It's an Adventure game (not an FPS), so it might take some getting used to for newer generations of gamers. It uses a checkpoint save system, and you will have to figure out what to do with a lot of trial and error (this means dying a lot--get used to it). Even if you knew what to do, executing it is still difficult; puzzles and action sequences are challenging even on easy.

The hardest thing to get used to is enabling mouse control in the fly-through fight sequences; press F to enable, and press again to uninvert the Y axis (I think you only have to do this once). Mouse movement is a bit more difficult on a widescreen display because of the resolution scaling; I recommend playing on a standard monitor if you have one available.

It uses DosBox, so you can edit the config files to customize the configuration.

TBH: This game is dated as ♥♥♥♥, but you're probably only here if you played it in your childhood. Buy it anyway.

NGL this game is very buggy. HOWEVER, I found the game more enjoyable than not, and there are several reasons I recommend it ON SALE:
  • There are a couple missions and interactions which are absolutely hilarious, the story writers did a really nice job at least.
  • It's good to see a different perspective of the ME universe; I think it helps break away from the terrible ending of ME3.
  • The design of many game systems were very well done (even with the implementation bugs). The overall tasks of research, exploration, and mining were not that tedious.
  • They made driving the rover extremely FUN, especially in the Low-G environment.
It's a shame that poor management and shortsightedness on the part of the board of investors has burned away any chance at sequels and any goodwill that the community had left in the Bioware brand. At the end of the day, EA is just going to be EA; shortsighted greed and poor management are just part of its culture and there is no way it will ever change.

People will complain about the launcher, but honestly you know EA will not host this game forever; buy it, play it, and put it away like you are going to do for the hundreds of other games in your library--enjoy it once while it lasts for the experience that it is.

Story- and gameplay-wise this is my favorite in the series. It's a heartwarming and sometimes gut-wrenching storyline of loss, tragedy, and redemption. Definitely worth the price.

It's good, but the story seems off compared to 1 and 2. The script obviously wasn't written in English, so the translation wasn't very good sometimes. Also there are inconsistencies with how the adversaries are scripted vs the personality they're supposed to convey. The "ruthless" Colonel and his band of thugs could easily handle Youkols and Kate Walker with their weapons, but they don't. It's like the story came out of an early 20th-century 7 year old boy's brain. Maybe that's by design? I don't know.

Great story-line and character development. The graphics were fairly well done for its time, but still lots of little details that make it still enjoyable to play today (weather animations, etc...). The UI is a bit simplistic, but it's the first in the series. It was definitely improved in Syberia 2, so it's harder in this game to distinguish which direction the scene exit will take you. The designers did a good job of hiding the hints and details, requiring the player to pay attention and remember things; you can always write stuff down between scenes if that's difficult, though.

Originally I think I found this by accident looking for "Cyberia", another ancient adventure-type game from my childhood. I'm not even sure if I played Syberia 1 or 3; but anyway I was enamored by the steampunk atmosphere and amazing story. Think of this like an interactive storybook. Really good for kids and those young at heart looking for a wholesome fantasy adventure.

Obviously, this is a little dated. You will notice the old Nokia-style cell phone from the pre-flip-phone era; but it is a good bit of nostalgia.

This game is really well-written, and fairly well executed as well. There are a wide variety of difficulty settings to suit all players and combat is fluid. The gear selection/upgrade system reminds me of Greedfall (not in a bad way by any means, just stating for comparison).

The BEST aspect of this game is the wide latitude given to the player in morality alignment; you can choose how best to hone in on your character and make it more immersive.

Update after playthrough: This game is one of my top faves of all time, storywise. However, be warned that it is LONG; there are so many side-quests available but all with well-written plots and character development. After awhile seeing the same unskippable animations are kind of annoying, but I think there is definitely good value for the money on this.

If you choose the morally "good" route, this game will make you sad for all the hate in the world.

The new engine looks surprisingly modern, despite the low-res graphics. Can't wait for Half-Life 3!

Early Access Review
This is a VERY early game review; but as of patch 0.09.1 there's a decent baseline of content and I think there's a lot of potential for how it will develop in the future.

The puzzles have real physics like object collision and varying levels of hints nearby. Some of them are actually quite challenging! The story line is fairly interesting, and I like how the lore is fleshed out a bit in pieces, like a mystery to solve.

I like this game WAY more than other "survival" games; this is more of an "open-world adventure". The world isn't some barren landscape, there's places to explore and things to see. You can build a base from scratch, or fix up some of the ruins that already exist around the world. Honestly fixing up the ruins can be a kind of ASMR experience with the right music. Totally worth checking it out!
