This game takes the essence of the original, the atmosphere, the isolation, the immersion, and wraps it in modern gameplay systems. Very little of the original game is lost in translation, the devs really need to be given praise for this alone, especially considering the age of the original.

There are a couple of minor gripes for me, nothing major, though. Firstly, the weapon selection seemed to remain fixed to melee, pistol and energy weapon for the majority of the game, then towards the end you get everything all at once. Maybe spread the weapons out more but limit the ammo to prevent the OP shotgun from making it easy early on.

Secondly, the puzzles took me off guard. I'm ashamed to admit, but I have grown accustomed to the hand-holding puzzles of the modern day, so when faced with the first tricky wiring puzzle I assumed I was missing a "logic probe" because it mentioned one and nothing I tried seemed to work. Shortly after scratching my head, I realised the problem, I needed to move back into the old world, I needed to pull my pants up and figure things out for myself. Once this clicked, I stuck at it and realised I had not noticed the notches around the edge of the discs. The puzzles aren't hard by any means, but they are tricky if you haven't encountered them before. On a plus side, the puzzles are mostly random and spread far enough apart so that they are a break from normal play rather than a "oh look, another move things around to unlock the next area task"

It has a strong identity of its own, iterating on Quake's basic gameplay, but with larger variety in level design and enemy design. It doesn't stray too far from its forbear, but has a solid selection of satisfying weapons, dense level design, a diverse roster of very well animated enemies, and excellent sound design. I wouldn't call its art style Lovecraftian, though, it goes in a unique more alien-fantasy direction that is not predictable. If you're an old school FPS fan at all, you really need to try it.

In general, I admit that playing this compilation is a nice experience. I feel that the control is responsive enough and simple. I can use the keyboard instead of the gamepad (my personal preference) and still enjoy games from this compilation. Of course having all "emulation" features like saving the game at any moment, and choosing display "type" is a nice thing, although I can't help for having the feeling, that I don't have such freedom in those options as in any standard emulator - even with such trivial things, as changing control (by some bizarre reason, you can only change the action connected with key, but can't change the key used for the control).

As for the choice of games - I'm very happy with the fact that we have both NES games (Contra and Super Contra), plus Contra III from SNES and Contra: Hard Corps from Mega drive. In my opinion, those four games are the main attraction of the collection. Arcade versions of the first two games are a nice addition (especially since they look and play differently), but I would personally prefer to have instead of some simple GB game or two Probotector games (that are basically reskinned Contra III and Contra: Hard Corps) for example Contra Force - I know, it's a spin-off, but still, I would prefer to have more "separate titles" instead of variations (or have all variations in one position, to switch between them). And ATM I feel like the "list of titles" is a bit artificially bloated. I'm perfectly fine with the Probotector variant, but it doesn't give much in terms of gameplay.

Commandos 2 is in my top 3 games of all times. I was looking forward to this remaster and really wanted to like it. The whole game feels like fan-remake within the Unity engine now. So many elements are popping out from the background, lots of bugs and it does not feel like the original did... In fact the original + the HD Mod is a way, way, way better game than this.

Also the missing coop MP is a dealbreaker

So, I absolutely loved this game from start to finish. However, I rate games based on their faithfulness to the game page description... And this one said I could use my trusted revolver to shoot my way out from even the most lethal of scenarios... And there was only one chapter, out of 13, that called for me to carry a revolver. The rest of the game was run or die, and no revolver in sight. So, when a game doesn't live up to it's description I start docking stars.

But, that issue aside, the game is freaking wonderful! I personally thought the pace of some of the scarier chapters was a little too intense for me, but I pushed through and I'm glad I did. This game pushed and pulled me around mentally in so many ways, and threw a good amount of jump scares at me to where I forced myself to take a few days off after the intense chapters.

The graphics and music and voice acting are all superb. The length of the game as a whole was perfect. Any longer and I would have lost interest, and any shorter and I would have complained about the cost. Thankfully I had grabbed it on sale, so I feel it was money well spent.

There is a heavy focus on story telling and a little bit of puzzle solving. Nothing too difficult. It's the running portions that were the most stressful to me, and even then they weren't scenes that I had to replay so many times that I got frustrated. They were manageable.

This is not a first person shooter, though one chapter contains that element. This is a great, dark, intense story. If that sounds appealing then you won't regret adding this game to your library.

Doom 64 was largely forgotten, because it arrived when games like Quake, Goldeneye and Turok were eating up all of the attention. Doom 64, simply put, is the true Doom 3. Everything you loved about Doom 1 and 2 are ratcheted up an extra notch here. The monsters are meaner, the atmosphere is scarier, the weapons feel punchier, and the level design is more devious than ever. Not simple key hunts, some levels require you to radically alter their geometry to compete. Secret levels are actually important as they contain powerups to a weapon that makes beating the final boss, a less painful endeavor. Doom 64 looks fantastic on modern systems, and you can even turn of that ugly melted texture blur found in the original version of the game! There are quality of life improvements like modern controls, and a set of "lost" levels that continue the story. All this for five bucks.

A great game, very challenging, with an incredible soundtrack attached to the gameplay, and a cool story. POSITIVES: + Very challenging, both in the main missions and in the extra challenges, to acquire new skills; + The weapons are quite different from each other, both in base damage and special ability; + Not too short, not too big, if you only consider the story phases; + The layers in the songs, the more you get right, the more instruments you play and the final layer has the vocals; DEMERITS: + The levels are divided into small arenas, where you fight hordes of enemies, over time it gets a bit cloying; + Boss battles don't change much either, deal damage to the boss in one stage, face a horde in the other, repeat until the end.

The game starts with a cold open - you're dropped into a situation you don't understand, and you need to make sense of things. If you have a low tolerance for ambiguity, this can be a challenge, but it's absolutely worth it. The game is fun immediately, even if you're not quite sure about the big picture, and as things come into focus it gets better and better. A fabulous thing about this game is that the big picture keeps expanding, and you have more and more reason and context for everything, making it more and more fun to play. The designers keep it fresh and rewarding, so each situation and location feels new and fun to explore and master. The game exploits its unusual structure brilliantly. The writing and voice acting is top of the line, and the level design is challenging but never unfair. This is a one-of-a-kind game, and deeply rewarding.
