The way it currently works is that whichever of the two they find in their inventory first is the one they'll use.
So moving the potions before the bandages in their inventory should cause them to prioritize those instead
Would it be possible to distinguish between potions and bandages? From what I can tell: The way it is I can't tell my followers what to use and they prefer to use potions if possible.
While you CAN make your guards quickly follow you and set them with the hotkey, that wasn't the purpose so it will obviously be less efficient for that.
There wasn't need for such a display since you can see whether your follower is trying to go and engage in combat in which case you can instantly set them to passive with a hotkey should you not want that.
