I'm not gonna make much of a review, because what I would say about this game has already been said.

Should you buy it? Yes, you should. It is great. Buy Half-Life 2 and the two episodes.

Instead with this review, I'm gonna tell a story. The story of one single combat medic I met along the way. Female_01.

She was busy nursing a guy on the verge of death when me and my group of rebels found her. And although she was a medic with a medkit, his death was guaranteed by a line of code beyond our existence.

As I turned into an alley I heard his death, and then she came running into our group and simply said, "I'll follow you."

We kept pushing through the city, ever closer to the Citadel. For awhile, it was easy-going. No rebels dead. Metropolice, however, took the full force of our resistance.

It was when the soldiers started showing up some of the rebels began to drop.

We were in a tunnel, making a stand while another medic planted some charges to blow open our exit. There were pieces of manhacks all over the floor, and the corpses of Combine were still fresh.

Then, just as I was about to leave, I noticed one of us weren't accounted for.

I ran back through the tunnel, worrying we'd lost a man. I was 100% we had, so I was just confirming that thought.

Then I found his arm poking around a corner, and I brought him back to the squad.

I split up, opened a door, and then got the squad moving again.

Blah blah blah, picture loads of gunfights and action. We lost some men, and at one point I was down to just 3 people. One guy with a pulse rifle, two medics, with one still being Female_01.

Carrying on, we fought through some apartment complexes, regrouping with Alyx. Then we ended up in the courtyard.

I was running around, shotgunning Combine and tossing nades.

Female_01 called out to me: "Take this medkit!" But I was too busy shooting.

While I myself was fighting off the ever-growing Combine assault, I noticed how she was now no longer behind cover like the rest of the 3 rebels, but was now out in the open, shotgunning Combine with no care in the world.

She was just standing there. Menacingly.

Eventually she moved, but I was certain that if we were there any longer, she would've been dead, and the longest running rebel in my squad would've had her run over.

If I'm not mistaken, the squad AI's always been a little finicky in this game. As annoying as the "Sorry, Freeman" and the "Let me get out of your way" moments are, I still appreciate their old school code.

It's been little over six years since SCP: Nine Tailed Fox v0.0.3 was released in the October of 2015.

Finally it releases, and no less on my birthday.

After six whole years, it's got to have been worth the wait?

The game releases in early access. I can't remember, let alone find any information pre-dating the release date announcement that anticipated an early access release. It's been in Patreon-supported early access for two or three years now, I bet most people were expecting a full release.

Even after six years, you can't complete the game from start to finish. If you look back at a Patreon supporter's video from a year ago, you probably wouldn't be able to see a difference from that to the February release.

I don't have any secret insight into how development worked and I certainly haven't watched every single stream on the TSS channel. But I think the team was struggling with different goals and concepts.

There are dozens of voice lines which involved working with a team of AI. But obviously at some point Third Subdivision Studios decided making the AI for them was too hard, so they scrapped it, got them killed, and made the game Containment Breach with guns, and no other twists.

Speaking of the team, the voices for them currently in the game; I have to criticise. They don't sound like a team of professional soldiers, more like airsofters. The guy wearing white is especially whiny, or just over-hyped. Somehow I doubt a specially-trained threesome would let one of their members get so excited about pizza day, gasping and growing a higher-pitched voice at the thought of Wednesday.

There's only one voice out of the three that sounds all right, and even with him there are inconsistencies.

What I don't get is there were perfectly good voice actors before, now there aren't. Strange.

The only redeeming quality about the team you were with was that they got killed and made some funny noises while they were being liquidated.

I really expected your character to meet up with another group of MTF in the sewers, preferably with the voices of the waves mode MTF, which are a lot better than the ones in the campaign. Unfortunately, that kind of team-up won't likely ever happen.

Something tells me TSS focused more on the multiplayer modes than anything else. It would explain the long development time, which likely comprised of fixing the multiplayer in the first place.

Now why, after all this, would I recommend this game?

To simply put it: it's free. The waves mode that likely took up the most time is actually pretty good. It isn't any Killing Floor, but there are some fun things about it.

It's all right. Get some friends, play it for a couple hours, or more, depending on how much fun you have, and decide if you want to keep it installed on your computer or not.

If you want a tense, single player SCP horror game, just play Containment Breach or its Ultimate Edition mod. Or any other mod for CB that's out there. There are plenty to choose from.

If you want a tense, single player and multiplayer tactical SCP game, you should look at SCP: Pandemic. Hopefully it'll be great.

I'll edit this review if any changes happen during the development of SCP: Nine Tailed Fox.

For now, though, I recommend this game for anyone curious about the multiplayer modes.

Horror movie serial killers:
Provide a degree of visceral entertainment for the audience.
May have witty one-liners.
Usually kills his victims quickly.
Painful, but quick.
If not quick, at least a minute long.
Offers the protagonist a chance to beat them.

People Playground players:
Provides entertainment only for themselves.
Speaks through TVs and holograms.
Can revive their victims only to kill them again.

Again and again.

Deludes itself into having no mercy as it only sees its subjects as mindless dummies.

There is no protagonist to beat the player.

The closest are us.

We give the player an infinite supply of "mindless dummies" and weapons, cars, nukes, and other lethal tools so it can play with them, not us. It may not be moral, but as long as the player's mouse doesn't leave its containment, we have succeeded.
