GuerillaSphere - The Goanna Clade

Description
GuerillaSphere aims to adapt RimWorld into a "green hell" sci-fi war setting. The modules associated with this series will be broader in scope and generally less canon-compliant than my Offworlders mods.

The Goanna are a reptillian people finding their origins deep within the jungles of once-uncontacted seedworlds. They are extremely well adapted to life in sweltering jungles, and are fiercely protective of their homes. Goanna possess throat sacs which, alongside providing them increased breathing capacity, also produce a dense oily foam used to put out fires. They are fiercely avoidant of fire, resisting even campfires for cooking basic meals. Gratefully, they are a very hardy people, and can eat just about anything.

The goanna live under a strongly hierarchical tribal structure, in which common goanna answer to their brood-queen or brood-king. Like a hive of insects, only the brood-kings and queens are permitted to reproduce, with few lucky goanna at the bottom of the ladder being granted the opporunity to share a den with them.

NEW GENES
Goanna Head
Complexity: 1
Metabolism: -1
Carriers of this gene have a broad, reptillian head with well-developed jaws. Powerful muscles connecting the jaw and neck allow one to eat more quickly.
  • +10% Eating (Boosts eating speed)
  • Pawns have - you guessed it - reptillian heads! (Pawns without reptilian heads don't find that sexy.)

Goanna Tail
Complexity: 1
Metabolism: 0
Carriers of this gene grow a muscular, whiplike tail.
  • Adds a reptilian tail.

Air Sac
Complexity: 1
Metabolism: -2
Carriers of this gene develop large air-filled sacs beneath their jaws. Air-tight skin allows oxygen to be stored, slightly increasing breathing capacity.
  • +10% Breathing (Boosts movement speed slightly)
  • Adds a noticable pouch beneath the head that matches the pawn's hair color.

NEW FACTION
Rough Goanna Tribe
An unfriendly, territorial tribe of goanna. They are open to peaceful trade, but are otherwise highly territorial. Warriors from their tribe won't hesitate in kidnapping invaders to offer their brood-chief. Their numbers, resistance to heat, and robust scaly bodies make them formidable foes in spite of their lacking technology.
Originating on this planet long before any others dared to settle it, they firmly defend their claim to the land. Considering humanity's history, few can blame them for their suspicion of outsiders.
  • 98% Goanna
  • 2% Brood-Goanna
  • Similar to neanderthals, raider-wise. You won't see brood-goanna raiders until you're very wealthy.

NEW SCENARIO
Stranded Goanna
Three goanna and their brood-chief, stranded after disaster. Challenging.
  • Start with 1 Brood-Goanna and 3 standard Goanna.
  • Also start with a donkey and two capybara, cute!
  • Comparable to the "Lost Tribe" vanilla scenario.

NEW PLANTS
Lumimold
A fast-growing fruticose lichen favored by fire-fearing peoples for its luminous properties. When planted in pots, they can act as effective light sources.
  • Can be planted in pots for sake of beauty and lighting.
  • Spawns naturally in tropical rainforests, even more so in swamps.

Lumigourd
A waxy, bitter gourd cultivated by fire-fearing peoples for its nutrient-dense fruit and luminous flowers. Its dense skin means it won't rot for a long time after harvest. They don't produce as wide a radius of light as other glowing plants.
  • More nutritious than potatoes, less nutritious than corn.
  • 11.5 day growth time.
  • Creates a small amount of light.

Glowconut Palm
A fast-growing palm tree cultivated by fire-fearing peoples for its delicious, luminous fruits. They have the greatest light radius of all luminous plants, and can serve as low-tech floodlights.
  • EXTREMELY nutritious, more so than corn.
  • Spawns naturally in tropical rainforests.
  • 25.5 day growth time.
  • Lights up a HUGE radius, slightly smaller than an electric floodlight.

PATCHES
New plants in tropical biomes!
Adds Glowconut Palms and Lumimold to tropical rainforests and swamps, giving the those biomes some naturally-occurring night sources at night. Makes them feel a lot more fantastical and alien.

KNOWN ISSUES
The goanna head graphic and air sac graphic appear to clip slightly in colonist portraits/creation screens. Tried everything I could to fix it, but it doesn't show up in actual gameplay so I'm not concerned.

Also, its entirely likely that having a bunch of light-generating plants on your map might affect performance on lower-end PCs. I playtest on a gaming laptop with decent specs, so hopefully there won't be too much fidelity loss on your end.

ADDITIONAL COMPATIBILITY
Ideology DLC
If you have the Ideology DLC, rough goanna tribes will have the nudist meme. Yay!

F.A.Q.
Q: You should add (thing, thing, thing) to this mod!
A: Maybe I should! If I do, it may not be for a while, though. My modding ability is still somewhat limited.

Q: Is this compatible with (other mod)?
A: Dubiously. This adds new plants as well as patching vanilla biomes. These are greater endeavors than I've previously tackled, so if you find conflicts, let me know. Full disclosure, though, I don't plan to patch for other mods unless I see a very good reason to.

Q: Do you plan on updating (other mods)?
A: Yes, but don't expect updates to come quickly unless more serious errors are occurring. Adding new flowery content is a secondary priority to making sure everything works.

RECOMMENDED MODS
Vanilla Pawns Retextured
Graphics Settings+
RocketMan - Performance Mod

Lumimold are set to need 51% light level to grow, but they only generate 50% light level so never grow in pots. :(

Also, same question as @Timotheseus, all the brood-goanna traits are Xenogenes instead of Germline genes, which seems odd.

Part2:

I also looked through the incidents and there doesnt seem to be anything related to Goanna spawning. Is a feature planned for the future on making this mod more like a hive with reproduction or are the Brood just rare, one-off, xeno-human pawns that you only get at the start of the game?
Timotheseus 20 May @ 5:16am
How do the mechanics of the Brood-Queen/King work? Do they reproduce by themselves? How do you get more if yours dies? So far the Brood seem to be just Xenos with no inheritable traits except HUMAN skin color. While you mentioned they are like insect hives there doesnt seem to be a way to produce more Brood/successor.

As it seems currently only regular Goanna can reproduce with regular Goanna to make more of the same despite the description saying that "only the brood-kings and queens are permitted to reproduce, with few lucky goanna at the bottom of the ladder being granted the opporunity to share a den with them."

I tried breeding a Brood with a regular Goanna and they just came out as green skinned humans with only a few traits related to Goanna. Im also a few in-game years in and I have not encountered any new Brood.

Since you're interested in rainforest Mods, I recommend adding compatibility with this: https://www.steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2028973691 .

No "Rimworld" play through in a tropical zone is complete without that Mod.

Great job on this one, I very much enjoy the textures of the plants.

ProfZelonka, not sure what you mean?

Krazyfan1, making a patch for that probably wouldn’t be too hard, might toy with it at some point!

do you think its possible to make it so that if you have the Boglegs xenotype active, these also get the boglegs blubber storage?
