KCD has a wildly entertaining story with excellent voice performances from a huge portion of the cast. The deliberate decision to make the protagonist an everyday peasant instead of a chosen dragonborn is not only crucial to the historical efficacy of the game and story, but is also just a breath of fresh air that really endears players to Henry (protagonist), making his character more vulnerable and more grounded in reality.

This game dared to try to innovate the RPG genre, and succeeded (mostly). The RPG elements like alchemy, reading, drinking, horsemanship, houndmaster, are either completely new to the genre, or have been improved upon drastically.

KCD tried to innovate the combat too, trying to make it as realistic as possible while keeping it fun and balanced. This did not really work. The longsword is very fun to duel with, and experimenting with other weapons and loadouts is fun (briefly) but the other weapons don't have the engaging gameplay of longsword, and some basic fighting mechanics (e.g., the camera lock) trade tested game design principles for realism. The trade-off is not worth it in the end. I still like dueling one or two combatants: the hidden potential of the combat system is there and it's palpable, but still hidden under layers of clunk.

an uncut gem: There is a beautiful, shining diamond of a masterpiece hiding somewhere in the clunky combat, unanimated actions, game-breaking exploits and goofy glitches that make up KCD. You can feel it at every turn Henry takes, just barely held back by the fact that your sword disappeared from your inventory 10 minutes ago, or that your dog has been carrying the same dead rabbit in his mouth for 2 in-game weeks.

This is one of my favorite games of all time. It is incredibly well balanced, making each of the many unique survivor classes just as fun to play as the next one.
