If your looking for the definitive way to experience the original Half Life, then look no further.
Crowbar Collective have poured 14 years into this project and it shows. Xen looks brilliant and is a massive departure from the sparse world of floating rocks of the original. The only point where I found the game to really get bogged down was actually Xen itself however. Gameplay in Xen is a far departure from the norm of the game with a greater emphasis on jumping and less on combat. The only part of the game where I found myself pulling out hairs in irritation was the fight against the Gonarch. The fight is all fine until you get to it's last battle area. Gonarch can turn on a dime and charge into you for basically an instant kill at any time, the only way to dodge is to long jump to the side. This is all well and good until you realise that the arena is designed in such a way that you get caught on a speck of dirt you never saw and then get charged down and finished off by baby headcrabs. Overall the game was brilliant, but the fight against Gonarch was a severe blight on an otherwise excellent game

One of the best games out there and arguably the best open world game on steam. Let down a bit by it's story but more than made up for by the fun to be had in the open world. It's a game where you can crash a truck into a camp, blow it up and have a bunch of decoy big boss' confuse the enemy, all while listening to the final countdown
