Early Access Review
Has potential, but many, many flaws

I can't really recommend it in its current state. The game looks good, and has some great concepts at work, but there are some balancing and design choices at work here that are the opposite of fun in its current state.

The combat's feel is awful, to be honest. None of your moves have impact. It's like you're swinging a pool noodle at the mobs. That's both on the animation side and the mechanical side. Enemies are deeply, deeply damage spongy in a way that really undercuts the whole point of the horde survival genre. Mobs of elites rain down AOEs (which is fine) and spam knockback sending you into said AOEs (less fine) with really inconsistent damage numbers. Maybe 3 damage? Maybe 97? It's a suprirse! It's not exactly "hard" or even overtuned. They just set the enemy sliders all the way up rather than create interesting mechanics.

Clearly the intent is that the annoying/uneven difficulty is offset by the massive number of options they give you for meta progression, which looks exciting! Too bad they're gated behind a grind that you'd expect from a 2009 Korean MMO. The entire point of this genre is to pick it up and play it for a few minutes, get some progression in, upgrade, and pick it up again later, not to spend hours replaying it over and over to grind out an achievement, only to earn the most marginally incremental progression. It really seems like a lot of decisions were made to pad out the play time at the expense of making the game enjoyable.

It's still early access, so these problems may improve, but in its current state it's less enjoyable than a lot of the $5 entries in the genre
