Chaos Terrain Mod - Corruption Paints the Map Red

Description
Chaos Terrain Mod - Texture Update
Chaos Corruption Paints the Campaign Map Red with Blood & Gore
The creeping tide of Chaos now menaces your campaign, gone are dull grey stonescapes, now the soil is soaked with blood, gore, and foul daemon tendrils. Will you turn the red tide back, or will you paint the Warhammer world red? Witness the terraformation of a daemon world, or wash out every spot of murky hell.

Description:
Chaos Terrain Mod changes the Chaos creep dds files from dull grey landscaping supplies to a muscle and artery red texture befitting the triumph of Chaos. Wherever Chaos creep is applied because of Chaos corruption, the new red textures will be used.

Improved Textures
Textures now upgraded to a true wet blood and gore effect. Khorne's wetwork bathes the map. Improved performance around cities with low corruption now with less blockiness.

Limitations:
It still snows on top of Chaos creep, like vanilla Chaos creep the texture is not visible in Norsca, Naggaroth, or land with snow, and some other map textures will override it. Chaos creep does not render at the battle preview screen.

Chaos creep textures do not render on battle maps. CA did include a terrain dds for battle map creep, which this mod also replaces with a red texture, however like vanilla creep it doesn't appear to be applied in battle. Let me know if you have or can get vanilla or this mod's Chaos creep textures to appear on battle maps.

The way the game engine renders creep around cities with low corruption is a bit clunky and can appear blocky. This has been improved in the mod update.

Modding Creep:
There is enormous potential for a talented texture artist to make excellent creep mods for Chaos, Undead, and Skaven. The gameworld can be much more than an asphalt carpark when the Realm of Chaos wins the day. This mod tries to be fun and serviceable, but a talented texture modder could really do the idea justice. Any texture can be substituted for vanilla Chaos creep. See this mod's structure for the files to be modded. The dds files are located at terrain -> textures -> campaign -> default -> creep -> chaos.

There are four Chaos creep dds diffuse files, one normal, and one spectacular/gloss. They can be edited in GIMP, make them tileable, and save as DXT5 with minmaps. The diffuse and normal textures are 1024x1024, the spectacular is 256x256. Total War normal maps need to be orange, not blue, see Magnar's tutorial here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALr43DLoud8

The four Chaos creep diffuse textures are layered by the game engine around settlements and the campaign map. Some need to be fairly transparent to avoid hard edges, particularly 0, see the vanilla creep files for an idea of how CA implement it. 3 is applied in the circle immediately around cities, and 1 and 2 are applied on the wider map. Part of the challenge is the maps need to share a normal and spectacular map, and because they are layered by the game engine, need to be progressively more filled out versions of the same texture. I settled on a light texture for 0, and the full texture for 1, 2, 3. Better modders may have better implementations.

Compatibility:
Graphical mod. Only changes the dds Chaos creep files. Will work with anything unless it also changes those same dds files, then whichever mod loads first will apply.

Slaanesh Edition:
Red not your style? Want to paint the map purple with the soporific musk of Slaanesh? See the purple Slaanesh edition here:

Preferred the old textures?

By request here are my 17 attempts at a Nurgle terrain. I wasn't happy with any of them in the end but you may find one you like, let me know if you do:

Copy the packfiles to your "Steam\steamapps\common\Total War WARHAMMER II\data" folder and they'll appear in the launcher.

You can sill try making different seamless textures and seeing how the game renders them. If you're confident with textures or don't mind doing lots of trial and error, remembering to check how it looks in both low and high corruption areas and under different lighting conditions in the different lightbox regions (e.g. Lustria is cartoon oversaturated, Old World has yellow filter, Naggaroth is dark and desaturated, Ulthuan is bright and brilliant etc.), you can produce good results. I didn't have any experience before making the mod, don't let me discourage you from having a go.

They repurpose the religion mechanic from the history games to model corruption (uncorrupted is just another religion). If each god gets their own religion, which would make sense for Chaos vs Chaos competition, it would be possible. We shall see.

If undivided are in the game they could be their own religion (and hence their own creep) that still confers the same benefits on the monogod religion factions.

one can only hope @morven but from what you said this is a WH2 limititation on the engine it'self so thats understandable and i am ok with it. hopefully WH3 get's it done right with all 4 of the dark gods and there corruption style and the undevided one to.

A kaleidoscope map of red, green, blue, and purple, will be overlayed with itself a lot of the time and you end up with prominent yellow and cyan streaks and features (the blue-purple interactions between Tzeentch and Slaanesh look nice).

TWW3 should have a unique religion attached to each god, and hopefully a unique creep for each god that will either do the job or make modding it possible.

@Human72
There's only one Chaos religion (a.k.a. corruption) in TWW2 and from that only one type of terrain creep for Chaos. To get all four gods represented on the same seamless texture is difficult, both artistically and because the texture overlays itself as the engine renders it on the campaign map in different schemes at different corruption levels and at different map locations (and under different lighting). What might work at one corruption level won't work at another: the difference between what textures work for the small city rings at low corruption where the texture overlays itself four times, and high corruption when swathes of the map are painted with minimal overlay, is quite stark. I couldn't get anything to work.

is there a way to show the dark gods corruption of all 4 seperate or a united type of corruption or is that a no go?

OH that's cool! I wish I could do that. I'll probably find a good tutorial for modding then. A beginners guide perhaps. Another thing is it possible to change settlement skins when capturing a settlement?
