I'm not surprised this game is received as "Very positive" on day one. I was also pleasantly surprised that this game was not as bad as I had expected it to be. I am not one of the folks who was rooting against it, but there were so many red flags before launch; despite those, a friend and I decided to pick it up during the Deluxe Edition early access period. I was leaning towards giving this a positive review upon my first impressions, but after completing the game and some side content, I no longer feel that way.

It is very obvious that no one wanted this type of live service game to come from Rocksteady as a follow up to their Batman trilogy. After completing the game, I can definitely say this is the #1 thing working against the game, but far from it's only issue. I didn't hate all of my time with this game, but it's not an experience I would recommend to most people. I think that if this game eliminated most of the things it gets wrong, I would say it's a good game. I want to list out what I think it did wrong, but I will also include a few standout things that I likes about the game.

What I liked..
Some good character chemistry
Some (most?) of the writing absolutely falls flat, but there are some standout moments in which the characters properly riff off of each other or say something funny.
King Shark
this character was the highlight of the game for me, his movement was fun compared to other characters, and definitely had the best one liners. His successes are definitely riding on the back of Dave Bautista's portrayal of Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy films.
Some of the world?
Metropolis is simultaneously big and small in this game, which I think is overall a good thing. It's not annoyingly "Ubisoft" levels of enormous for no reason other than to pad out the time it takes to get around. There is a lot of uniqueness to each area so it feels varied as you go from each part of the city, so that's nice.

What it gets wrong..
Constant Starting and Stopping
Dear lord this was awful. There are tons of bite sized story and side missions throughout the game in which you have to travel to the mission marker, see a menu screen letting you know that you're starting something, stand around waiting for NPCs to talk, kill a few guys, stand around waiting for guys to respawn, rinse repeat, then at the conclusion of the mission, you are treated to a pointless "who won the mission" screen that celebrates who performed the best in the mission, a screen that shows your loot you received which a frustratingly long animation that cannot be skipped, and then a final score screen that shows nothing of value. Each one of these missions is also greeted by and resolved by a radio conversation in which you have to RP walk around slowly until the next thing happens. There is so much downtime. Towards the end of the game when the live service loops started becoming more realized, there was more killing and less downtime which was such a nice change of pace, but at that point I was already so fatigued from the earlier missions. If these mechanics of loot and score screens just didn't start until you beat the story, that would have been much better than just slowing down the story.
Many cut-scenes just drag on too long
There were lots of story moments that needed to end much earlier. So many jokes overstayed their welcome and were fun at the start, but just keep going and going and ruined the enjoyment.
Boring Loot
The deluxe version of the game gave us guns that both my co-op partner and I didn't replace during the entire game. Loot that was received throughout the game several hours was frequently half the damage of the guns we got from the premium edition. There are several other slots of equipment that I hardly ever replaced, sometimes because loot that dropped wasn't better, but more often than not because I didn't even care, like it didn't feel like it made a difference. I'm sure at higher levels this will make or break your ability to play, but the normal difficulty during the course of the story, it didn't even need to be a mechanic you engage with. Considering this is a live service looter shooter, this is especially grim.
Lame Vehicle missions
Any time a vehicle is involved in a mission it's going to be bad. There are two types of vehicle missions; Escort missions (which suck) and Vehicle combat missions (which suck). The escort missions go slow, but the vehicle combat missions are somehow worse. It's not fun to fly around in these flying cars shooting endless rockets at things, but each of these missions also involves you having to rinse and repeat the process for three waves, which means more waiting around, waiting for cars to respawn, waiting to walk around and listen to NPCs chat, it just drags on and on. I have no idea how these made it into the game, they just make me feel like I'm playing a ps2 game and just helps make this world feel less believable.
Skill builds
The talent builds for each character are completely on rails, you have no agency to pick what you want to in the order you want, but instead just level up the part of the tree you're meant to, and you get to choose between 1 to 3 skills in that part of the tree. None of these talents were particularly interesting, and your ending build will all feel the same overall, nothing drastically changes.
Character Progression
The old batman games did such a great job of making the upgrades Batman gets tie into the narrative which consequently change the way you interact with the world. Small touches like your cloak becoming tattered after a specific encounter but staying with you the rest of the game were fantastic in the original Arkham Asylum. In this game, you keep unlocking upgrades that help you fight the Justice League, which all amount to your counter attack can now hurt the next superhero. This just feels so lazy by comparison.
The Story
The story starts off well enough, the set up of the main characters is fine and dandy, but once you start interacting with the Justice League it's all downhill from there. The fights are all terribly generic and repetitive, there is really only so much you can do with a big open world third person shooter. Even worse, the narrative resolutions of defeating each member of the Justice League is underwhelming. The worst among them; after you beat Superman, you are treated with multiple cutscenes in different locations and tons of tonal shifts that never allow you or the characters to live in that moment of the impact, consequences, or feel anything about what they just accomplished. You're just on to more objective markers to fight the next big bad. I would love to say that this game's story is worth experiencing despite all the other flaws, but that is simply not the case.

Mission & Enemy Variety
Editing to add this, but there is a huge lack of enemy and mission variety type. The game relies so heavily on you shooting the same 3 or 4 enemies the bulk of the game, and the only way it mixes the gameplay up is to limit your ability to kill your foes unless you do it under specific criteria (grenades only, affliction damage only, etc) which usually did not work for me. The gameplay was at it's best when you had your full arsenal online and lots of enemies to kill, the game constantly felt like it was restricting this throughout the campaign.

Despite all this, I will still probably play more of this game to knock out some achievements and check out more side content. I'll also want to come back whenever they release the first battle pass to see how hilariously unnecessary it is. You really don't need to worry about this one, while it's not the worst game ever as some will tell you, and it's perfectly fine if you do have fun with it, it's just not worth recommending.

I always thought this game looked cool, but always found a reason to talk myself out of it.

I just wanted to write something brief for anyone else on the fence. It's a lot of fun, very addicting formula, satisfying meta-game of upgrades, and great long & short term goals that keep you wanting to play just one more match every time you finish one. I'm so glad I picked it up!

I can't wait to see what's next for this game and anything else the Devs do. Keep up the great work!

Very cool that they came back to the 2D space. This is going to be my new go-to game for the Steam Deck.

Beautiful game. I'm so glad DON'T NOD was able to make this.

I played the demo and liked it but never thought about the world more than it's your classic Artsy Boy Climbs Gigantic Facade story. My appreciation and enjoyment of this world grew substantially once I learned more about those that inhabited Jusant before you.

I don't want to be reductive and compare this to anything else, other than to say it's an incredible journey.
