if you never played the original, but are a fan of games like overwatch, r6s, and other class/hero based shooters, Gigantic trumps pretty much all of them if it fits what youre looking for

The design of the core gameplay loop is one of the most well thought out and tight designs I've ever seen, it somehow manages to maintain this fast-paced, brawly playstyle while managing to stop it from snowballing out of control and giving each team a fighting chance

The characters are so incredibly fun and unique, with a great mix of melee and ranged playstyles, there really is a character for everyone
The game is deceptively simple to pick up but so incredibly deep and complex to master, I imagine the competitive scene to this game will absolutely flourish

Now I have to admit that there are technical issues, the game seems to be capped at either 60 fps or 30 for some people, personally the game seems locked at 30fps in menus and ui's and seems a lot smoother in-game
But if you don't mind that or have a lower-end machine it's never gonna be an issue

The other issues are more engine related and QoL based, unfortunately in today's market paid games like this rarely seem to succeed with a lot of games increasingly going free to play, my gripe with this in regards to gigantic is that it is the same game it was in 2017, it has received pretty much no remastering, no engine updates, and no QoL. So charging £15 for a game like this unfortunately seems like a stretch

the last point is more of speculation, but I really hope this game gets proper post-launch support and doesn't get abandoned like it did the first time, if this game receives QoL updates, and has things like the framecapping fixed, it could genuinely be such an amazing game, and is the fresh game people have been wanting in this space for a while.
If the game gets new characters, maps, or just more polish and stability, this game could be gigantic, pun intended
This is the most fun I've had in a multiplayer game in a very very long time, and if you're coming from a game like overwatch, Gigantic blows it out of the water in nearly every regard
If you have the money, played the original, or just think the game looks fun, I implore you, please try it out, support the devs, and maybe this game will finally find the flourishing community and active playerbase it always deserved

It's such a fun and good game but the meta is so heavily enforced that you'll only ever see a small handful of decks past gold V and it gets very stale very quickly

This game has a gorgeous visual style with a great mystery and characters, but that's about it

If you are looking for a game like Slay The Spire, or a game that would get you a lot of hours, etc, this is not that game. The deckbuilding is pretty lackluster and lacks consistency. The encounters also lack consistency and some fights can just roll terrible RNG and you are moreorless guaranteed to lose, which puts you through lengthy cutscenes and a lengthy introduction, with the same starting deck each time, meaning variety between runs is pretty limited straight off

The death mechanic is awesome!

This game has incredible visual design, and has a great story with incredible lore and really cool influences, that deserves a lot of praise because it is done wonderfully

but the gameplay itself just feels crippled by artificial difficulty. The combat system is great, it works really nicely

but the platforming (which is one of the main aspects of the game) is done really poorly, platforms can be unresponsive, hitboxes aren't always as forgiving as they should be (certain situations where u can slide under/jump just under a platform even for being pixels off of it, which is just very frustrating in some areas)

The main issue with the game is the overreliance on instant kills. One-shot spikes, pits, etc
In a metroidvania game being killed constantly in this manner gets very very tedious very fast, and just leads to me running through the areas.

And in combination with the one-shots is the boring obstacles that are there with platforming, a lot of the time they resort to slow moving objects which typically do a ridiculous amount of damage (the poison fog in particular was the most frustrating)
Most of the platforming boils down to waiting for an obstacle to pass, and then proceeding (which isn't necessarily bad, but it's done so often to where it starts to feel monotonous)

This can be highlighted in the Tres Angustias Boss. The boss itself is incredibly well designed, decently challenging, and fun!! but then the final phase comes around and it's essentially just getting knocked into an instakill fire over and over, which ruined the fight for me as it felt cheap and artificial.

If I were to count my deaths in this game, 90% would be to instakill pits, and a majority of those would be me getting knocked into them by an enemy that can.

The game also has very frustrating situations, where it will introduce one obstacle in an area, and introduce another in another, and then try to combine the two. Sometimes it works, but most of the time it just doesn't and leads to a frustrating situation which feels like something out of Dark Souls 2

The guilt system cripples the metroidvania aspect even more, as it forces you to go back through an area to get them rather than just leave the area and try exploring somewhere else (yes there are guilt statues that can clear it for a price, but that shouldn't be necessary!!)

none of these have necessarily been deal breakers, but I can never go more than an hour per session before getting unnecessarily frustrated by these things

The whole exploration aspect is cool, but most of the map is explorable straight away and there isn't any sense of organic progression, pretty much any upgrades at all are all optional or hidden behind hidden walls which aren't always obvious (seriously, a massive portion of the early game is behind a hidden wall that you'd never have known was there)

I guess I just don't feel much of a sense of progression with the game, I explore, collect some random, mostly useless stuff, and end up at a boss feeling unsatisfied?

and then fights like Edras were just flat out unfun and annoying, getting stunlocked or having no real tells on the length of his swings, and the end of the fight is also super frustrating

I want to love this game so badly but it just isn't happening for me

Overall, I do think this game is worth getting for the design and atmosphere, and awesome world design, enemy design, etc, if you can put up with the gameplay (which isn't terrible, but can be incredibly frustrating)
