I bought this game around a decade ago, and because my Rockstar account is so old it is linked to a Comcast email address that has been deactivated I am unable to play the single-player. This game's multiplayer has been dead since I bought it, and I never bothered to check the servers or any such thing. This is Rockstar pulling a Sony, and now I can't play the game I bought because they want to feel special. ♥♥♥♥ those greedy shark-card salesmen.

This is by far my favorite single player game. Max is a classic self-pitying, never-catches-a-break but the bullets-never-land kind of power fantasy. He is a joy to listen to as he is so dark and depressed it boarders on comical as he spits out his old and worn Noir tropes. The gunplay and reactions of enemies is what keeps me coming back, and the plot while not sophisticated, is well written.

I only recall one character or two characters who are actually wholesome and likable Max is tasked with protecting some rich ♥♥♥♥♥ from Brazil for an easy pay check, and it quickly unravels into several serious plots, hitting some dark notes out of left field. Max was clearly a good man at some point, but from when this game starts you know he's been put through the ringer and has had enough, but he doesn't know what else to do, and he has a taste for bourbon and pills that pull him to an easy buck. His addiction, while in your face, is literally gamified to the point that you don't consider what you're doing, just that you need a few more pills to get out alive. It's only in retrospect have I come to appreciate that it plays as a driving force in the story that is internalized by Max and his worldview, so now he is blind to the reality that if he hadn't clouded his mind he may never have had to go through the trials of this game.

The gunplay is fun and tight. The game is mostly Max running around, diving, rolling, and so-mo blasting fools from the streets of Brazil to the high-rise security guard, all of them can get some. The enemies remind me of GTA IV's npc eating lead then eating ♥♥♥♥ approach, however it feels less clumsy and realistic when they stumble and full after being filled with holes. The slo-mo is always a huge selling point and it feels extremely well done.

This is a game I come back to again and again. I've played the story mode many times over, and I enjoy the self-loathing narration, the game play, the dialogue between everyone. If you like Red Dead Redemption's gunplay, and are interested in a noir detective narrator wondering if this will be the bottle that kills him, or if tomorrow will bring new dangers like the day before, pick this up.
