I wanted to love this game, really. The storyline is great, voice acting is pretty good, but it fails in so many technical ways.

Its failure is not because it comes from a small development studio, it's because the developers refuse to listen to players' feedback. We told them we wanted manual saves, or at least to go back to an earlier save; they said "no, just trust us". Honestly once you get out of the monastery you'd probably never need one; but it's that early game in the monastery where you really feel like you need it.

The boss fights are about 25% broken, and the final boss fight relies too much on precise reaction time mechanics (which would be a whole lot easier if the mobs weren't glitching out and rubber banding all over the room).

Never playing another U*****t game again.

Pros

This game isn't terrible in itself. Read my played time: 275 hours at time of review. There are lots of good qualities about it as a game:

  • Great graphics
  • Wide variety of weapons/armors
  • Huge skill tree
  • Lots of different ways to play (excluding boss fights)
  • Viking lore / raiding is spot on - this is a great representation of how many of my ancestors lived

Cons

For all of the good things, there are a lot of terrible things about the game play here, which even still aren't the reason I down-voted:

  • The AC character movement model is somehow more clunky than ever before. Moving Eivor around is like driving a semi-truck. Totally unnatural and very frustrating.
  • Will auto-turn you 180 degrees to try to hit some jars across the room behind you rather than let you hit the breakable wall 1 foot in front of you. Game says: "Sorry, I don't care what you wanted to do, I am going to suggest you do this instead."
  • With some weapon types, it is impossible to actually break windows/floors/door locks/<any other thing you need to break>. e.g., If you are dual wielding Atgeirs, you're going to spend a lot of time shooting stuff right in front of you with a bow.
  • NPC voice feedback is so demeaning. They yell at you for getting the longship out of the mud that they put there in the first place, or passive-aggressively say you should be using the sail when not 500ms earlier, you were told that you can't.
  • Lack of Steam achievements, issues with cloud sync and F12 screenshots when launching from Steam. But honestly who was surprised; U*****t doesn't give 2 f***s about Steam users, this is just an afterthought to try to make more money on everyone who's not a hardcore U*****t fanboi.

The Reason

Sometimes the storyline is an arc. This time it's a train wreck, where the cars sprout rockets and fly off the nearest cliff. I lost the will to play for 2 weeks after terrible writers inflicted unavoidable "surprises" upon me in the main quest (Dag's and Sigurd's twisted view of betrayal upon me).

But the real sinker was, indeed, the revelation of who the characters were and why everything has allegedly happened the way it did. I had sworn off of U*****t's games after the terrible writing to the ending of FC5, only to be hoodwinked again by promises of cool gameplay in the AC series. I think the same terrible writer(s) are probably responsible for both.

So I'm making my displeasure known the only way I can, with my wallet.

As someone who has spent countless hours in other WWII games blowing stuff up, it feels calming, peaceful, and redemptive to be re-building it. The simple beauty of re-making what was destroyed back into something useful again is refreshing.

Remember all those who fought and died, but let's also not forget those who lived and rebuilt. Living on and persevering after loss is the greater hardship.

Surprisingly simple, surprisingly fun, and surprisingly challenging. Tearing apart stuff doesn't seem that hard does it? But there's a lot of nuances in exactly how you do it that make it require a decent set of critical thinking skills. I had a blast. Also ALL HAIL THE FURNACE GOD!

Truly an amazing game. Rich in story and character development, lots of nooks and secrets to explore, and gameplay can be quite challenging, too. Even better is that it's based off of real folklore!

Meh
Honestly this game is so unpolished, and it left me feeling disappointing. I liked Elex I, and I was really looking forward to this; but it feels like PB was just trying to rush a half-done product out the door to cash in on "sequel money". Also it's obvious they're hoping for the holy trinity with an Elex III.

Preface
If you haven't played Elex I you will have no idea what's going on here. There are cutscenes that try to convey what happened before, but they're absolutely meaningless without the much larger context of Elex I's storyline. When this game starts, you will soon find out that no matter what ending you picked in Elex I, they have canonized only the Berserker ending.

I played this game through TWICE just to make sure I didn't miss something significant story-wise; hoping against hope that it wasn't the lackluster product that I was seeing.

Pros
  • The weapon crafting/upgrade system is neat.
  • The per-faction skill trees are really nice.

Cons
  • Much of the dialogue is made up of generalized statements glued together, which make it completely unnatural sounding and leads to some confusion about how people are reacting or what they are wanting.
  • The character development suffers significantly due to the terrible dialogue.
  • There is a distinct lack of choice in all the choices you have; about the only thing you can reasonably choose is your faction, but it has no significant bearing on the endgame. The game forces you into a certain character archetype unless you want to be severely hobbled.
  • The ending straight up SUCKS. I get that they're trying to set up for E3, but as a standalone game this is just a terrible design choice. If you're going to have a terrible ending, at least make it one of multiple outcomes with different strata of terribleness.

Based on how this game came out, I DO NOT RECOMMEND to buy unless it is on sale and you were really into Elex I. Even so... just reconsider it anyway. If Elex III is this same level of garbage, I'm might just not play it and then just let whatever happy memories I had from Elex I be fulfilling enough on its own.

I love that the storyline is tied into the previous games, and finally offers some sort of resolution. But what's really outstanding about this game is how it demonstrates racial injustice in these times. We can't go back in history and experience it, but it does at least provide a glimpse. We should remember this kind of history, lest it be forgotten; but most importantly, we should learn from it.

Gameplay is great, but graphics engine messes up all the time. Still an offer you can't refuse.

Aside from aiming feeling very difficult, it's pretty good. Story line is really good, and character development is great. This was always one of my "bucket list" of games, and I'm glad to finally have experienced it.

I liked the overall story, and the main character. There is a heavy influence of both Greek and Shinto philosophies here, in the typical "technology is bad, nature is good" vein. But, this is indeed an interesting new take on the traditional cyberpunk post-apocalyptic scenario.

The ONE thing that really bugs me is how certain main supporting characters have very "wooden" personalities. They are portrayed as hardline traditionalists or intellectualists; and you're left with just an overwhelming sense of feeling alone when surrounded by people. Maybe that was the point, but it brought the overall atmosphere of the game down for me.
