Auto Lights Off v1.0.1

Description
Mod ID: 2911056541

In addition to turning all light sources off and on at 6am and 6pm, this mod also activates light sources when a player gets close. There are four modes to cycle through - Always On, Always Off, Auto and Auto at 20m (For dramatic effect like in the video).

All interactable light sources can be configured individually. Interactable include torches, braziers, wall lamps, ceiling braziers and more. Crafting stations, like the campfire, are excluded. NPC camps, settlements, and dungeon lights are non-interactable, hence not affected.

This simple mod is akin to the one in early days of the game's release but could not be found anymore, with an additional feature of turning lights on/off by player's proximity.

This mod does not alter OG game files or change basic game functionality in ways that intrude upon other mods. There are always ways to switch things you do not want off. It should be evergreen against game updates and works well with other mods.

Modes:

Auto (Default)
Lights on at 6pm (Middle of dusk) and lights off at 6am (Middle of dawn).
Always On
Game default, no changes.
Always Off
Works like OG, no changes.
Auto 20m
Turn lights on when a player enters 20m radius of the light and off when he/she leaves. Only works at night (6pm to 6am).

To Use:

Press the Interact button (Default 'E') to cycle through modes. All interactable light sources defaults to 'Auto' mode.

Technical Details:

Having each light source checks itself against the game clock is not very CPU efficient and this mod does not do that. For instance, if each player owns a castle with 50 lights and there are 8 players on game, that is 400 checks a few times in a second. Yes, it would not make a dent in modern CPUs, but with other mods doing who-knows-what, it is just not good practice.

Instead, this mod runs a check for light sources in a wide radius around the player once a second to switch them on/off. So, in the previous example, 8 players, 8 checks instead of 400. If a light is already set correctly to time, no server calls will be made. If there are no players around, nothing is called.

Note: The scan for smaller radius 'Auto 20m' lights is performed a few times a second to make the effect more responsive.

Yes, I can make lightings be timed and a light source can light itself synchronously with other lights. Your castle can be turned into a Christmas tree, airport runway or a wedding proposal, but no, I am not doing that and have no plans to.

My aim, as with all my mods, is to make things simple, useful, and never overwhelming.

Will I have a ping problem if I use this in a singleplayer?
Chelyns 30 Apr @ 1:14pm
Ping went skyrocket after set it up, getting a constant lag every 5-10 second.

is there a way where I ca define the times when lights go on/off?... it should be 1900 to 0700 ... during dusk/dawn times it could be quite dark...

What @Dragonfire967 says. We were getting constant lag with frequent spikes as high as 600ish, and some rubber banding. Removed mod, back to normal, below 60ms most of the time. Also, settings don't persist through server restarts. Can't recommend, very cool and immersive, but the lag issues in particular are unacceptable.

So I have been running into high ping on my server non-stop since I set it up of over 200ms steady.

After doing troubleshooting, the ping immediately dropped to a steady 56-60ms upon removing this mod. Not sure why it is causing the ping to skyrocket (This was tested in a controlled small base with only 6 light sources (most actual bases would have a lot more than this) In much larger bases with a lot more light sources, ping can peak between 300-500ms until you move out of render range of the lights.

If you can look into what is causing this if it is something with the mod, it would be appreciated as I do enjoy the mod, just not the ping.

Hello, any chance for a possible way to change the auto off/on time coming in the future via console or a mod interface? :)

@IdeaPoet I really like this mod and what it does! Is there a way to change the default, for all lights, from "Auto" to one of the other options? Always On, Always Off, 20M. Thanks!

Man, good modification!!!
Could you do something about the door too?
Using various modifications where slaves patrol and determine their route, they always get blocked in doors, so you have to specially create a route for them where there are no doors

Admin only Settings would be nice.
