With four main routes, Senren*Banka is a story-rich (and feature-rich!) supernatural visual novel. The lore was built carefully, explained thoroughly across different routes, and takes more than 50 hours with the patch installed to read everything including the minor routes. We recommend Senren*Banka to both beginner and experienced visual novel audiences.

Distant Memoraĵo presents a dramatic story between Rin and Ruka and a heart-warming past between Ruka and Rei. The beautiful element of The Expression Amrilato series in its narrative is the language barrier that exists to separate Rin from Ruka while highlighting Rin’s homesickness from time to time. Although, you might feel disappointed with the lack of Juliamo lessons which has been one of the main features of the previous installment. Nevertheless, Distant Memoraĵo has beautifully emphasized Rin and Rei’s emotions by putting Ruka as their common interests.

Learn Japanese to Survive! Katakana War is an educational game and it fulfills its purpose of teaching katakana, one of three Japanese writing systems, to the player. The repetitive gameplay helps you memorize katakana characters easily. As this is a video game and not a dedicated learning material, you might find learning katakana elsewhere faster because of the time-consuming gameplay involved. We recommend this game to those who would like to continue learning Japanese after learning hiragana.

Technicalities
Starlight Shores is a visual novel developed and published by Delphinium Interactive and it is their first visual novel released. According to the visual novel database, Starlight Shores is on the same setting as Tidal Blossoms, another title Delphinium is a developer of. Although, at the time of this writing, Tidal Blossoms has not been released so I won’t be able to make a comparison. This visual novel is short and can be completed in about 90 minutes but be aware that there are more content than that.

The developer advises readers of mature content in Starlight Shores. Although, there are no explicit adult content, this visual novel uses drinking games as a storytelling technique and mentions some sexual references which might cause some readers discomfort. The characters depicted in this visual novel struggle with a history of depression and anxiety so readers should be aware before continuing.

Quality
Quality-wise, the background art is amazing and appears to be native 1080p. The character designs, however, is mediocre and wasn’t very appealing if we’re comparing it to major titles. No characters are dubbed in this visual novel. As for the music, it portrayed a peaceful aura that best matches the peaceful beachside at night.

Experience-wise, it’s not a very good one. The character sprites enlarges whenever he/she speaks. This might be annoying at first but I can understand the sprite enlargement because it’s one way of telling the viewer “this character is speaking” because this visual novel is not dubbed. The names of the characters are color-coded and while the idea itself isn’t bad, the choice of the colors used isn’t good and looks more annoying to the eyes. The lines transition by a slow fade in and a cut out. The slow fade is a big turn off for me and kept throwing me off as I read Starlight Shores.

Plot
Starlight Shores is kind of like a one-shot manga. After the introduction, the plot happens within the same time period at the same place. Starlight Shores features Will, the main protagonist, in this one-shot visual novel. The other characters include Theo, Lena, Alec, and Erika. Theo is Will’s childhood friend, Lena is Theo’s best friend, Alec is Will’s friend, and Erika is Alec’s girlfriend. Theo invited them to a weekend stargazing at a peaceful beachside. At least, until Erika suggested to play drinking games.

It’s worth noting that Starlight Shores is not a kinetic visual novel. The abundance of dialogue choices which can either land in a good end or a bad end with either Theo, Lena, or neither. This also makes Starlight Shores have a good replayability as different choices allows the reader to learn more about the characters or explore different endings. The choices not just affect Will’s relationship with either Theo or Lena. It may also affect Alec’s relationship with Erika. What I like the most with how Starlight Shores is written is that it’s the same plot from start to finish with different endings.

Conclusion
Too soon? The visual novel is short and there isn’t so much to discuss. Despite being a first-time developer in the visual novels scene, Delphinium Interactive did a great job on the presentation of Starlight Shores most especially when they employed drinking games as a way of presenting the characters’ stories. I look forward to seeing more of their titles but I hope they address experience-impacting features present in Starlight Shores. I recommend Starlight Shores to those who like short stories but don’t mind with some of the features impacting the reading experience.

Technicalities
Riddle Joker is a visual novel developed by Yuzusoft and localized by NekoNyan. This VN is rich in content and can take up to 50 hours to explore all the routes. There are five routes in this VN and, therefore, five romanceable characters. All the characters are voiced except for the protagonist. As for localization quality, there are few misspellings, but it shouldn’t throw off your reading experience.

Plot
Riddle Joker is a sci-fi/action genre featuring Arihara Satoru, the main character of the series. The setting of the series takes place in a world where some individuals posses superpowers and psychic abilities known as “astral abilities.” The people who wield such powers are called “Astrals” and they are looked down upon by society. Satoru and Nanami posses such powers. Luckily, they found an academy where Astrals are accepted and their abilities nurtured. By the way, do you like spy films? If so, you might just love this VN. The Arihara siblings are no ordinary students: these two are spies of a secret organization where the discovery of their identities would mean the end of their new-found high school life.

Story-Rich Content
The common route of Riddle Joker is about 10 hours itself while the waifu routes ranges from 5-10 hours each. With about 50 hours of gameplay (assuming you don’t retake the common route whenever you start a new game), this may be too much to some players who are just starting out on their visual novel readings. Every route is thrilling in their own which makes Riddle Joker an enjoyable experience.

If you like tsundere girls, you might just like Ayase’s route. Ayase Mitsukasa is the student council president and school idol. She’s dependable, outgoing, and cheerful. Although, she’s a totally different person when it comes to Satoru. This route is a must-take because it’s one of the most relevant to the main plot.

“Ara ara,” do you like big sisters? Mayu Shikibe is one of Kikka Academy’s researcher and one of the romanceable characters. Mayu fulfills the role of a dependable big sister with a soft heart. Her route is also a must-take because it is one of the most relevant to the main plot.

Despite not being part of the student council, Hazuki Nijouin is the dormitory manager where Satoru lives in and she’s very strict when it comes to enforcing the dorm rules. This makes her the most idealist character in the series. Deep inside, however, she’s a sweet not-so innocent girl who likes shogun and stuff toys. Her route is optional but still enjoyable.

Then we have Satoru’s little sister, Nanami Arihara. Although, Satoru and Nanami are not related by blood, but they still act like siblings. Nanami is that one introverted girl who only opens up to people she knows well. She might just be the best waifu material as she does the chores before they transferred to Kikka Academy. With her Healing ability, she is a vital asset when it comes to missions conducted by the secret organization the Arihara siblings belong in. Like Hazuki’s route, Nanami’s route is also an optional but hers might just be the most thrilling of the five.

As for Mibu Chisaki, she needs more love. She is the cutest and most outgoing loli in the series but with the least interesting and shortest route. She doesn’t have any astral abilities unlike the four and doesn’t appear on the key art. Mibu Chisaki is a first-year student of Kikka Academy and Nanami’s dependable classmate. Of the five, she acts like a spoiled little girl yet also acts mature. Her route is also optional.

Neat Little Features
Not only that Riddle Joker is rich in story, it’s also rich in customization! Customize the UI, the color of the unread and read texts, which character voice you want to hear, which buttons appear on the user interface, and customize buttons by mapping keyboard and gamepad keys.

The feature that I like the most is the flowchart. I must say this is a must-have for every visual novels with branching plots. Being able to switch choices on the fly without having to go through all the lines again or exhaust the save slots is such a wonderful time-saver. Visual novel developers should adopt the same plot flowcharts so readers get an easy-to-visualize plot progression without having to draw a flowchart on a piece of paper.

Some of the other nice-to-have features include bookmark-a-line, jump-to-a-line, and a sprite mode where you can choose a background, a character, type a custom line, and screenshot to your heart’s content. Note that you need to have finished all the five routes before you can access the sprite mode.

Conclusion
With an unpredictable plot progression, the uniqueness of the routes, the heart-throbbing romances, Riddle Joker is a great sci-fi, action, thriller, romance visual novel we recommend to anyone who enjoys such genres and to those who might want to explore visual novels.

This is no DLC. It's an entire game! Toussaint has the best atmosphere in The Witcher 3 that I'd rather stay in Toussaint than deal with the mess in the Northern Kingdoms.
