This game has a lot of sentimental value to me, but I figured it was time to do a playthrough without the nostalgia goggles. This review is all over the place, so be aware.

TL;DR- Its dated but still worth getting if you want a good RPG. I've played it over and over again for about 13 years.

Knights of the Old Republic 2, or KOTOR 2, is probably on my top ten list of all-time favorite RPGs. While I can't necessarily stand the combat, dice rolls and an awkward "turn based," system that feels dated by even 2005 standards, I still enjoy it for the rich lore, characters and overall world building it does for the expanded universe. I could go into extreme detail about the game, I've played this game over and over again since I was little, on Xbox and my first PC I ever had. Hell, I still even have my original copies somewhere.

This game, if you know what you're doing and have everything memorized like me, will take you about 30 hours to beat on average. It's a very short game, but its meant to be replayable. My time on Steam doesn't accurately reflect how much time I've put into the game, considering the platforms I've owned it own and how much I played it when I was younger. I've probably beaten this game around twenty or so times. When I say its replayable, I mean it. Replaying this game in 2021 though, I have noticed a lot of things that trouble me, even when I compare it to RPGs of the time, the lack of certain things, i.e a hotbar for force powers/fighting styles or more intuitive controls, really can put a damper on some of the fights.

Some of my pals and I discuss this game occasionally, it'll pop up if we're talking about story rich games and naturally, they always whine about the beginning of the game, which takes place on the mining colony Peragus. As a kid who didn't like to use guides, I hated Peragus. I always hear people say it takes too long to get through, but it does a wonderful job establishing the mood of the game and teaching you how the game works. I expected my recent playthrough to drag on at the beginning, but I was surprised that Peragus wasn't as bad as I remember. I almost wish Obsidian did more with it, because it made me realize how much I hate the place you go-to immediately after, which is Telos.

Telos sets up the precedent for how a bulk of the game is. Get quest, go across the playable area on a planet, do thing, complete quest. This drags on a bit. Some of the planets are more interesting than others, but if you aren't willing to pay attention to the lore and read a bit into what you're being told, you'll be dragging your heels to the end of the game.

Compared to the original game, I think Obsidian did a good job making the world spaces feel more realistic. A lot of people say that KOTOR 1 is more "Star Warsy," than KOTOR 2. I think that more superficial Star Wars fans will prefer KOTOR 1 over 2, simply because 2 doesn't feel like the movies. Obsidian always has very ambiguous writing, and a lot of it is up to interpretation, that's a turn off to some people. BIoware writes stories that have happy endings and are very cut and dry, like the source material the games are based on. Both games are enjoyable in their own right, but like I said, I believe people who are more superficial in their reasons for enjoying Star Wars will prefer the first game over this one.

Rant and ravings aside, here are some things to take note of:

This game does not have good support for multiple monitors and sometimes your cursor is on another screen which can cause you to tab out. If you don't pause the combat, you can take unnecessary hits and lose pretty easily, should this happen.

Save often.

One of the major bugs this game has, that hasn't been fixed, causes anyone you speak with to skip their dialogue. If this happens, save the game and restart it. That always fixes it. On my recent playthrough it happened about nine times across the 24ish hours I put into the game.

This game was not completed and its recommended that you get a mod that restores all the cut content. Most people recommend it on the second playthrough, but seeing as it restores items and sorta fixes some major bugs with the game, I'd recommend you get it for the first playthrough

You need v-sync on, and through my own experimentation, high refresh rate monitors need to be capped lower to play this game without instability.

This game's combat is all based on dice rolls and sometimes feels very inconsistent with how it works. The combat is very easy to dominate if you know how to abuse the attributes or force powers.

If you're still interested in the game, I'd highly recommend you buy it. It's worth the money, especially nowadays with it being cheap as dirt.

TL;DR- Need for Speed is dead. Don't buy this.

I naively hoped this would play similar to older NFS games, like underground/carbon, but its just bad. You can TELL it's a console port- stuff constantly pops in and out, you can't rebind mapping for controllers, the drifting just isn't enjoyable, using manual shifting just isn't as good as other racing games or NFS titles, your GPU and CPU usage shoot up (byproduct of it being on Frostbite,) AI opponents drive recklessly and make stupid choices, I could go on honestly. I only played it for an hour and a half, but I feel like I saw a bulk of the issue with the game and knowing modern EA, these issues would've persisted throughout the game.

It's just crap.

Too lazy to write a proper review. Here's an abridged TL;DR-

Super interesting concept, but no player-base whatsoevever. Awkwardly tight gunplay + constant balance tweaks. Has a matchmaking system and it supports private matchmaking, but as of writing this review there were maybe about ~63 players online. It peaks during the day, but you're going to be playing against some of the same people over and over again.

If the game wasn't dead on arrival, I'd recommend it, but like all neat conceptual shooters, great example being Splitgate Arena Warfare, all die within days if not weeks after some exposure online. Kudos to the devs for the concept, but frankly its too niche and restricts growth.

I'm going to just make a short review because I need to say it.

This game is FUN. It has an insane amount of potential. I'm a big fan of Ghost Adventures, and ghost hunting in general and I love getting the chance to role-play as Zak Bagans and making the easily scared people of my group go do isolation. I'm a sucker for this type of stuff I've been waiting a long time for a game like this and my first impression is way beyond what I expected from a simple unity game.

This game, hopefully, will go far. I'm already incredibly impressed with it. I do hope that the devs add in more areas, or give a community workshop with people making their own maps to explore and hunt on, but I cannot express properly how much fun I've had with this in the short time I've played it. It's been a very fun, and startling, experience.

One of the oddest controllers you'll ever use.
I have a love-hate relationship with controllers, and the Steam Controller is no exception. While my preference of peripherals leans more towards the more conservative choices, i.e keyboard and mouse for most things and specialized controllers for specific games (think a fight stick, DK bongos, or a steering wheel,) the Steam Controller did actually surprise me. I use it rarely nowadays, mostly sticking to my Hyperkin Duke, but it was nice for the few games I played while using it.

Pros:

-Probably one of the best controllers for non-game application.

-Works considerably well laid back, more casual games

-Weighty. One of my heavier controllers. It's a lot heavier than my Hyperkin Duke, which has been my go-to for Forza, BeamNG.drive and so on

-The dual track-pads aren't as bad as you'd think

-Lots of room for configuration + user-created configs

Cons:

-While weighty, it feels very cheap. When compared to the Hyperkin Duke, an Xbox 360 controller, an Xbox One controller, a Gamecube controller, Dualshock, or anything in between, there is a noticeable lower build quality. The build quality is not the worst I've seen, that being the newer Nintendo Switch Gamecube Pro-Controllers. Their plastic is cheap and it feels brittle, but the Steam Controller feels a tad bit more durable.

-Lack of practical application as a general game controller. Excels at certain games, i.e City Skylines, but is bad at others.

-Optional wireless dongle is incredibly small and prone to get lost if you don't keep it plugged in or with all of your tech gizmos

Things to note:

This controller does have a higher learning curve than your standard controller, as its maneuverability can be taxing for some when initially learning how to use the controller. The dual track-pads do take time to learn, and properly configuring your controller for each game is a must. The controller supports wired and wireless use.

All that being said...
I do highly recommend you pick up a Steam Controller on the caveat that you get it when it is on sale as I do not think its industry standard 50 USD value is worth what you receive. This is a highly situational controller, but is still a rather decent purchase if you're willing to learn how to use it. It'll arrive to you in a sleek black box, proudly wearing the Steam logo, with blue-ish interior.

I tried really hard to give this game a good chance and put a lot of hours into it, but after nearing 60 hours of just playing the multiplayer, its lost its luster...

Black Ops 3 is a dumpster fire, simply put. It tried to be an early adopter to the "hero-shooter," style of games, seen by Overwatch/Paladins. Treyarch ended up creating a "diet-coke" shooter that doesn't compare to the other similarly styled shooters of the era. It made a shoddy attempt to introduce new non-unlock weapons, that were all incredibly unbalanced, via an incredibly rigged crate system. It forced edgy personas and garish cosmetics down our throats, made the standard CoD melee system a joke, and it further perpetuated the dopamine release that is uncasing. Treyarch made plenty of missteps with this game. Sure, there were a few quality reasons to pick up the game when it initially released, but in its current state, its value has steadily decreased. I am, by no means, an avid Call of Duty player. In my early adolescence, I played the hell out of Black Ops 1, Modern Warfare 1 and 2, World at War, and Black Ops 2. Most of my time in the Treyarch CoDs was spent in Zombies though. Occasionally I'd be dragged to multiplayer by my friends at the time and it would be a mixed bag in how it play out. This game is no different than that experience. To streamline my thoughts on Black Ops 3, I'll simply make a list.

Pros:

- The movement, I guess...It's a low budget Titanfall that can be fun from time to time but ends up being more frustrating with how people spam it. Overall it is enjoyable, it can make battles more varied.
- Arcade gamemodes like Zombies is where Black Ops 3 stands tall. Treyarch did a lot with zombies in 3, most would argue its too easy now and I would agree, but it is still incredibly enjoyable wind down with or just mess around in. Now that you can vaguely customize your weapons, it adds a whole new factor of possibility to the gamemode. There are plenty of maps to choose from which also really adds to the gamemode.
- Treyarch's stance on modability and provision of modding tools has helped this game survive longer than intended. Black Ops 3 still receives a steady flow of custom maps, media, and assets for modded gameplay; however, almost all of it is for Zombies. Most modded multiplayer servers are dormant or dead, but modded zombies can be done fairly easily thanks to the Steam Workshop.

Cons:

- Pay to win weapons should never be in a game. They always give people willing to spend money an unfair advantage. When Black Ops 3 dropped it was 60 dollars, almost 100 for all the DLC. One would expect all the weapons to be in the basegame, but they were behind a paywall. The weapon uncase system is stacked against you, and sure enough, if someone gets one of these weapons it is bound to ruin your mood if you're playing multiplayer.
- The story mode is one of the weakest Treyarch has ever provided. It serves mostly to show off the abilities in multiplayer. The story is incredibly weak when compared to its predecessors. Black Ops 1 has a phenomenal campaign. Black Ops 2 had a confusing story, but it was well written. Black Ops 3 is just nonsense.
- Dead/Dying community. There are maybe less than a 2000 people playing at any given moment, enough said.
- Standard questionable CoD hit detection and overall CoD logic. Nothing is improved from its predecessors.
- Stale vanilla map list, only two to three decent maps, rest are garbage, two are just palette swaps.
- A shocking amount of bargain bin weapons that go underused just because of how weak they are. There is a strong meta of what to use in this game. Like every Call of Duty, snipers and SMGs always reign supreme

Final thoughts:

Black Ops 3 is just an overall garbage game that took too many steps back from its predecessors. What few redeeming qualities it has, really doesn't make up for everything that negatively afflicts the game. The hit detection, poor netcode, copy+paste weapons with their copy+paste attachments, microtransactions and so much more just ruin this game. After easily 50+ hours of the multiplayer, the core of the game, I can safely say that its just not worth buying UNLESS you just want it for sub-games like Zombies. When you compare it to Black Ops 1, or 2, which both had interesting stories and felt better paced in their multiplayer modes, or even compare it to another Call of Duty, Black Ops 3 just doesn't hold up. It's barely four years old and it's already aged horribly. The small PVP community that clings onto it is simply a cancer and it seems like it grows smaller with each passing day.

My prelude is a bit rambly, so if you wish to skip to the meat, just scroll down a tad.

The entire S.T.A.L.K.E.R franchise has been on my backlog for ages, and I've been meaning to play them for an incredibly long time. After a request to stream the game from a friend of mine, I was initially cautious, as the game played rather weird. After some of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R community welcomed me in and taught me the basics I was hooked. It probably helped seeing as I'm a sucker for urban exploration and post-apocalyptic games, and Call of Pripyat is an amazing mesh of that. A good game isn't without flaws however and I'll be breaking them down below.

Pros:

- Sound design- this game has it and its absolutely great. The voice acting is a campy B-movie with equally cheesy and comfortable actors. The guns feel weighty and somewhat realistic considering the age of the game. Even minute details like bandits and S.T.A.L.K.E.Rs playing the guitar feel correct.

- This game just feels alive in its own way. Encounters are everywhere. Sure, they might not be memorable, but they're everywhere. You can encounter a pack of bandits out in the sticks, gun 'em all down, loot the warm bodies and waddle all the way back to Skadovsk and as you're selling all that loot, you can hear laughter and quiet chatter as you collect your rubles.

- PC requirements, who needs em? This game is old as dirt, is pretty light compared to some titles from the era; it runs fairly easily and all minor hiccups I've had with the game have been due to my own issues with my gaming rig.

- There's still an active modding community for this game.

- The game provides a very "comfy," feeling even though it has very vague horror elements.

- A multitude of mutants make random encounters enjoyable. Sometimes its dogs, sometimes its zombies, sometimes its snorks and so on.

- Call of Pripyat is ripe with urban exploration and helps satisfy that itch without the risks of getting stabbed by a druggie, arrested, or stumbling onto a cult

Cons:

- The X-Ray engine is very problematic and is showing its age. While I rarely experienced any crashing, I've seen reports of stability issues.

- You need at least a sixth grade reading comprehension to play this game, as there is a lot of reading to do, some parts are voice acted and others are not.

- The AI is showing its age, as enemies are incredibly predictable. Friendly AI occasionally run into your fire, adding more chaos to a firefight. A majority of the mutants are laughably easy to fight just due to the simplistic AI.

Things to consider:

- The gun play is odd, as while there's weight to everything, the bullets behave similar to how they do in the Battlefield franchise, as they have slight trajectories and all that.

- The world space is divided into three major portions, one of which you're only in for a very short period of the game. While it's considered open world, navigating from region to region requires the use of a guide and rubles

- Anomaly hunting is a key feature of the game and can be frustrating if you're impatient.

In conclusion:

Call of Pripyat. simply put, is a great game. It was my first S.T.A.L.K.E.R game, even though its the third chronologically, and its already placed itself high up on my favorite games of all time. I've already started my second play through of the game, as I want to see what all the world space has to offer. Mods are further encouragement for me to continue playing, as I've yet to even scratch the surface of what the game's community has to offer. I highly recommend Call of Pripyat, to those who are interested in the series, or are just looking for an FPS with a campy feel.

Risk of Rain is a very unassuming game, that's incredibly enjoyable.

Risk of rain is a rather simple and unassuming Roguelike made Hopoo Games and published by Chucklefish, the people who made Starbound and published Stardew Valley. At first glance the game seems super basic and an easy timewaster, but I assure you, it ends up being more than that.

Pros:

-The playstyle potentials in this roguelike get insane and there are numerous ways to play each character.

-The skill ceiling isn't too high, but not low enough to where the game becomes horribly easy. It's a very good balance

-The soundtrack is simply amazing. Chris Christodoulou does great work, and most if not all the tracks in the game are memorable.

-The art style and visuals are so simplistic, but so appealing. There is a lot of attention to detail

-As time goes on in each "stage" a global difficulty gradually increases to keep you on your toes and caps at a max difficulty.

-Replayability: Like other roguelikes, this game is incredibly replayable as it has multiple playstyles you can do. Every run can be different based on player input and what they decide to do/how to play

Cons:

-Bugs, while there aren't many, there are some. It's nothing horrible like save failures, but they do get annoying. A good example is sometimes the multiplayer just doesn't want to cooperate.

-Setting up the multiplayer games can be a bit of a hassle for some users as it requires processes to be done outside of the game.

-Updates: Because the game has been finished for sometime, aren't updates to iron out issues with the bugs.

Final Statement:
Risk of Rain is just a great game all around. I'm not really sure what else to say. As someone who's not a fan of roguelikes other than Enter the Gungeon and Kingsway, I throughly enjoyed Risk of Rain. I recommend you consider the game at full price, but for sure pick it up on sale. You will get your money's worth.
