Neo Mario

Description

Qua Mario is now completed and ready for download! The character has all sorts of new features such as three new power-ups, movement options from the 3D Mario games, coins, MunoPhone Touch support, and much much more. I've spent a lot of time on this, so I really hope you enjoy it! ❤️ Click on the big "Qua Mario" text above, or any part of this paragraph, to go to Qua Mario's page.

But hey, maybe there's still something interesting to see with Neo Mario - try selecting him on the Character Select screen, and then...

(Old Neo Mario description below...)

The most faithful Super Mario on the workshop! Inspired by TurretBot's SMB1 Mario - but rewritten from the ground up, and given a fresh new coat of Super Mario World SNES-inspired paint! Plus, an all new Reserve Slot system to give you an edge in the unusual combat Neo Mario offers.
(Note: In some of the preview videos, Mario vanishes instead of flashing when he gets i-frames. This is a consequence of video compression and does not occur in-game)

- Change your alt to play as Mario, Luigi, Blue Toad, Toadette, and Yellow Toad, with a distinct set of sprites and voice lines for each character!
- Hold Attack or Special to move faster, just like in the original Mario games.
- Run and jump around with an all-new movement system coded from scratch. I can guarantee that you've never in your life seen a Rivals character who moves like this. Mario doesn't snap around like a normal Rival - his momentum will feel familiar to fans of Super Mario Bros games, modern and retro alike.
- Stomp on his enemies just by jumping on them - Go for successive bounces to rack up damage faster, with each stomp doing more damage than the last.
- Enemies aren't the only thing Mario can stomp... Kragg rocks? Sylvanos flowers? Endless Abyss Hexes? Draculas? TETHERBALLS??? If a normal Rival can smack it, Mario can stomp it! This includes hittable articles from the Workshop as well.
- Spin-jumps allow you to bounce off any hitbox, and they send the opponent at a steep horizontal angle that can kill at the ledge. Keep holding the spin button as you fall if you want to go past platforms.
- Ground Pound like in the New Super Mario Bros series for a clean way to close out stocks. Press Up in midair to cancel it before you land. Hold down as you hit a platform to crash through.
- Twirl in midair like in Mario Wii to mix up your landing or stall in the air. Sadly, you probably cannot use a Wiimote to play Rivals.
- Use special character-specific taunts - Mario can hold the button to strike a pose, Luigi will mime dying, Toad will groove out like a complete dork, and Toadette will sass her opponents without mercy.
- Probably more things that I can't remember because I have ADHD!

When you get hit, you'll revert by one power-up state. You start each stock with a Fire Flower, but you'll have to play smart to keep it. You take knockback like any other Rival, and if your opponent can hit you into the air you're vulnerable to being comboed off the edge of the stage. When things are looking desperate, though, you do have a trick up your sleeve: Your trusty Reserve Slot, inspired by the system from Mario World but combined with modern design from 3D World and NSMB DS!

Press Attack + Special at the same time to access your Reserve Item. Your respawn platform is a handy Roulette Block, leave the platform with good timing to restock your Reserve!

What are the plans for Neo Mario's future?
- Plans are detailed in the "Qua Mario" section near the top of the page. Stay tuned!

Graphics Credits
The majority of Neo Mario's sprites are ripped from Super Mario Maker 2. Some are from Super Mario World. Thanks to the Spriter's Resource for uploading such clean and useful spritesheets! The "Peril!" indicator is from Paper Mario 64, also ripped by the lovely fellas at the Spriter's Resource.
Toad's Super Mushroom and Fire Flower dancing sprites are the work of MauricoN64, downloaded on MFGG here.[mfgg.net]
All characters' Super Mushroom and Fire Flower death/plasma-shock sprites are the work of GlacialSiren484 and Geno2925, downloaded on MFGG here.[mfgg.net]
Some upcoming power-ups use sprites from the fan-game Super Mario 4 Jugadores. The textures I'm using were made by Carnotaurus14.
A few sprites are hand-drawn by myself, such as the arms-out twirling sprite, the somersault sprites and some HUD elements. I am not a pixel artist, though.

If you found something you think I should know about, or if you've looked at my code and you're so disgusted yet fascinated you need to speak to me, or if you want to contact me for any other reason, feel free to shoot me a message on Discord (floralQuaFloral#0013), or leave a comment on this Workshop page. I promise I don't bite, and I appreciate every comment!

reserve dont work

The item reserve tends to not work, any item collected does not do anything to the character.

@verslycken.thomas89 Giving it custom AI is something I'm planning on doing eventually, but it's not a priority. Rivals of Aether's CPU AI is definitely not designed to play as a character like this, so it'd be a lot of work to custom-build my own that'll fight in a more intelligent way. For now I'm prioritizing making sure the character is fun for humans to play ;P Don't worry, though, it is something I'm planning on taking a shot at some day!

Heck yeah! Can't wait to see what you come up with. I really hope this gets more attention, because you sure as hell deserves it!

@mr.wiih Thank you, it makes me very happy to hear that! 😁 I've got good news, too - the next update to this character is going to be available REALLY soon. The code itself is basically ready for upload, but it's such a big update that I'm making a video presentation of the changes before I upload it, to showcase what's new and hopefully get some fresh attention on the project. I hope that this news is as exciting for you as it is for me! There'll be an update to this Steam Page and a message in-game once the update is out.

This is amazing. It's nice to see a different version of Mario that is actually freaking cool. I love how it almost doesn't feel like a rivals character, and can't wait to see where you take this in the future!

what i find interesting is that even tho this is a low tier (how good the haracter is againt the average character) because of te power up sytem & the lack of some important things like parry & stuff, its a a fun to play as character & i would say its a fun to play against character, but here is the problem, the AI is pretty bad, it barely attacks (a level 9 feels like i a level 1, maybe 2) & when it attacks its just a jump or a spin jump, nothing else & it only does any of those 2 once in a while (for a fight its a while) & it takes to long (or atleast to long for an AI) to get of the platform, so pls, no need to change the charater itself, just fix the AI pls
