Edit 2024: The only good thing that has come out of GTA 5 definitely is the modding community. With mods you're not only able to actually fix many of GTA 5's shortcomings and questionable design decisions, but also introduce new and novel content, like GTA Roleplay servers, or a police simulator experience called LSPDFR. These things are the only reason I've played this game for as long as I did.

Though even modding GTA 5 is problematic as its core. You can use tools like Open IV, which work fine, but are limited in what they can achieve. So most people use programs/frameworks like RAGE Plugin Hook, Script Hook V and Script Hook V .NET to accomplish more complex and ambitioned mod projects. But as their names suggest, these are just hooks which are getting injected into the game on run-time, which means that their plugins are not part of your regular save file, and it also makes things more prone to crash and/or produce bugs.

It's the best looking GTA until now, lovely detailed and has great gunplay. But still I feel I have to symbolically not recommend this game. Because there are a lot of systems in the game that just make me shake my head. I.e. a bunch of minor things that are really annoying. Like not being able to disable auto-centering when driving a car in third person. Or not being able to walk normally when using first person. Also that characters keep swapping their outfits or loosing weapons when it's not necessary.

Then there's the lack of RPG elements (San Andreas) and progression outside of story missions. The game and gameplay is so unbelievably story-focused. There's nothing meaningful to do that is tied to progression outside of them. The money you make in side activities is trivial as hell. So they're on a "pointless mingame" level that is fun once, but doesn't motivate you. This game is really surprisingly linear for an open world game. Purchasable buildings beside the air port and tuning garage are mostly boring buildings in the world you can't really interact with or enter.

A more serious gripe is the messed up vehicle storage system. The only way to save your stolen or for a lot of money bought cars is to put them into garages. So you take your car out for a mission and it forces you to leave it behind, it's gone. If you accidentally get it blown up, it's gone. Compound works inconsitently and your cars can even vanish from your garage. There's really no point in buying and tuning cars other than for taking them for a short and careful ride. Pointless.

Also this game really is dumbed down in comparision to GTA 4. Pedestrian dying in one hit, the police not even really trying to stop you by ramming (just stupidly follow you for the most part), etc. etc.

It's still a good game and I'm actually recommending it if said things don't bother you a lot. But this sort of bullsh-ite in a huge AAA title? Why..

Not without its technical issues and kind of dated by now, but still: It's a great RPG overall package with an extremely high replayability value, interesting and diverse factions/characters/locations/quests, an immersive hardcore mode (need to eat, drink, sleep, visit doctor or use a doctor' s bag when a limb is crippled instead of simply using a Stimpak) and a lot of different weapons and armors to choose from.

In contrast to Fallout 4 (Exploration FPS), the original RPG franchise ended with this installment.

Play Half-Life 2 cooperative with friends. All the original content is there + new one like cars with multiple seats and new weapons. Works like a charme. What else would you want? :)

>> Everything wrong with Fallout 4 as a Fallout game
----------

Because who the hell likes to work for things? (Character progression)

I really like the challenge and immersion behind becoming the General of the Minutemen, getting some of the most dangerous equipment avaible in the Wasteland (Power Armor, Minigun, Fatman) as well as killing a Deathclaw and joining the almighty and sealed Brotherhood of Steel in the very first hour of the whole game. (not)

Apparently the new targeted mass audience is too overexerted with free choice and complex dialogue options

NPC: Will you help me?

Character:

Yes
No (Still forced to do it)
Sarcastic (Yes)
Huh? (Explanation that leads back to the above options)

Speech check = Yes, but for 50 caps

The FPS purpose-built overworld and quests

No longer is the wasteland a coherent and authentic post-apocalyptic world. In between the separated main settlements like Diamond city there's nothing more than FPS purpose-built locations, enemies and quests. There are many settlements that don't seem to be able to take care of themselves in the slightest. There are random hordes of raiders and super mutants inhabiting places that are only there so you have something to shoot at and then loot the chest located in the center. Brotherhood members have no valid patrols or outposts anymore (other than the Hub-like police station and airport base), they just spawn in random locations, attacking random locations until the moment they die. It's so freaking meaningless, only there to fullfil the purpose of making the world seemingly filled with life and action.

I really don't care for these BOS members, I don't care for this dungeon-like places to explore only to find one legendary enemy and a loot chest. The world doesn't feel like a world anymore, it's just a level to explore. Also I don't care to do randomized fetch quests for generic settlers mostly without any backstory or character, like "Go there, kill that, take this, bring back". Why in the name of god should I care other than having something to shoot with my weapons?

Everything is meaningless.

Roleplaying is 2000 and out

Who wants to be an evil character anyway? Be the good guy concerned father and General of the Minutemen, don't try to kill the invincible Essential NPC's inhabited everywhere and most certainly, don't try to make any choices that could change the world surrounding you. Also you have to see the reduced dialogue options mentioned above in correlation to the possible solutions/outcomes of a quest. For that, just check out the very first quest in New Vegas and how you could solve it with the following actions:

- Quest starts with Joe Cobb (a bandit) intimidating a townsfolk for handing them over a person which they hide and that the bandits will attack the place

- Help the townsfolk:
- - Optional: Kill Joe Cobb the very first moment you see him arguing, so the Bandits will have one member less when attacking
- - Optional: Recruit several people living in the town to help you out with their presence and supplies when the bandits attack
- - - For convinving them you'll need various skills like Barter, Medicine or Speech i.e.
- - Prepare for the attack and then defend the city
- - Every of your allies who dies will stay dead
- - Don't let the bandits win, or the quest will fail
- Finally you've done it and became friends with the townsfolk and claim your reward, unfortunetly the powder ganger bandits will now shoot you on sight

Help the bandits (powder gangers):
- First, kill the person hiding in the town for the bandits
- Then you need to get some supplies for the bandits from the townsfolk
- - Optional: Convince the shopkeeper to supply the bandits with leather armor using the Barter skill
- - Optional: Obtain medical supplies from the doctor:
- - - Lie to him, buy the supplies, steal them or simply kill the doctor and take everything you want
- Proceed to occupy the town with the powder gangers and kill all residents
- Don't let Joe die, since he's the one who promised you a reward
- Finally the town will be taken over by the bandits and you claim your reward. The townsfolk stays dead and you're free to join the powder gangers by traveling to their main base

Or you could kill the townsfolk on your own in between or go the psychotic way and just kill both. Also at this point you could still betray either the town or powder gangers. Regarding the bandits for example you could just spy their main base and hand the information over to the NCR military, then you could join to exterminate these criminals.

There are even more complex solutions like defending the town but still joining the Powder gangers etc.

Ergo: Compare the possible decisions and consequences of the first quest of New Vegas to the first Quest of F4. There's not a single decision to be made in the latter.

Dumbed down and streamlined for the target audience masses

  • Karma system gone
  • Faction reputation gone
  • Traits & Skills gone (RP)
  • Special/Perk trade gone. If you wanted to improve your Special stats, you had to pass on a Perk or find a rare Bobblehead. Now you can just max out everything eventually (It's really just a level & loot shooter as of now)
  • Freedom of choice gone (dialogue wheel, invincible Essential NPC's, concerned family father predefined character, no choice to be evil, simplified quest decisions)
  • Weapon condition & Hardcore mode gone without any alternative
  • Consequences gone (Not even the choices that are still there do really matter. You've literally no influence to the environment anymore other than siding with a faction, which doesn't have many consequences either)
  • In addition to above, companions really are just a invincible meat shield by now
  • Interesting locations and characters gone, everything is purpose-built for a little FPS action or for some linear main quest and the world is filled with generic characters (although there are exceptions)
__________

Let me clarify a few things last: This is NOT a hater review. I love the Fallout franchise with at least having 300 hours into F3 and FNV. Also I'm not trying to trashtalk this game per se, since I really love the new Power Armor, shooter mechanics, modifications system, Workshop and I'm actually enjoying the game for what it is. Also I don't mind the graphics, stability or bugs, it's questionable but fine imo. And the main story isn't any worse than previous games.

But what I most certainly do dislike is how they are draining the essence of the original games out of this installment. Also advertising it as a RPG and Fallout succesor while it is really just an Exploration shooter with some sanbox elements is not okay in my eyes. It's the exact opposite of what every fallout fan was expecting, namely a very weak RPG and survival theme. And the worst thing about this: It works out for them. With the new casual target audience they'll probably make a lot of money with F4 while dissapointing most old and hardcore fans.

TL;DR[http//Conclusion] = If you're not familiar with or didn't like the older Fallout titles, by all means buy this game. It's not bad and I would've liked to rate it as mixed. But this isn't Fallout, therefore stay away from this as a Fallout fan.

Further clarification

Why I liked the package of Special/Skill points and traits/perks more than the simplified F4 system: I liked the old system way more because it just felt more natural and realistic that way. Choosing you characters Special foundation, then building onto that with Traits and skill points as well as having different perks avaible every level because of the given build made my character feel dedicated. He wasn't an almighty allrounder being able to do everything he wants but there was a much clearer character progression in my eyes.

Haven't played very much until now but it's surely enough to say that this game is on par with Half-Life regarding the atmospheric strength. I'm playing it with the Ranger mode (no HUD) and it's just super intense to estimate how much ammunition is left in the clip, when to heal oneself or change the gas mask filter from the indications the game gives. Just like the breath becoming heavy or the partly transparent clip of some weapons. I really like the look of the screen when wearing the gas mask because of lovely details like the glass being shattered in the corners, flies crawling over the screen when looking at dead bodies or the mask getting dirty from water, blood etc. and you being able to wipe over it if you see bad.

So again: Regarding the gameplay it's just like Half-Life. Rather linear level structures but with an intense atmosphere, scripted events that make the world feel very lively (not cutscenes) and the ability to purchase weapons, weapon upgrades and miscellaneous like "medkits" and gas mask filters in every metro station - therefore settlement. Also the weapon handling feels good and the guns somewhat powerful, not as boring as in some generic FPS installations.

Definitely recommended and I'm not even very far in the game.

It has gotten to it the same feel which Minecraft had when it was brand new and you've been discovering this different and diverse world. Except that it's less about placing blocks but more about exploring beautiful underwater areas, varying from near-surface corale riffs up to really weird and creepy deapsea biomes inhabited by countless creatures - passive and aggresive ones. And gathering ressources while doing so. If you do play this game for the first time and haven't been spoilered: Have fun exploring the world of Subnautica, it's definitely something different and fresh to play these days. :)

Note: Satiric rant ahead. It's just that I really miss the days in the old GMod. ;P

Summing up what I wrote elsewhere: I can't recommend this game anymore. Don't get me wrong, it's still a great sandbox game for creative people (mostly singleplayer), but the real quality of this game was its community. I've bought the Steam version in January 2008 and played 9.0.4 before that, and it was a heaven. There were so many high quality addons, gamemodes (Zombie Survival, Infected Wars, Noxious Teamplay, FortWars and GMod Tower - to name a few Extra: Flood, Stranded, Pirate Wars and even a "Zombie Apocalypse MMORPG" type of gamemode with multiple connected servers whose name I can't remember anymore) and other content avaible that I could play this game forever. Joining some servers felt almost like loading a small standalone game rather than loading a simple gamemode. And both garrysmod.org (which was very active and updated regularly with great community content) and the Toybox (google it if you don't know it) were way better solutions than the Steam Workshop. It's a great thing for most games, but for GMod it was simply a downgrade.

GMod today is just a collection of mindless minigames (TTT, Prophunt, Deathrun or Jailbreak) and an utter dull yolo community consisting of "PewDiePie and/or other Let's Player fans" and the "Generation of the passing fad of Memes". No more people who actually care to spend hours upon hours to programm great things for the game, build cool bases or constructions in Sandbox or highly complex and large spaceships in Spacebuild. No more dedicated people who keep playing more complex gamemodes and help running the servers or actually roleplay and do something coordinated/hilariuos in DarkRP.

I know: Harsh words and a little bit of exaggerating. But it's nowhere near like it used to be. In the end the mainstream probably slowly replaced the creative/dedicated community and destroyed the old game culture, just like the mainstream slowly replaced any oldfag on 4chan and destroyed it's old board culture. Both are shadows of their former "glory" now. Conclusion: A) Fear the mainstream. B) GMod is still a great singleplayer sandbox game (or multiplayer if with friends) + a nice collection of fun minigames.
