I'm just bored of it. To be fair, I've put almost 40 hours in but it's supposed to be a 50-60 hour game and it honestly lost me at about the 25 mark. At this point, I can best describe the game with a *sigh.* A few thoughts that aren't organized:

  • Bugs, obviously. It becomes tedious trying to navigate the game while fearing that any wrong move will cause it to collapse in on itself
  • Some of the features that seem neat in the beginning end up annoying and bleh
  • The ambition is praiseworthy but in some places it needed to be toned down, to make room for some of the other ideas that ended up half-baked
  • The main quest starts to become a slog. There's a high point at about 10-15 hours and it all starts going downhill after that
  • The monastery mission is awful
  • I ended up incredibly powerful after not very long and it killed any sense of progression
  • I was never hurting for money
  • Wild inconsistencies everywhere. It's hard to explain without going into another list and writing down everything as I play but they become apparent after a while.
  • The game doesn't always help you when it should. I'm not talking about putting a quest marker on the buried treasure, I'm talking about keeping note of the directions to said treasure. That's an actual issue I encountered: Someone gave me directions but the game did not record them in my journal (intentionally as far as I can tell) and there was no way to ask him again. So if you missed something the first time or just took a break from the game and didn't remember, you're out of luck.

It's just alright overall. The game needed some better management, because it feels like a good example of loosely defined goals and scope creep. It looks like the devs are still supporting it, so it may be worth your while in a year or two to take another look at a sale price. Not currently worth it.

There's also a DLC pack that looks like a glorified scavenger hunt for extra armor. Not sure how I feel about that.

My original review:

I've mostly been enjoying myself. I only encountered two gameplay interrupting bugs: None of the textures loaded properly the first time I launched the game (fixed by a restart) and a side activity to catch some birds removed my bird trap so I could not complete it. Not too bad considering how bad some others have had it. There's some general jank and oddness but nothing too out of place for a game such as this.

I really enjoyed the story and characters, and some of the side quests are super fun. There really are a lot of way to complete things and you can try a lot of different play styles. The combat is challenging but fun and rewarding, although I would have preferred a bit more introduction to fist fighting.

The game is actually not nearly as challenging as it was touted to be. You get your butt kicked in the first real fight of the game, but it's scripted that way and I didn't actually have too much trouble after that unless I was trying to face off against a large group (after a bit of training you can even do that). I easily found more than enough adequate armor from looting and I was never hurting for money. I saved up and expected to see some really killer armor in the store for a high price, but hardly any of it was better than what I already had and it wasn't terribly expensive.

Right now I have to give this game a no. Even though I enjoyed it, the instability is just not worth the time and effort of the average player. The developers seem earnest and really are fixing a lot of bugs but I think they're getting a bit too pressured and rushing through QA processes. This game definitely needed another 6-12 months, and I would recommend revisiting it then to see the progress.
