INTRO
Demonoligist is an Unreal Engine 5 horror game released in March of '23. It is a very beautiful game and is extremely visually pleasing. The lighting is eerie and the atmosphere and ambiance is extremely well done and definitely sets the mood to make you uneasy from the start.

The gameplay can be compared to Phasmophobia as far as overall mechanics, but unlike Phas, this game is rich in scary aspects that are very well done and they do a brilliant job at immersing the player. The equipment is far more than your "typical" equipment and have a very unique and steampunk type feel. You can also perform exorcisms in this game that are dependent on the map you have chosen to run.

My favorite part are the hidden Easter eggs that are fun to explore and search for. If you see words written throughout the world, say them and see what happens. Just be prepared to scream, don't say I didn't warn you.

If you want more than just a ghost hunting simulator, this is it. It's very early access though, so be aware that there are only a few maps, but hopefully they work on this game for many years to come.

Maintaining a guide of this size takes quiet a lot of effort, I will do my best to keep it updated for future updates. If you find it helpful, it would mean a lot if you could show some love and give it a thumbs up! Please also check the Outro before leaving.
SAFE HOUSE
This game is beautiful, as we've already established. You get to choose which safe house you can use when you are hosting the lobby.

The default safe house is a tiny house. Hint... check the word in the bathtub ;)

You can purchase 3 safe house locations for a total of 4 (and a 5th in the works) using the Real Estate menu on the right most TV. There is a Pub with really awesome purple lighting, a large Lighthouse with a yard, and beautifully done Penthouse apartment once it's fully furnished.

You can also use the right side TV to Customize Safe House and purchase different items to add to your personal safe house which vary depending on the safe house you are using. You can have music, art, furniture and more!

Additionally, you can add several Pets to your safe house! You can add a kitty cat, a white puppy, a chicken, flamingo and turtle.
CHARACTER CREATION
There is character customization in this game, but only as hairstyles and outfits are concerned. There is only 1 male and 1 female character to choose from.

(The female character skin can use some work since it looks like a male skin thrown onto a female mesh, pecs and all. Even the hand for the female character is a male hand. Hopefully that gets upgraded in the future and maybe we will also get more inclusive appearances as well!)

As far as clothes, there are 4 categories. You need to purchase clothes from the right side TV in the safe house, since you start with only 1 outfit option. There are purchasable clothes in Head, Upper Body, Lower Body and Footwear.

You will then select Character Customization in the bottom right corner to change your outfit and details.
MAPS
There are currently 5 different maps in the game. When in a lobby, you can activate random map voting or click on the maps to manually select the map to play. Some of these maps require you to be a specific level to unlock. The maps are...

Abandoned House is the starter map. It's a 3 story home, with a main floor and a basement. An upstairs was added to this map in a recent update.

Cyclone Street unlocks at level 3. This is a 3 story home with an upstairs and a basement. It's a rather large map, probably the 2nd largest in the game.
This map is a slightly higher sanity drain rate.

Hospital unlocks at level 10. This is a larger map, but definitely worth the wait. This is a 3 story building, with a basement morgue and an upstairs.
This map appears to increase a ghosts hunting chance (not sanity threshold) once the objectives are complete.

Kuresawa House unlocks at level 15. This is a smaller map consisting of mostly 1 floor with a small upstairs. Overall I find this map to be less scary than the other maps, and it's very dark. In my personal opinion, the lack of ambient lighting or details in this map makes it feel unfinished compared to the rest.

Asylum - Bedlamis the 5th and final map in the live version of the game.

Further information regarding the exorcisms, payout and experience received in these maps can be read in the Exorcism section.

TOOLS + EVIDENCE
EVIDENCE TOOLS
  • EMF reader is a device that detects electromagnetic fields caused by paranormal activity. It works by reading the energy in a cone direction, so point it where the activity is thought to be. Once you have gotten EMF 5, you have collected this evidence.
    Price: $1,100

  • ESG raises paranormal energy and will display the ghost on top of the device. It's best to place ESG near light sources for visibility, and in the middle of the room or in pathways if possible. You can try to trigger ESG by saying "manifest" and "show yourself". These phrases have a cooldown of 30 seconds. This is a rare evidence and may take a while.
Hold G and use middle mouse to rotate to place it.
    Price: $1,300

  • Easel Canvas allows the ghosts to paint images from their dimension directly onto the canvas. This is a rare evidence and may take a while.
Hold G and use middle mouse to rotate to place it.
    Price: $1,300

  • Ecto Glass allows you to see ectoplasm (aka "c♥m stains") left behind by the paranormal. Ectoplasm looks like white glowing spots on a surface. You can also view things that are invisible to the naked eye. It has a 100% chance to spawn in the ghost room at the start of the game and will disappear and move if the ghost changes room.
Hold left click to look through it.
(This item is needed for the exorcism in Cyclone St.)
    Price: $1,500

  • Spirit Box lets you ask questions to the ghost and enables them to speak to you. The questions are "Can you talk?", "Can you speak?", "What is your name?", "Where are you?" and "When did you die?". You don't have to be holding it to your mouth to get a response.
Hold left click to speak into it.
    Price: $1,300

  • UV Light can show paranormal fingerprints on objects such as lightswitches and doors.
    Price: $800

  • Thermometer is used to measure the temperature of the room. You can also tell whether a room is freezing by seeing your own breath. Once you have gotten freezing (0C), you have collected this evidence.
    Price: $1,200

OTHER TOOLS

    Price: $3,150

  • Pocket Watch, is, well, a pocket watch.
(This item is needed for the exorcism in Bedlam.)
    Price: $500
INVESTIGATION
You will set up your investigation in your safe house using all 3 screens.
  • The screen on the left is where you select the map.
  • The screen in the middle is where you select difficulty, ready up and can review your selected equipment.
  • The screen on the right is where you will purchase your tools and add it to your loadout.
  • You can cycle through these screens once you have interacted with any of them by pressing A and D. The same can also be done in the safe house tv screens.
Once you have started your investigation, you will then turn to the 3 screens inside the tent.
  • The screen on the left is where you will see the name of the entity and how it will respond to the spirit box. You will also see your optional objectives and exorcism requirements.
  • The screen in the middle is where you can see your camera if you have purchased and set up your tripod cameras.
  • The screen on the right is your sanity monitor.
Regarding SANITY:
  • You will still lose sanity in this game even if you do not enter the house, so there is no point in hiding outside.
  • Talking ghost events will drain your sanity by 10 each voice line, and the Ouija board will drain your sanity by up to 50% per question.
  • Being in the dark also does not appear to increase your rate of sanity drain over being in the light.
  • Ghost hunting ranges are based off of average sanity when in multiplayer. The only ghost that is the exception to that rule is a Boogey.
  • Sanity pill restoration based on difficulty: 40% on Easy, 30% on Medium, 20% on Hard
So there are 3 parts to every investigation;
  • 1) Finding the ghost type.
  • 2) Completing all 3 objectives
  • 3) Performing the exorcism.
You need to be using your equipment to find the evidence. All ghosts will have a total of 3 evidences each. Be sure to mark those in your journal, which you will hit TAB to open. Also in your journal you can view information on the ghosts as well as your daily missions for extra cash.

You currently cannot hide from the ghost, the only place you are technically safe is outside. If you are inside during a hunt, you can survive a hunt by using your crucifix or by running to the farthest location available from the ghost. Keep quiet and turn off your flashlights once hidden, because voice recognition in the game can draw the ghost to you and so can light sources. On EASY, the average hunt duration is 42 seconds and increases with difficulty.

If you die during the investigation, you will lose any equipment that you personally have added for the specific session. You also lose any investigation equipment in if you back out to lobby while in a map. You won't lose any inventory that you have purchased that didn't get added to the equipment loadout.

Once you have found all 3 evidence, everyone in your investigation needs to lock in their choice of ghost. Once that's done you have 2 options...
  • Everyone can head to the car and you can leave and collect that cash and exp!
  • If you're feeling brave, you will proceed onto your optional objectives...
So, speaking of optional objectives...

(The screenshot in this section was taken by Demonologist.)
OBJECTIVES
There are 3 optional objectives to as the 2nd step of your investigation after everyone locks in the ghost type. It is advised to complete the objectives and exorcism, as that is the best way to get the most amount of money and experience in your investigations. The objectives are random and are not tied to the map, unlike the exorcisms. The list of objectives are as follows:
  • Collect blood bags.
  • Collect salt bags.
  • Collect the Ghost Orbs.
  • Find the parts of the gun. (Hospital only)
  • Find the time of death using the ecto glass. (Cyclone St only)
  • Find the silhouette using the ecto glass.
  • Have the Ghost blow out the candle.
  • Perform Ritual of the Pentagram.
  • Put the dead rats in the boiler.
  • Read the lost note.
  • Upload the computer data.
  • Correct the crucifixes.
  • Break down a wall using the sledge hammer. (Cyclone St only)
  • Find the puzzle piece and solve the puzzle. (Bedlam only)
  • Reach the room where the ghost died. (Bedlam only)
Now onto exorcisms...
EXORCISMS
Each map has it's own exorcism ritual. The exorcism is the 3rd step and is only available after the optional objectives are fully completed.

Abandoned House requires you to find 5 fingers in the house and then burn them in the basement. The fingers can be found on furniture or can be on the floor. Once all 5 are burned, a statue appears at the pentagram and the exorcism is complete.

Cyclone Street will require you to have the ecto glass. You will need to set the time you found from the objective into 3 antique clocks found on the walls around in the house. These clocks only appear once all optional objectives are complete. You will hear clock noises once the exorcism is complete.

Hospital requires shooting the ghost with the gun you have assembled after collecting the pieces from the objective. All the pieces will be glowing and can be on the floor or on a surface. It's recommended you turn off your flashlight to see the pieces better. The shotgun will be located on the lobby desk. You grab the gun and shoot the ghost during a hunt to complete the exorcism. The ghost will burst into black smoke once exorcism is complete.

Kuresawa House requires you to collect 3 katanas and put them in the matching pedestal in a back room. After you complete the katanas, a hidden room will open. Inside the hidden room are paintings on the walls. You need to memorize the position of these paintings and find the corresponding painting inside the house and adjust it to match the orientation of the ones inside the hidden room (rotate the paintings using A and D). Once completed, the planks blocking the well with break open. You need to find 3 pieces to finish the exorcism; a mask, comb and an egg. After that interact with the body inside the well to complete the exorcism.

Asylum - Bedlam has by far the most complicated exorcism of all maps and is not for the faint of heart. Make sure you purchase the pocket watch from the store before entering this map or you will not be able to finish. You need to know the time and pattern to get into a locked deathtrap room to complete this exorcism.

Do the following things in order:
  • Discover the ghost type
  • Find the missing deer puzzle piece (random location)
  • Complete the deer puzzle in the basement
  • Get the key from the chest (left side of the puzzle)
  • Go to the kitchen and locate the paper with "A" by the door to find the pattern
  • Open the closed door (DO NOT GO IN!)
  • Check the time on the pocket watch to decode the safe pattern to walk across
  • Carefully make your way across the room (note: as the time changes, so does the pattern)
  • Find 3 types of items; 1) roll of tape, 2) fuse and 3) scalpel
  • Put fuses in the fuse box
  • Put the scalpel on the electric chair
  • Use the tape in the execution room and repair 3 wires (1 left, 1 right, 1 floor by back wall)
  • Pull the lever to turn on the electric chair to exorcise the ghost and you're done!
GHOST BEHAVIOR + TIPS
There are 24 different ghost types, some of which you may be extremely familiar with due to other popular ghost hunting games, but don't be fooled! Some of these ghosts may act entirely different than they are typically known to, so be sure to read their descriptions carefully. For instance, the Demon in Demonologist is a very calm and collected ghost.
All data testing has been done on Medium difficulty.

  • Abaddon - EMF 5 | Spirit Box | Freezing
    Loopable: No
They go for targets that cannot defend themselves and will ignore you if you are holding a crucifix. They have been seen hunting at high sanity levels.

  • Agash - Ectoplasm | Fingerprints | Freezing
Loopable: Yes - in warm areas
It moves very fast in the cold and will slow down in warmer areas. This ghost will also have freezing breath when it appears.

  • Boogey - EMF 5 | ESG | Spirit Box
    Loopable: Yes
They target one player and become extremely aggressive based on that single players sanity, and they don't care what their targets sanity is. They hunt whenever they please.

  • Demon - Easel | Ectoplasm | Freezing
    Loopable: Yes
They are a very calm ghost in general, but is nearly impossible to stop it once you piss it off by overstaying your welcome, which can be done at any sanity level. They will chain hunt with no mercy.

  • Deogen - ESG | Ectoplasm | Fingerprints
    Loopable: Yes
They have no interest in anything other than their target. They are very aggressive and active when their target is nearby and are more likely to hunt when their target is close.

  • Goryo - EMF 5 | ESG | Fingerprints
    Loopable: Yes
It won't interact with ESG if someone is nearby.

  • Guipo - ESG | Ectoplasm | Spirit Box
    Loopable: Yes
These ghosts very rarely change their room and appear to be able to start hunts right outside their ghost room. They do not affect a players sanity. They can hear while hunting, so remain quiet. They may have issues with sight and speed.

  • Gul - Fingerprints | Spirit Box | Freezing
    Loopable: Yes
If gets extremely angry if you swear near it which will trigger a hunt, regardless of sanity, and it prefers when you don't talk near it.

  • Hantu - Easel | Spirit Box | Freezing
Loopable: Yes & No - they pick up speed as sanity decreases
If you speak to it or if it speaks to you, there is a chance it will curse you. The only way to reverse the curse is through sanity pills.

  • Iblis - ESG | Easel | Spirit Box
    Loopable: Yes
It will say things to you other ghosts won't. If it decides to hunt, it's nearly impossible to escape because it knows where you are but it is much slower when it's near it's target.

  • Jinn - EMF 5 | ESG | Freezing
    Loopable: Yes
Very active and prone to hunting.

  • Mare - EMF 5 | Easel | Freezing
    Loopable: Yes
It likes to talk but is less active than other ghosts. It won't hunt when someone is close to it.

  • Myling - Ecoplasm | Spirit Box | Freezing
    Loopable:
It loves fire and therefore fire has a soothing effect on it. It will put out fire before hunting. Can hunt at higher sanity.

  • Naamah - ESG | Easel | Ectoplasm
    Loopable: Yes
They are capable of nuking the sanity of a player by up to 70%. The trigger for causing this nuke is unknown. Can hunt at higher sanity.

  • Oni - EMG 5 | Fingerprints | Freezing
Loopable: No - speeds up when it has line of sight.
Will quickly destroy the sanity of those near it and is very fast.

  • Onryo - EMG 5 | Easel | Fingerprints
    Loopable: No
These ghosts fall in love. They will never hurt the one they love, and will attack anyone close to them due to their jealousy. Even in solo play, an Onryo will not kill their love.

  • Poltergeist - ESG | Fingerprints | Spirit Box
    Loopable: Yes
They love to throw things, and can lower your sanity by doing so. They calm down with nothing left to throw.

  • Raiju - ESG | Ectoplasm | Freezing
    Loopable: Yes
They prefer their targets to be alone, and are much more shy around large groups. Because of this they are more dangerous in solo play and can hunt at higher sanity levels.

  • Revenant - Easel | Fingerprints | Freezing
    Loopable: Yes
An early hunter, your sanity doesn't matter. They can hunt at 100% sanity.

  • Shade - Easel | Ectoplasm | Spirit Box
    Loopable: Yes
They hate the light and are much more aggressive in the dark. Keep the lights on!

  • Thaye - Easel | Fingerprints | Spirit Box

They age rapidly. They are much more aggressive when they are young and calm down when they age. They can hunt at 100% sanity.

    Loopable: Yes
They are fairly fast while hunting and are be able to teleport, even during hunts. They seem to like the light.

  • Yokai - EMF 5 | Easel | Spirit Box
    Loopable: Yes
You can stagger this ghost by taking a photo of it during a hunt. They can hunt at higher sanity levels.

  • Yurei - EMG 5 | ESG | Ectoplasm
    Loopable: Yes
I likes the drain the sanity off of groups of players. You are far more likely to get hunted in a group and it may weaken when alone.

INSTANT IDENTIFIERS
If the ghost ignores you and goes to someone else during a hunt... it's a Deogen or Onryo.

If the ghost refuses to kill you while you're holding a crucifix... it's an Abaddon.

If the ghost won't kill you at all in solo play, even during a hunt... it's an Onryo.

If the ghost hunts when you curse at it with no other apparent reason to hunt... it's a Gul.

If the ghost has freezing breath when it appears... it's an Agash.

If you lose sanity from the ghost throwing items... it's a Poltergeist.

If the ghost does a multithrow... it's a Poltergeist.

If the ghost speeds up when hunting if you are in LOS... it's an Oni.

If taking a photo of the ghost staggers it... it's a Yokai.

If the ghost appears to chain hunt to no end... it's likely a Demon.
CURSED OBJECTS
TAROT CARDS
Wanna play a game of tarot roulette?
The tarot cards are a paranormal card deck where each card represents a different energy. Unlike the 78 in real life, In Demonologist, a tarot deck contain 10 cards which allows for 10 draws. It is possible to draw the same card more than once. The tarot cards can be found randomly across all maps. If you're playing in a group, it's suggested to wait to draw the card just in case a player has died.

The cards are as follows:
  • Void can make an item disappear... as the name suggests.
  • Flame of Fate will raise or lower sanity depending on the color it burns.
  • Moon drains your sanity.
  • Sun restores your sanity.
  • The Devil increases paranormal activity.
  • Aggressive angers the ghost.
  • Death causes a hunt.
  • Slave locks the ghost to it's current room.
  • Guillotine instantly kills the player who draws it. (1% chance)
  • Angel will revive a dead teammate. (2% chance, and drawing this will grant an achievement)

OUIJA BOARD
Is anybody here? We would like to speak with you...
The ouija board can be used to ask questions to the ghost. This does come at a cost, since using the ouija board will drain your sanity so have pills on hand. Questions can cost up to 50% sanity. Also, be careful with interacting with it too much or holding it too long, if the board breaks, you will trigger a hunt. It is possible to still ask questions to an activated board even if you are not holding it, so be sure to always say "Goodbye" before putting down the board.

Some of the currently known phrases are as follows:
  • Where are you?
  • When did you die?
  • Are you here?
  • How old are you?
  • Can I have a blowjob? Yes, that's actually a question. XD
  • Goodbye.

VOODOO DOLL
Don't make me get the doll!
The voodoo doll is used to provoke activity in the ghost. To use it, pick it up, and one by one push the nails into the doll. And yes, I realize that there are screw heads on the top of each nail, but the sides are smooth and let's be real, nails would go in far easier, so we're sticking with the word nail... Anyways... Each nail will directly affect with the ghost, getting a reaction out of it. Just be careful, which nail that gets stabbed into the doll is random. If you stab the heart, you will trigger an instant hunt, so have a crucifix near.
SECRETS
And onto my favorite part of the game! The secrets...

There are lots of hidden surprises in this game, jump scares and hidden rooms. When you are exploring, if you see words or phrases written down, say them and see what happens.

There are also more intricate puzzles that require you to find multiple easter eggs in a row to unlock a much larger one.
ACHIEVEMENTS
There are achievements in this game, for all you achievement hunters. Luckily, all achievements except one are very straight forward with only one hidden achievement. The hardest of the achievements is resurrecting a dead friend using the tarot cards.

There is only one hidden achievement...
For the sake of not spoiling it, I will provide everyone the video that gives the biggest hint into this achievement. The only thing I will say is... pay close attention to the words. This achievement is completed in Cyclone St. house.

Boogey don't hunt no matter what the sanity player is, it just drain sanity AF if you use esm box esg just getting it in your hand can drop your sanity to 50% so you can be hunted just when you come in the house and found the room after 2 mins because no matter sanity you have Boogey will drop it and hunt you.. Espacially using esm wanted to reach 5 and it will reach 5 meaning he's very angry and drop your sanity by this 5 activity. You can use the box if you like for the fun, it will drop more.. There is no hunt at 100% sanity choosed just by a random purpose so in multi the players that will keep ESG in hand ESM and box will be dropped and one will be hunt according to the lower sanity.. You'll be happy to get 5 on esm, drop it and use thermo but you'll be hunt : just go back to the tent and check your sanity drop. If it's very low, it's boogey, not oni no abbadon no agash it's boogey.
I consider boogey to be the most violent demon in the game.

As of the latest update - Naamah has an instant identifier in that it steals your items out of your hand and moves them around the map when there's no light :)

Amp, regarding what you said about that Demon hunting. They get pissed if you spend too much time around them. If your friend was constantly in their room with the spirit box, that fits right into Demon criteria as a reason to be hunted. It could have gotten agitated depending on how much your friend was in the room and the "fuck you" could have been just a coincidence. I think you'd need to test it on a regular basis and see results to see if maybe the devs have added extra triggers.

It's been a few months since we've done testing, and not sure I'll be doing further ghost personality testing since Beckee is no longer in the Moderation team for the Discord.

Kobi, I'm not sure what difficulty you're playing on, although it sounds like you may be playing on easy, but it's true basically every ghost is loopable on easy. When it comes to medium and hard, there are some ghosts that will absolutely catch you due to their speed being greater than the player if they are hunting and you are in their sight long enough. I stated the testing difficulty in the ghost behavior section.

Also, to the author, I can confirm that my friend said "fuck you" in the spirit box and instantly got hunted, but by a Demon instead of a Gul, and died. This definitely lead to a false positive on the Gul for us and might be a detail worth noting.

"All Ghosts are loopable contrary to the claims on this guide"... I hard disagree - one time a Thaye started a hunt on me and it literally ran downstairs and into a new room and killed me before I even had time to lower the glass of the ectoplasm, let alone pull my crucifix out. My friend even watched the ghost fly across the screen at mach 10 past the front door. Most definitely are tho, especially if its like a poltergeist who has no special traits related to hunting. You can usually juke out a ghost that's faster than you once or twice but the lack of sprint stamina means it will definitely catch you if the hunt is long enough, and on hard mode they definitely are if you are in the building with low sanity.

All Ghosts are loopable contrary to the claims on this guide... I honestly don't remember the last time I died in this game...
