A fun puzzle game about decoding the magic words in bizarre liminal rooms. The writing and graphical style add to the vibes. With the printed pages that you have to use for each level it felt like a real escape room, scribbling down stuff in my notebook to work out the puzzles. Cryptic at times but it has a hint system and an official walkthrough that's written as hints rather than spoilers; I never had to consult an external walkthrough.

The time limits are quite generous and not punishing at all (I completed most levels in half the given time), they just provide a clever way for the game to discourage brute force attacks

This game partially fills the void Obra Dinn left in my soul; a similar type of fill-in-the-blanks-to-solve-this-snapshot-of-a-murder detective game, a bit easier in some ways and a bit trickier in others (overall easier bc there's no nonsense like the chinese topmen). If you loved that game and feel grief that you will never play it for the first time again, play this game now!

And unlike that game, this one has DLC out and possibly more on the way, because its format is flexible enough to make DLC campaigns feasible (where, as much as I would like an Obra Dinn DLC and buy it full price day 1 if it existed, where would you even set it? a ship is already the perfect location for its premise)

It has a very clever hint system that makes solving the puzzles blind preferable to using hints, but also makes using hints preferable to looking at a walkthrough, which is what a hint system is supposed to be like so this is great

my playtime at time of review reflects how long it takes to finish the main campaign, plus maybe an hour of leaving the game idle for the music (the music is great)

I bought these games and put off playing them for ages because I was worried they would make me anxious.

I played them over this last month and fell in love. The story and characters and music and gameplay and EVERYTHING

Beautiful art deco graphics. Compelling story. Symbolism gets a bit trippy especially toward the end. Play this game

After I bought this game, I stayed up until 3am playing it. I completed the rest of the endings the next day first thing. It's great, and I'm glad I didn't look up spoilers; three twists (the one Equitia tells you in the baths, the one you learn upon going into the cistern, and of course the one behind the white hallway) legit made me exclaim out loud variations of "wtf, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, omg". The writing isn't perfect, there are some things that feel like copouts, but those are all fairly excusable. Give it a play!

I didn't think I would like this game. I have disabilities that impair my reflexes and coordination, and get super frustrated at losing progress, so other fast-paced roguelikes such as Spelunky just bounced right off me. But this one was different.

First, the game itself is amazing. Design, gamefeel, story, art, music, sound design, all on point.

Second, the design fully counteracts both my reservations about it. The accessibility setting, God Mode, is genius-- read the polygon article about that if you want to know more. And as for the frustration of losing progress: the roguelite elements and story progression mechanics mean that losing progress in this game doesn't even feel like a loss. Even if you die comically early, you've probably gained some permanent resources or progression toward a prophecy (in-game achievements), and you've DEFINITELY unlocked new story progression since you can only get new dialogue with the characters back home by either winning or losing a run.

I've done 52 total runs with 8 successes so far, and I love this game
