If you play ranked! Just remember to have a another game to play (single player game are more like it) or watch a movie because yu-gi-oh player take some darn long on there turns you will have to do something to pass the time. Like they take soo long that I can probably get my bachelors degree in college and they still wont be done. Plus everyone in gold and up run the same darn deck and it soooo much fun. God I hate yu-gi-oh but I know how to play and the shoe fits. Its a ok game. Hard to learn but it can be fun. I think. 7/10 Maxx C

Meta decks in Yu-Gi-Oh are all about consistency and avoiding common hand-traps that brick your combo. The worst offenders of the highest ranking decks are usually not even marginally better than the second or third best decks right under them, they are almost always massively stronger. You will run into players running the top 3 decks of the game, usually determined by which deck counters which. For every other deck in the game, with some exceptions especially if you are either a very intelligent deckbuilder or netdeck user, stand practically no chance of surviving past turn 1. There are some decks that win on turn 1, so if you lost the coinflip, realize the combo you've seen before is happening and you don't have a hand-trap that answers it, you may as well concede because it is guaranteed you will lose.
If you're an old fan thinking you can come in and play good old beatdown and your favorite Blue Eyes decks, you are severely out of date.
In the modern game you either play the meta, around the meta, or very specifically tuned rogue decks that have enough consistency to take some games away from the people playing the meta.
You're not even safe in unranked casual play, most "players" there are bots or people practicing their meta decks before ranked.
Combine this with the rather pitiful income of gems to make new decks and the constant powercreep and you quickly find yourself overwhelmed if you decide to ever take a break from the game for a while. Good luck making more than a couple decks if you don't whale or play the game as your main hobby. If you're interested in playing I would HIGHLY recommend that you find a deck list online of whatever is the strongest on that particular patch, if you can make one of those top decks you will have a relatively decent time playing the ladder until the meta shifts. This will earn you decent rewards to get started on making whatever deck you next need to be a slave to.

For anyone curious, I played an out of meta rogue Traptrix deck that evolved to answer whatever the current meta was. Again, it is possible to find things you enjoy that work, but some archetypes and some cards are practically useless. Even within my dedication to Traptrix, most of their iconic Hole cards are completely unplayable.
