I've used to play a pirated version of this as it was too expensive. for a 2009 game, it still holds up well for story driven game though you need some patches and fixes to make it work better on windows 10. no performance issue so far after the patches. might rerun prototype 2 as well and update the review

it's a good game for 2010 game that has physics, good graphics with adjustable draw distance and actually quite an open world (depending on episode section). I enjoy the story but there are things that tends to make me left dissatisfied or annoying, which are:

* Mouse acceleration. It's on by default but what makes it more annoying is that the option to disable it is named as Direct Aiming. At first glance it sounds lie auto snap to target feature until I tried to find how to disable it.
* Movement are fluid enough but at crucial times it may go a bit clunky when you need to pick up stuff, particularly ammo and really need that instantaneous reaction to evade/run away from enemies
* some enemies spawn without indicator or indicator shows enemies are spawning but require you to go a bit further so it can gang you up in no time, usually unprepared to direction of their spawning,
* The enemies are decent but when they pull some poltergeist, it starts to become cheap. one time they really put a road roller thing that tries to ram you. sometimes looks stupidly funny but sometimes are plain annoying when everything rams you while you don't have space to evade, not to mention that the puny flashlight took almost forever to banish them. at least you have cars that can satisfy your vengeance towards these thing by ramming and banishing them at the same time
* the cheapest of them all is crows that decide to make boss/miniboss match interesting. again, puny flashlight, bad enemy indicator coupled with clunky movement at crucial times would throw any players into rage when they started to invest in the gameplay and story
* speaking about cars, the mechanics are fine but collision box is at times absurd when you got damaged because of that tiny slope
* action events are slightly messed up so make sure you have positioned yourself correctly to pick multiple items at the same time
* as the world looks open, you sometimes can get lost whether if you should jump down there only to realise it's a death zone. at least it's a one way to curse the game when you got fed up with above issues by jumping off the cliff.

Well, there are actually a lot of potential to exploit the game for each issue and make the game fun. still be sure to conserve ammo for the worst and stay out of the darkness

I used to hate Sectiods regardless of gen1 or gen2 but Verge helps me to overcome my hatred

Oh yeah, don't let the price tag fool you, the game has a number of changes in gameplay mechanics but so far I'm liking it

tl;dr: Don't get this at any given circumstances, even if Infinite Warfare Digital Legacy Edition is cheaper than this game. Go get the real CoD4 and enjoy everything on that and save the remainder of your cash to something else (bills/food/stocks/etc)

Refunded. While the visual and audio overhaul was great, for some reason movement feels janky. Not to mention that mouse acceleration that can't be disabled. Using the mentioned workaround also failed. To top with that, mouse will suddenly flicked to other direction at random times. I appreciate that the cutscene and intro audio volume is bumped, but my God it was blasting my speaker even at 50%. Glad I wasn't wearing a headphone. Really audio level need some work on the cutscene part, game is fine though. Level load is absurdly longer, even if it was because of HDD, CoD BO3 and CoD WWII had a respectable load time on campaign. Probably because most of the mission intro is short, whatever.

config.cfg of this game is the worst abomination in any CoD that I've ever own.
seta <memory address>
, gee, what a genius. CoD game typically uses
seta <variablename>
which makes it easy to config especially for low end computers.

moving to the gameplay itself, it's similar to CoD4 but I don't understand why friendly AI constantly pushes you around or blocking your path while you are supposed to take the lead at times. Had to kill friendly AI at times and the most surprising thing is, no "Friendly fire will not be tolerated". I don't recall Modern Warfare freindly AI used to have this behaviour but this made Hardened playthrough a chore because of your own friendly AI. Also I'm not sure if enemy AI would have a spawn point close to your saved location in the original game. Last time I saw bots spawning too close to a player is MW3 Survival.

Typically survival game made me bored in a few hours, this one apparently isn't. You have to be strict on resource management as resources are scarce, threats everywhere and people are dying. Given the settings, I think the developers chosen a good one to portray the civilian side of the war, if not based on currently warring states in today's world.

Still, this is another game that made me instant Alt+F4 many times after Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest

It's one of my greatest wishlist since I was 11 years old. Been visiting the game website and watched the trailer countless times until I decide to finally purchase it.

To compare with MoH:Frontlines, MoH:European Assault, MoH Rising Sun (which I never finished since the bootleg disc is corrupted) and MoH Vanguard, the mechanics are pretty okay although I prefer the health bar used in these previous games. Standard MoH, there are some challenging part especially ♥♥♥♥ Storm Elite moments in higher difficulty although you can outsmart them.

You can choose your landing point as opposed to MoH Vanguard, but only the first stage seems to give complete freedom. Other stages is fine, but isn't as free as the first one though it is still crucial to neutralize bigger threats that you wish to neutralize them early.

Difficulty-wise, although on normal, the enemy is quite challenging. MG42 is deadly, don't provoke the Panzers if you can't conter them and the snipers can be quite annoying at higher difficulty. Enemies with higher rank reacts better too, so outsmart them wisely.

Weapon system is ok, although I feel that there should be at least a configuration menu as I don't like some attachments even though it's handy. MoH Vanguard feels a bit better in this aspect. Control is weird at times, probably because this game is designed for PS3 in mind,

Overall, if you are looking for classic WW2 action before they were consumed by modern themed fps, this game is great in terms of action. Not sure if there's a solid story telling though except you are a super soldier (typical MoH). No one seems to play the multiplayer anymore, so don't buy this just to play that unless you have a few people that you can set up a match with,

btw EA LA is now DICE LA. If you noticed the latest BFV trailer and map, yeah they are trying to save BFV at all cost (though honestly game mechanics that were established by DICE SE aren't going away so it's a big letdown from BF1, even more big oof from BF3/4). DICE LA could try (and they actually did well with Mercury) but honestly it's hard to like it with the flawed mechanics introduced by DICE SE.

Early-Access-Rezension
Early review as of 20th May 2019

This early review might change over time. As of time of writing, my opinion is neutral (though I'll just set it to Recommended).

The Good

  1. The gunplay is nice. To compare directly with BF4, I like it better here.
  2. Plenty of servers, but there's a catch.
  3. The movement is pretty slick too, but there are some negative sides.
  4. Low end machine can run this game, assuming Ryzen 3 1200 + RX 550 2GB is low end.

The Bad

  1. Game install is too big for a 4 map-sized game. Probably do some texture compressions?
  2. From above point, this leads to long load times especially when the game is installed to HDD. This seems typical for UE4 games but so far Ace Combat 7 is probably the only one that is an outlier within this trend (fast load times, not extremely huge install size.
  3. At times, movements can be a bit clunky especially after spawning from squad members/leaders
  4. Servers are plenty, but it doesn't show where the server is hosted from. Maybe I could forgive the small player base count, but you (developers) might want to attract Battlefield players. (Maybe promos or... release Origin version after launch? They (BF players) tend to stick in Origin and cycles between BF games).
  5. I probably caught a few memory leaks during loading and returning to menu after a session. Need more traps for memory leaks.

The neutral
  • So far it is satisfying if I can get into match. Kinda sad that many reviewers that trash this game on the botched launch while not giving it another chance of spreading good words when new update releases. Not sure if they understand what Early Access means, but at least this game doesn't crash as often as BF4 at launch XD
  • Netcode seems done just right. I recall having pwned by low pingers and high pingers in BF4 for just having a 40ms ping. Here seems ok but I can't exactly verify since I can't exactly trace my ping, variance and other stuff I made this point neutral
  • It's actually East vs West. A bit strange but probably the lore is the whole West wages war to the whole East and vice versa.

    Other thoughts

Maybe include vs bots mode? just for testing and bug hunting purposes. Offline bots, that could work too.

Solid release. Didn't even went to my backlog

+ Enemy learns Dodge
+ Every aircraft has its own ups and downs
+ Runs well on low end hardware for UE4 game
+ Immersive radio chatter
+ Belkans cooking something again
+ Tech tree is a nice addition
+ There's a tank that can shot a jet like you've seen in Battlefield game
+ There's AWACS Bandog

= Learning curve is easy but difficult to master on keyboard XD
= Some mission can be quite hard even on normal, choose plane wisely
= Like in FE Conquest, spend resource wisely on tech tree
= Picking enemy isn't as easy, but you can do the same thing to them too

- Mission is a bit few but not that bad
- Allied AI doesn't really kill target when you need them, and sometimes is able to kill-steal your target too
- Ground forces relies too heavy on Aces
- Thunders can get annoying at times
- High G is quite hard to perform on keyboard + mouse, perhaps it's just me

To activate the game for multiplayer, redeem the key on Origin. Should be no problem when you log in using the same EA account on Steam version.

Though Origin version seems to be more updated. EXE build date in 2013 while steam EXE build date is 2011

Ever thought why there are 2 Collections instead of one, single Collection?

Mega Man X7

(anyway X Challenge is more or less the same as Vol. 1 version)

Feels more responsive than emulators so I do recommend it. Dunno why some people report input lag since I play on Ryzen 3/5 + RX550/RX480
