I like this game WAY more than other "survival" games; this is more of an "open-world adventure". The world isn't some barren landscape, there's places to explore and things to see. You can build a base from scratch, or fix up some of the ruins that already exist around the world. Honestly fixing up the ruins can be a kind of ASMR experience with the right music. Totally worth checking it out!

For those expecting a cheap thrill, this game might prove to be a disappointment. This game builds on the story and the lore of the Mad Mind universe. This is basically a prequel to Succubus, and as such it's important to think this game in that context.

Gameplay-wise, this is a puzzle game at it's core that rewards attention to detail and critical thinking. The answers aren't always plain, but they make sense in the context they're in.

I've played a lot of other ARPGs and this one is one of my favorites. I like how it has a more positive-looking storyline than some of the others. There are a lot of gameplay mechanics that I think are really good here, like full rotation of camera and a (however limited) system of morality and rebuilding.

It didn't live up to my expectations about being able to rebuild the world to some degree, but still very nice. And it supports mods!

Survival games usually fail to keep me interested because I'm all alone. This game's AI villager system eliminates a lot of the problems with that. It's almost like a survival RTS, except in FPS viewpoint.

Obviously early access, but even with what they have I am liking it as it is. Can't wait to see how it gets improved.

Awesome story and scenery, unique perspective with playing as the dog, very realistic canoe physics, and great puzzle mechanics. It's a bit short, but still a very good game. Would love to see a longer more involved game in the universe; maybe like a prequel or something.

Words can't describe the amazing emotional journey this game will take you on. I have gained so much insight into my own personal mental history as well as my Autistic daughter. It makes you think and re-think, and how you have to actively choose to do good instead of bad. I know I can be (and have been) the monster; but it takes work and affirmative choices to be a good and loving parent to a child who sees the world so differently than everyone else.

It's short, yes; but it has such a great story and superb voice acting. Think of it like an interactive movie... an experience. They put all their heart and soul into it. There are a few places where textures are backwards and you turn wheels in the opposite direction that's marked, but they really nailed the overall narrative and gameplay, IMO.

So far I love this game, way better than Path of Exile for more casual play. It's like a cross between Chrono Trigger and Diablo. Combat is smooth and makes sense. You only get 4 action bar slots, but it forces you to focus on a particular play style; I think this is a good thing overall as it helps to prevent you from getting overstretched in skill specializations.

I have to change my review to negative after discovering this game attempts to install system drivers in Windows. There's absolutely no need for this aside from providing a backdoor into your system which can be exploited by either the company or other third parties. I recommend uninstall immediately to avoid leaving a backdoor into your system. These will place system startup entries named "AF_counter" and "AF_uuid" in your system startup, and refer to a system driver "steamapps\common\Once Human\NEProtect.sys".
Original:
Very nicely done survival game with lots of cool features:
  • PvE or PvPvE servers
  • Season-type gameplay with unique events, resets between seasons but you can export your progress to a non-season persistent world.
  • While some upgrades would give you an edge, most are cosmetic and it's not P2W by any means in PvE. It's atmospheric, and about spending time with friends.
  • Nice skill trees which allow you to focus on your style of game play without feeling constraining or overwhelming.
  • PUZZLES! Hacking computers and reading emails to get codes for nearby lockers, etc...
  • Most of the game allows you to focus on stealth or run & gun (bows/snipers are my personal favorite).
  • Unexpected enemy encounters, like mimic chests and other scary/horror-type elements.
  • Beautiful atmosphere, and very well-crafted world; lots of detail put into it.

This is such a great successor to the original Alone in the Dark and I absolutely recommend if you love story games, regardless of whether you played the originals. I remember playing the demo back in the 80's and then at some point later I got the full game. So many concepts were just difficult to implement in the limited space there was, but THQ has taken the series to a new level while STILL retaining the original dark mystery feel. The game play has lots of interesting throwbacks to the original games as options, so you can choose to participate or not based on level of difficulty; e.g., limited availability of ammo and "hard to find" clues. To be fair, the original game was slightly harder than some other titles that were soon to come out around that time (although many games around that time made clue-finding one of the most challenging aspects of the game, so I won't say it was any harder than most that were developed around the same time or earlier). But it's 2024! Good to have options for all the gamers of various skill and attention levels!

About the story and level design: I swear there were some elements that seemed to be taken straight out of Raiders of the Lost Ark and Shutter Island. These aren't bad elements to have, but I do feel that it is a missed opportunity to create an originally compelling story or puzzle mechanics. The talisman puzzles get particularly repetitive in Chapter 3 with constantly referencing the same diagram.
