ABOUT THE MAP

Millau is probably the most beautiful vanilla asset map you will find on the workshop. It is probably also the last map I will make for Cities: Skylines before the sequel launches later this year. It's been an absolute joy creating this map and I'm sure you'll feel the same way playing it while using the stunning location to build your own dream city or town. The surroundings are ideally suited for naturally limiting the scope of builds and creating a seemless transition into the countryside. Networks have been carefully handmade to ensure smooth traffic flow without sacrificing the rustic rural atmosphere of the area. The topography will force you to be creative about land use, much like in real life, but I'm sure you'll overcome and create spectacular communities regardless.

BACKGROUND

This map is, as you may expect, based on a terrain heightmap from https://heightmap.skydark.pl of the small town of Millau (Milhau in Occitan)[en.wikipedia.org]. You will find Millau commune in the Aveyron department of Southern France's Occitania region. It is situated on the confluence of the Tarn and Dourbie rivers and is surrounded by the landscapes of Gorges du Tarn and Causse du Larzac. It is an area of incredible natural beauty as I discovered while making this map but the reason I even looked into this area in the first place was the world famous wonder of modern engineering, the Viaduc de Millau (Millau Viaduct in English)[en.wikipedia.org]. After discovering that such an epic curved cable stayed bridge was in fact possible to build using the monorail track method I just could not resist making a complete map and thats the story.

MODS & DLC

Only requirement to play is the Mass Transit DLC. This is due to the 2-lane highway networks and monorail tracks used for the viaduct. I have used the mods Intersection Marking Tool and TM:PE to setup junctions and interchanges across the map. These mods are not required for loading or playing the map and traffic will flow fine without them but I would still recommend you use them for a few extra details and slightly more realistic traffic behavior. I would also recommend using the Network Anarchy mod which will make it easier for you to edit some of the more anarchistic original networks on the map. Here is a real world overlay map[imgur.com] that perfectly matches the map size for use with the Image Overlay Renewal mod.

ALLBUILDS

If you are a proud owner of the Bridges & Piers Content Creator Pack I recommend you to head over to allbuilds.org and download this MoveIt-export[www.allbuilds.org] which will let you replace the viaduct pillars with better looking ones. Place the .xml-file in your MoveIt mod export folder and use the "Restore" option to place it exactly in the right location. You may want to remove the default pillars before importing the better pillars. Here is a MoveIt-export for the full bridge[www.allbuilds.org] with the better pillars.

THEMES & VISUALS

For the screenshots I have exclusively used the Vanilla Temperate map theme together with the Vanilla European LUT. I have not used any other graphic altering mods meaning this is how you can expect the map to look on a completely fresh vanilla setup. A bunch of other custom map themes are showcased in the animated .gif-image below to give you an idea of how the map may look with different themes. Vanilla European LUT was used for all tested themes.

DISCLAIMERS

In an attempt to keep the map as vanilla as possible and avoid insane traffic I elected to use only 4 road outside connections. There are plenty of roads on the map that go toward the map edges without actually connecting to them. I call these dummy connections. If you want to make these functional you can unlock edge tiles with the 81 Tiles mod and use the Network Anarchy mod to create proper connections. I have used alot 183 309 trees on this map. This gives you about 78835 more trees to place until you reach the vanilla tree limit of 262 144. The amount of trees could still affect performance if your computer isn't up for it. I have also used 5 382 out of 32 768 available nodes on the map which is quite alot. This is due to the monorail track bridge requiring a lot of networks and also because I used roads to detail otherwise underdetailed parts of the map. You still won't reach the node limits without actively trying to because of how the map is designed. The rivers on the map may act a little wonky because of how small they are. I have put in multiple water sources along the path of the rivers to mitigate this but in turn, that may cause issues if you try to dam the rivers in some locations. You may experience some objects (trees, networks, rocks, etc.) flickering near the south edge of the map. This is game bug. I've found that disabling most DLC is the only fully vanilla way to solve this problem. You can use the 81 Tiles mod to unlock the outer edge tiles which will fix the flickering. The Common Ground mod is another option that also fixes the issue without requiring you to unlock any extra tiles.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

A huge thanks to Orcanows. Without their local knowledge and advice this map most likely wouldn't exist. Thanks to ACanadianMoose_ for helping to playtest and hype up people about the map. There are others I'd like to thank but this description is too many characters already.

SUPPORT

If you like this creation please consider rating it and checking out my other stuff. If you want to go one step further you can also tip me for a coffee or subscribe to my patreon page. Your contributions, however small, really helps motivating me to put more stuff like this on the workshop!

Merci pour vos commentaires! I agree, the Larzac is not very realistic in terms of rocks and vegetation. It was probably the hardest part of the map to recreate and the trees are mostly a compromise of what works best with the vanilla base game trees. If you want to make a improved version with perhaps custom assets from the workshop I support that fully!

Nice one. I live not too far, every time I have to go through that valley, if I got time at hand, I go through the old road, because it unironically gives you a better view of the bridge.

Does anyone have a good theme for this map that looks good and works well? love this map, the yellow just makes it weirdly desert-y or something
