I was on a waiting for players prompt yeah, and he did join that way.

That pretty much means you probably weren't in the party. Did you have a leaderboard and did you have a prompt to join a level or "waiting for players" delay?

Tried it out, my friend was invisible to me, and I to him. Also nothing happened on his end when i pressed the buttons.
