal or Heroic.

…..And much more!

How does this mod work and how do I play?:

After subscribing to this project and letting the download complete, launch the MCC with anti-cheat disabled. Navigate to campaign, then Halo 2: Anniversary, and in that menu there should be an option that has appeared called "Burial Mounds Heretic Hunt | Endless AI War". Click on that option, and in the next menu select “missions”. There are two missions included in the mod. Both are identical maps, with the only difference being the side you are allied with, and the character you play as. To play as the Covenant Strike Team against the Heretics, select the “Covenant” option. To play as the Heretics against the Covenant forces, choose the “Heretics” option. The experience is highly customizable with players being able to choose the game difficulty, as well as which Skulls are active for the session. All of the Skulls are fully functional, just like in the campaign. After selecting your options, launch the level and have a blast!

Custom Assets Credits:

- Heretic Jackals created by Nullen. Find them here: https://www.nexusmods.com/halothemasterchiefcollection/mods/1787

Known Issues:

  • Your allied forces will still refer to you as the Arbiter. This also happens when you are a Heretic believe it or not.
  • Dropship drops NOT included with this map due to invisible barriers that prevent these ships from entering and leaving the level. AI will spawn near the bases ready to go in the meantime. The result is actually faster engagement times, with plenty of chaos.

@Atomic Maybe in a future update a 3rd Flood Faction can be added. In the meantime check out my Containment Breached mod. There is plenty of Flood action in that one.

@Jesus I understand. With the next update I’ll improve things with some custom content and vehicles.

Ho no I liked it but it could be funnier adding custom stuff, there are tons of new tags out now

@Gang Thank you for that compliment! It is very much appreciated! Stay tuned - it is looking like I'm going to have another awesome H2 AI mod coming out later this week if all goes according to plan.

Another absolute banger map good sir. Looking forward to future content from you as always. You are doing a great service to the Halo community!

@Jesus That's a shame you don't like the map. Sorry to hear that.

Lack vehicles and new weapons IMHO

@rylan Thanks for that feedback and suggestions. I’ll look into potentially adding some of those ideas into the next update of this map and all my H2 maps going forward. I’ll also see about maybe adding them into my older H2 maps.

Switches work a bit differently than the ones in H3 and Reach, so I’ll have to explore ways to get them able to apply player traits and command the AI squads.

The dialog issue is a funny one. The allied AI communications for any Elite or Grunt refers to the player as the Arbiter, even if you are a Heretic. The Covenant will refer to the Heretic player as the demon, as that model uses the Chief’s player slot in the game engine. I can of course consider making the Heretic player use the Arbiter’s profile if it is that annoying. It is kind of too minor in my opinion to devote resources to fixing.
