For The King lets you explore a randomly generated world in order to find dungeons, slay evil bandits, and become the heroes of the land. Or more likely, become cursed, miss a crucial 95% chance to hit, and die inglorious deaths before ever meeting the final boss.

It takes a little bit of luck and a lot of strategic movement and tactical genius to survive the challenges foisted upon you. But, because you have the option to spend a limited resource, "focus", to automatically cheat the dice, it feels like it was your fault if you ever get a bad roll at an inopportune time because you could have ensured it never happened in the first place.

Plus, its one of the rare rogue-like multiplayer games, which makes dying a bit easier to stomach when you can laugh it off with some buddies.

I played this game with 3 other friends at the same time. We all somehow managed to go completely different directions after the game opened up. Each of us missed different key items, charms, and even entire zones and still managed to navigate the game. We avoided looking up information until beating the game, but instead compared notes on where stuff was, or shared strategies for a boss whenever someone got stuck.

And, like the oldschool Metroidvania games from which it took inspiration, you will get stuck. Repeatedly. Finding a powerup is not so much a key to completing a single area as it is unlocking all of the previous places you wished you had had it before. Every section serves a purpose, and more often than not, has at least one secret lurking somewhere within, which may be as small as a collectable, or as large as optional zones. If it looks like its possible to go somewhere, you probably can, but the how just might not have clicked yet.

One thing this game will not do is hold your hand. There is an unspoken expectation that you will find the right combination of gear and mobility items to defeat the challenges, or git gud trying. It may be that your best option is to turn away, acknowledge that you just aren't beating this one right now, and swallow those salty tears. Or you can be stubborn tenacious like me and rub your face on the cheese grater that is the Watcher Knight without having found a nail upgrade.

Though the looks may have updated, it still retains the classic feel of the game its based off of. Which is great, because you can jump straight back to retro style immediately, and reuse your old save codes. It also has secrets. Actual secrets. The kind you wouldn't be able to find without a walkthrough, trying everything, or by complete accident. It can be slightly infuriating at times with the same stupid enemy knocking you off that one platform, but that's just the old-school charm.

My only real complaint is because its an old game, some sections and powers feel like you hardly get to use them at all before they are never needed again. This is more a criticism of the base material, but it feels like powers were mostly about letting you access certain zones, and their individual special mechanics weren't needed much beyond that. I don't see how the sunken ship is enhanced by being a piranha-man other than needing it to board.

But again, those complaints are mostly to do with the base game, and not with the remake. Its a rather excellent remake, keeping the visuals and music close to their source material while still rendering them in HD if you want them, and even makes a point of deliberately leaving in typographical errors. Its hard to get closer to the source than that.

Sure, it's a little on the short side. But, this game knows what it is and what its strengths are, and it plays to them very well. Probably best if you don't look up anything beforehand, though. Wouldn't want to spoil the plot.

What starts out as a straight forward roguelite set in a literal bullet hell quickly devolves into something fiendishly difficult, while the absurdist humor ties everything together. Like Binding of Isaac, it is a little frustrating and somewhat bland until, several runs of unlocks later, the unique and fun items become more pervasive and soon you are tackling bosses far more intense than you thought possible with ease.

Its quick, quirky, and good, but I just don't know if I can play it for the entire day of Tuesday. I mean, honestly, there are only so many possible choices to see, and experiencing them all sequentially, while rewarding, does not take up much of a Tuesday. Not even half of a Tuesday. If it only took up half of a Tuesday then I could justify completing this great game twice over just to hear that delightful narrator again, but alas, no.

Rogue Legacy is a concise, focused action platformer that makes you experience permadeath without the sting of defeat, as the accomplishments in their lives will carry on to your next characters, better equipping you for subsequent attempts to vanquish the dungeon. Here, your children carry out your will to pillage the dungeon, and while some heroes may rise to greatness, in Rogue Legacy, you are born great. Or bald. Sometimes both.

Overall, it is rather fun, and there is quite a bit of replay value in it, chiefly due to the randomized nature of map and level design. It is not a game without its faults, and certain spells and effects interact strangely to leave lingering sprites. Starting out is slow, but when the stars allign to give you powerful genetic traits on a class you like, there is nothing more enjoyable to crush your enemimes, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of their coinpurses. There is not an extreme amount of monster variety or possible room layouts, and even though they added more room types you may experience deja vous in the castle at some point, especially when repeating the game on increased difficulties.
