I think that today, Russians have mixed opinions about the 1939 war with Finland, and believe that the governments of both sides are responsible for starting the war. According to the Soviet version, the Soviet side needed the territory in the vicinity of Leningrad for protection, which at that time belonged to Finland. I think that the Soviet claim is legitimate, since during Hitler’s capture of France, Hitler bypassed the defensive lines of France via the Netherlands, thereby flanking France's defenses. So by comparison, the USSR was worried that Hitler could attack it through Finland.

On HARD with Fog On, I was able to take out two enemies on the right side using my good rifle, the SVT-40. There is a tree on the right hand edge of the map, "East" of the end of the road on the map's right edge as you face the enemy trenches. If you go to that tree, you can use it as cover to snipe the enemies with your SVT. Manually aim to where you think the enemies will be in the trench before they show up in your screen if you have Fog of War on like I did. Then when you hit an enemy, duck your SVT rifleman down. With your SVT gun you can shoot 10 rounds one after the other because it's a semi-automatic rifle, so if you aren't sure where an enemy is standing, you can shoot a bunch of rounds at once in that area. It also has stronger damage than an LMG, so you usually just need one shot.

On HARD with Fog On, I was able to take out two enemies on the right side using my good rifle, the SVT-40. Besides the tactic I described, you can also have a few soldiers stand in the cover of pine trees with lower lying branches, and manually aim them as a group to spots where enemies would be standing in the trenches and have them fire a volley together, then go prone. After killing all 11 enemies in the right trench this way and taking no casualties, my soldiers' veterancy didn't increase. I don't know why, because some kills they got while the enemy was in sight.

I beat the RKKA mission on Hard with Fog of War on and 0 casualties. But I still got the ending saying that people on the first wave of my soldiers with Lyosha got killed.

In the RKKA mission, it seems that you should be able to get the HMG in a trench by the river near your starting spot, but you can't pick it up - it's like scenery. You can get around the minefield by going on the far right edge of the map by the road up to the enemy trench. But you normally still get decimated by the shooters on the right side of the map.
